What is going on with Alexander Albon?

Спорт

It appears that time is running out for Alexander Albon at Red Bull. The Thai driver has so far struggled in his stint at Red Bull, although past successes make this lack of form hard to fathom. So, what on earth is going on with this guy and can he salvage the situation before Red Bull finally run out of patience?

Well said, Getting a seat at Red bull is like getting a seat at Ferrari (before 2020) or Mercedes where you know your going to be compared to one of the best in the sport not just because of the car but because of the personality, Max gets into alot of accidents because he has the balls to try and push through that gap because it might get him into a good position where as some drivers will take the safer approach because it might mean that they finish. Albon has the drive, and the money, and the skill to race at F1 but Red bull wants another Verstappen which is fucking hard to find.

@@trueinnovator7207 Max is not a veteran, hes like you said, one in a million talents and certainly a future world champion, but what RB wants is to Albon to finish somewhere close to the podium consistently at least because right now Max is carrying single handedly the team to 2nd place in the constructors, and when his car fails, they expect the 2nd driver to be there and go for the podium. Maybe what happened to Gasly and Albon are because they don't have a lot of experience, but what is also sure is that car is not something easy to drive, so signing Hulk or Perez might be the strongest option because it wont replicate, but it'll close the gap to the likes of what Ricciardo could achieve in that car. They most probably won't challenge Max like Ricciardo did, but they'll be around if something happens to their number 1.

some extra points for you guys: - 2012 when redbull dropped alex was also the year his mum went to prison. it's understandable that his results were the way they were. - in gp3, he was second vs charles leclerc and actually had more wins than charles..charles did win the championship tho due to more podiums and just better consistency. - in f2 in 2018, he pushed george russell until the final race of the final round, was the only driver still mathematically able to win the championship. - also, he would have beat lando to second easily if the f2 cars didn't have terrible clutches (look it up. its quite crazy, every round drivers were stalling on the grid, and lots of drivers complained..there's even a video of charlie whiting almost getting yeeted by some debris from someone rear ending a stalled car on the grid at that year's finale). - alex's race pace last year was actually really good, while pierre struggled to get within half a second of max's lap times, alex was consistently close to max's lap times. - although alex did finish roughly a minute down on max on average last year (which at a glance disagrees with my above point), the biggest difference between them was alex was constantly fighting with other cars (granted self inflicted due to poor qualifying), and that obviously is not as fast as just driving, but it also takes life away from the tires. - his racecraft is significantly better than pierres (not to shit on pierre cos i think he's a nice guy and a fast driver). there's the obvious ones to look at like his move around the outside of copse on kimi raikkonen, or his move on daniel ricciardo at mugello but he's had some really technically amazing overtakes too. the switchback t1, around the outside t3 move on perez at mugello was fricken amazing, or his move at spa on daniel ricciardo. And, if you wanna talk about those overtakes being against slower cars, i guess that's fair, but for that, he did overtake sebastian vettel to initially go into the podium places at interlagos last year. - the "they race me so hard" comment isn't actually that bad. like it's pretty bad, but not as bad as you all think. Alex was talking about the fact that both alpha tauris were racing so hard to the point of potentially ruining their own tyres and own races, just to get one over him because he's in the seat they want. it's pretty obvious that engineers often instruct their drivers not to fight with faster cars because it ruins tyres and their race is ruined but it was so obvious to the point where kvyat fricken locked up and cut the chicane.

Alex Albon is stuck in a rut. However, he can rebound. He needs to regain confidence again, and maybe relax a little and don't over think things. Red Bull need to get their act together and figure out how to run their driver programs. Gasly was promoted too soon, and so was Albon. Both should've spent 2 years at Toro Rosso/AlphaTauri before even being considered for the Red Bull seat.

Yeah I agree, but it’s hard to regain confidence when driving alongside Verstappen. I’m not a huge fans of Verstappen but man he destroys teammates. And I think that red bull is hoping to find a new Verstappen in terms of driving to expectation right away (even tho Verstappen clearly had some difficulties along the way) but I guess that it just isn’t reasonable to expect a drive to match verstappen right away (or at least close to).

I'd hate to be a young driver at Red Bull. Unless you deliver good results fast they toss you away like yesterday's paper. Considering how many Red Bull academy drivers proved really good in other racing series it's fair to say the pressure at the Red Bull F1 team is immense. Look at how well Sebastian Buemi and Jean-Eric Vergne are doing in Formula E (3 titles between them). Buemi also won Le Mans 3 times and 2 WEC titles. Gasly got a podium for Toro Rosso when he was pushed out of Red Bull last season and won with the renamed Alpha Tauri at Monza this year. Then there's Carlos Sainz.

The problem with Red Bull for the past two years is that they have a Daniel Ricciardo-shaped hole in their driver lineup and nobody was ready to replace him. Both Gasly and Albon were too inexperienced to be promoted to the top team; it's the same mistake RBR made with Kvyat when Vettel left. These guys have talent in spades but they all needed the time to mature in a smaller team, and throwing them to the lions too soon has destroyed their confidence. Just look at what Gasly is doing this year; if he had been kept at Toro Rosso/Alpha Tauri the whole time then he would have been more than ready to join Red Bull next year and I'm sure he would've done very well. But now that ship has sailed and Red Bull don't know what to do with him. What Red Bull should have done two years ago was hire an experienced outside driver, like Nico Hulkenberg or Sergio Perez, and have them keep warm the seat that Ricciardo left until one of Red Bull's own junior drivers was ready to take over. By stubbornly sticking to their own junior program they have successfully burnt out all the talents they had lined up and are now running out of options. I think at this moment Hulkenberg is still the best option they have; he's fast enough, he's experienced, he has plenty of technical knowledge and he won't mind being second to Verstappen if it means he gets a chance to finally get that podium.

I feel like for the past 2 years the Red Bull car just hasn't been as good as people think it is. For me it's more Max overperforming his car instead of Gasly/Albon massively underperforming. Yes they may have not performed as well as they could have but especially this season I feel like the RB isn't that much faster than the top of the midfield. Just slightly. But Max performing extremely well just puts massive amounts of pressure on Albon to do things with this car no one except Max can archieve. This has a lot to do with the favouritism and how the car suits Max but it ultimately boils down to Max being the fastest driver when it comes to pure pace on the grid right now. Note: I don't claim this statement to be true, that's just a possibility i have thought about. I'm also not a Max fanboy. I have huge respect for what he's doing but I wouldn't call myself a fan.

Similar to how Alonso made Vandoorne look bad. When McLaren had Button and Alonso, they had a balance between Button who can excel in a car he likes, and Alonso who'll drive amazingly in anything whilst bitching about it. Engineers need feedback to develop a car and I'm not certain that Alonso could develop a car for himself and a team mate while he just drives around his car's flaws. The narrow window of stability in this year's Red Bull were identified in pre-season testing, and maybe Max can tame a fiery stallion but part of his job is to help the team succeed as a constructor, which includes developing a car that a less experienced no. 2 driver can exploit. Vandoorne was a feeder series star, worthy of a Josh Revell feature: 2010 F4 Eurocup: Champion (rookie season, first season in cars) 2011 FRenault 2.0 Eurocup: 5th overall 2012 FRenault 2.0 Eurocup: Champion 2013 FRenault 3.5: 2nd overall 2014 GP2: Won 1st race of the season and 3 others, plus pole at the last 4 rounds... 2nd overall 2015 GP2: Champion 2016 Super Formula: 4th overall (highest Honda-powered driver) Also as McLaren reserve, took Alonso's seat at Bahrain, outqualified Button and finished 10th. And now... 2018-2019 Formula E: 1 pole, 1 podium for a low-mid pack HWA team. 2019-2020 Formula E: First year of Mercedes works team, podium at rd1 and rd 2, points at 4 of the next 8 races (championship leaders go first in qualifying and get punished by track evolution), wins the last round, finishes 2nd overall. Both Gasly and Albon are worthy of driving for good F1 teams, but Red Bull... Well.

I've felt similarly as well but I don't think that Albon is a bad driver. I actually think he's quite good. I'm not sure anyone would truly envy the task of going up against Max. That said, I could definitely lend some truth to the idea that Albon's car is being used far more for development. RB doesn't even need Alex to collect points. They're still going to stomp their way to 2nd without much trouble, it seems.

  • @Revvenge
    @Revvenge3 жыл бұрын

First of all, I'd like to address your assessment of Albon's 2019 season. I believe that Albon did reasonably well early on given his vastly more experienced teammate and limited preparation. They were pretty evenly matched. In Germany, the main race where Kvyat had a much better result than Albon, it was actually Albon who drove the much better race. Kvyat lucked into his podium precisely because he was off the pace. They decided to put him on an alternate strategy and gambled with the tyres which turned out to work perfectly, while Albon stuck with a strategy not unlike his main competitors in that race. Albon had been holding station around P6 for most that race. Combined with Kvyat already having failed at Red Bull before and his hiring seamingly being rather reluctantly, as the Red Bull program was already running out of drivers since Sainz left, Albon was the logical choice as a last ditch attempt to see if they had any driver in house who could be wingman to Verstappen. That said, the Red Bull driver development program is clearly in a slump. There were times where they couldn't over a seat to some of their talent, while now they struggle to fill 3 of their 4 seats. Part of the issue is Verstappen. Verstappen is incredibly young and talented, meaning you're not gonna replace him, and driving next to him is quite a challenge to your career prospects. Eyeing up Hamilton's seat is much more interesting (although we've seen quite a few talented fall to the wayside on that goal as well). The current batch of Red Bull juniors in F1 have shown they can't help Verstappen, which is what Red Bull needs. Maybe someone in their pipeline will be able to fill that role in a couple of years, but I think right now Albon, Gasly and Kvyat either aren't fast enough, or can't deal with the pressure. AlphaTauri has also been changed from a junior team to a sister team this year, which to me shows Red Bull isn't expecting it to be a source of new teammates for Verstappen any time soon. The question really is whether Red Bull are willing to pay millions to a fast veteran driver when their junior drivers fill their seats for practically free. Hiring Hulkenberg is a bit expensive. In fact, I believe he's out of a job this year partly because he was asking for too much money at Haas. Perez has always been an interesting pay driver, as he's really fast. However, I can't help but feel he's lost some of his speed in recent years, especially this year. I think in the end the point is a bit moot though. Verstappen will only really need a good teammate when Red Bull have a package that can seriously challenge Mercedes over a whole season, which they have yet to produce. Only then you need a teammate who can steal points from competitors, or mess with their pitstop strategy. When they reach that point, they should just hire the best second driver they can find, regardless of whether or not they're in their junior program. Let's not forget that only Gasly had been with the Red Bull junior program for any significant amount of time leading up to his current stint in F1 out of all drivers currently employed by Red Bull.

The moment I lost it with Albon was when he said “They race me so hard.” He’s racing at the top level in Motorsport and, more specifically, against the man he replaced. Red Bull needs to stop looking for young drivers and start investing on older more experienced ones who can drive the car and fight Max. Albon just isn’t good/experienced enough to be in Red Bull. Whether it’s the car or him or both, it doesn’t really change much. Taking a young driver and throwing them against Max in an already somewhat hard car to drive is going to end the same every time- Max P3, and whoever else P5 or lower. RB needs to invest in someone who has relatively extensive F1 experience, let new drivers pick up skills in Toro Rosso, and draft from Toro Rosso or elsewhere with the common denominator being F1 experience. New drivers are just proving they literally can’t compete in that car

@@TunaStrata, Hi, greetings from Brazil. Sette: it is similar to the number 7 -- SETE -- but in Italian -- SETTE -- and very similiar to Spanish -- SIETE. Câmara: emphasis on "Câ", Josh said "Camará" something like "kataná", "Canadá", which is really misleading, I almost didn't understand what he said. Câmara has many meanings, it can a room inside a house, the space where air goes inside a ball or a bicycle tire and the house of representatives, congress and senate are both "Câmaras". Câmera: on the other hand is the machine to take pictures, photos; or to record a TV show. So ... Sérgio seven rooms in the house or Sergio house with seven rooms would be very interesting translations.

I've been thinking about doing my uni dissertation on what i'm currently calling the 'Red Bull Racing Problem' where they promote junior drivers before they are ready and expect them to performce as well as Max in a team that only cares about Max. Pressure is important for performance as it gives motivation but too much pressure, too quickly and people bottle it, it's just how humans work.

No, they do not expect them to perform 'as well as Max'. If you had more experience of the Red Bull programme, it has been like this since the start. One of Marko's stated aims was to weed out those who are not strong enough; this is why Liuzzi, Doornbos & Klien were all dropped. Marko openly said they were not looking for good drivers, they were not looking for capable drivers, they were looking for World Champions - they found Vettel, and that was that, everyone else had to match that, they found one: Ricciardo. They have never traditionally been about developing talent, or skills; they give physical training, fitness and endurance; they give media training and schedule planning, and a bit of financial advice too (makes sense, given the rate of churn over the years!) but they were not out to give people time, but to pressure them to see if they crack. It's why Carlos Sainz is in F1, and Antonio Felix Da Costa isn't-they put them head to head with objectives; both achieved the objectives, but Sainz did so unexpectedly, so Da Costa was bypassed - it's ruthless, and brutal - but what else prepares you for being an F1 champion? Perhaps the programme should change, perhaps that method doesn't get the best out of everyone; in fact - no doubt it doesn't! But it's methods have not been those of a 'driver training' programme, ever; more like the SAS or SEAL training. Ruthless, relentless, unforgiving; only the strong survive. What's telling is that for the F1 team (and seems to have got missed by most) - Horner and Marko said that the programme was almost over early in 2020; they were no longer using it, solely, to find F1 drivers, but to ensure the success of the team they were going to look outside if needed - that acknowledges they do not feel any of the current juniors are good enough for RBR, and so they have freed themselves from the pressure of choosing 'the best RB driver' - and we have now seen evidence that they meant it, in Perez. Whather that will lead the RB programme into becoming a driver development programme - with an emphasis on maximising and personalising tuition to each young driver will be fascinating to see, given the hirings of Perez and Tsunoda from outside, or whether the programme will shrink, or be stopped altogether, now that there are big budget holes at both F1 teams post-Honda/Aston Martin leaving and they have started looking outside.

In the 2019 Belgian Grandprix, he had one of the fastest lap times but received a time penalty due to an engine issue for which he had to start from the back of the grid but still managed to climb to 5th in his maiden race for red bull. @Daniel Djurov you need to get down to the crystal ball shop and buy another one. Looks like Albon is last and out of F1.

When was Albon a mule? He was never in a position to be one for max due to his tendency to only have a good race in the final third of the race

At Spain they put hards on him when everyone knew the tyre was rubbish that weekend. In Belgium they put mediums on him when everyone went on hards.

Whenever RB isn’t sure about a strategy, they test it out on Albon to see if it works or not

They might do that, and why not? The only time they can do that is when Albon already ruined his own race by flat spotting or damaging his car. Under normal circumstances he makes Q3 and starts on soft tires
