What is Falernum? History and Taste Off

Ойын-сауық

We finally sat down and made a video about one of the earliest tropical cocktail ingredients: falernum. In this episode, we look at the murky history of this rum-based liqueur. From its beginning on the island of Barbados to the dominance of John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum during the 1930’s tiki craze, and through to the tropical cocktail resurgence of today. We also look at a few of the prominent newcomers to the falernum market that might deserve a spot behind your bar: Lucky Falernum, California Falernum, and Bitter Truth’s Golden Falernum.
After tasting all of these falernums, we put them head to head in a double cocktail showdown. The results were quite interesting!

Wish Falernum was available in the barrens of Connecticut, sigh. Off topic but useful tidbit: whenever y'all need to do a colonoscopy prep, your Fiery Ginger syrup actually makes the Suprep tolerable to drink, a task that many thought was nigh impossible. Tell your 45 and older friends! 🙂

I am so interested in the California and Lucky Falernum! I can imagine the strengths described from these Falernum products doing really well in a number of amazing cocktails! Complex and amazing flavour profiles!! I can't wait to try and find these Falernum variations and I'd totally be in to a trip to Washington State and California to get these products!! Exciting!! Cheers!! 🙂

They really are so unique and fun to use! You can make a lot of delicious cocktails with them, especially if you're into tropical flavors. We hope they get wider distribution and are easier to find. Cheers, Christine!

Hello Liber & Co. Very interesting video. Personally, I make my homemade falernum because I find the liqueurs often too sweet. The list of different ingredients used gave me ideas for my next achievements. Otherwise in France we can have The Bitter Truth, Velvet and others from independent bottlers but I admit I have never bought any. Well done 🍸

Hi Phil, thank you so much for the kind words. Agree that some of the falernum liqueurs are quite sweet. Very cool you have your own homemade version!

So if one purchased Velvet Falernum, would it help the cocktails if you added the Liber fiery ginger syrup?

That would definitely boost the flavor, good thinking! Your comment inspired Adam to test another hack, making your own falernum with 2 oz white rum, 2 oz water, ½ oz Almond Orgeat Syrup, ¼ oz Fiery Ginger Syrup, ¼ oz fresh lime juice, 6-8 dashes Angostura bitters. It was quite good!!

Would yall make a Falernum syrup or your own Falernum liqueur? I’ve seen Fee Brothers have made their own syrup.

What is the main diffrence between the bombay dry gin and the East bombay dry gin?

the original has softer juniper, spice, and a more floral taste. The nose of Sapphire East is full of lemon, juniper, and black pepper with some floral undertones~
