Yes I have the Wouxun Kg958-g. I will mainly use it, like you for trail communication. Looking to properly set up repeaters and to do want to monitor local activity. Thanks Thanks.

It’s on my list for the next batch of videos I’m working on. Right now, this is gonna be a weekly series I’m rolling out on Monday’s. Next one up is how to get yoyr license, followed by a couple more on selecting first radios and etiquette, will be diving into the repeaters here very soon with some details on how to setup your radio, and resources for finding repeaters near you.

Unfortunately my "in-laws" are too far for simplex. 😉 Really like the light bulb analogy.

My lady friend is deaf. Is there a way she can communicate using GMRS, like text messaging?

Hey John, there are some options that are coming more and more to the forefront. The FCC did recently allow for short data messaging through simplex transmissions and some models are starting to come to market with that ability. First one I can think of is the GMRS Pro from B-Tech. It features a bluetooth app that will allow for messaging between handsets, not sure if it'll work with other radios as they're developed and I have yet to put my hands on one, but its on the list for radios I'm going to try to test out in the near future, especially for that functionality.

It depends, some are, some aren’t. I think my former ones were about 80/20 a-holes to good people.

I still don't get why any radio requires a test like you're applying for the the cia or something. If something bad happened and all phones went out only people with hams would be able to communicate over longer distances...😕but I digress. At any rate the GMRS seems like the best option for me I considered CB but I hear people tell me lots of people curse on there. I've just wanted an option to keep in touch with my family and friends within 2 to 5 miles if possible. I live in a part of NYC with alot of trees, houses and cars and hills so whatever you'd recommend short of ham and relatively easy to get as in paying for a license and I'm good to go, best radios that are affordable im all ears. Nice video.👍🏼

Amateur Radio is the only radio service in the US that grants us access to a LOT of spectrum, and a lot of Power. Imagine how ham radio would be if no one bothered to learn how to operate any radio at 1500watts of power.

*@RKingis* Honestly unless you're someone who worries about modding HAMS, programming it every which way it's not a big deal how to operate. At the end of the day it's really just a walkie talkie, you change the channels, set private channels if you wish, alter the volume and push the button to communicate. Guess what I'm saying is it's a two way radio/walkie talkie not an AK 47, shouldn't require all this redtape, tests with the FCC watching you etc for a communication device. What if there's a serious crisis and all cell phones go down, only HAM licensed people can communicate, what about the rest of the world who couldn't get one because of these ridiculous tests, hoops to jump through? Just some food for thought.

@@MKF30 by forcing people to take a test. It keeps a lot of undesirable people off the airwaves you can harm things with a ham radio a lot of interference you can spill over into bands that don’t allow civilians. There’s a whole Lotta reasons why it’s not very hard to take the test do a little bit of studying, and you have one by the way if there’s no other forms of communication and there’s an emergency somebody without a license is allowed to talk on the radio. but all other forms of communication must not be available on that note just study for the test you’ll see why there’s a lot of information that you need to know there’s rules and if you just let any old buddy pick one up and start playing the airwaves would be a mess

@@philcarlson5313A test is ridiculous for a mere 2 way radio, if it was easier to attain it like the rest juat available via purchase more people would be into the hobby. The chance of that are very low and besides that's what CB radio ia for. My uncle has a ham and told me there's very low chance to none of anyone messing around. Theyve also made GMRS ones cheaper to get so I don't see the big deal lowering thr requirements. There's far more important things that need to be addressed that a radio without a license honestly. Theres also private channels which easily avoid anyone interfering.

@philcarlson5313 By forcing people to do so also restricts more people getting involved in the hobby. I highly doubt people think "let me get a ham to mess around" my uncle has one he's told me he's never had an issue with people taking it less seriously, they got it out of curiousity. Also, technically there's really no way to monitor who has and who hasn't got a license. As someone who's uncle is into the hobby and knows others longer than myself, I've yet to hear one story of anyone messing around with Emergency channels. As for regular users That's why there's private channels like on pretty much every radio even FRS, but all of that aside I think the country has more pressing matters these days than worrying about people using two way radios without a license...The reason why this makes no sense to me is we need licenses to drive, right yet how many people out there drive wrecklessly? Dangerously? Drink and Drive? I'm pretty sure those people had to get a license too yet aren't less dangerous to others on the road, that is far worse than someone owning a radio without a lame license to literally communicate....

Get your ham radio license! It's not hard and much more useful!
