What is ESO?

Ғылым және технология

We are ESO, the European Southern Observatory. For decades we have been designing, building and operating the most advanced ground-based telescopes in the world. Discover our mission, our observing sites and telescopes, our breakthroughs and our people.

I was an ESO user in the late 1990s. I observed asteroids with ESO's 1.5-m telescope at La Silla. ESO really is a fantastic place to work.I agree that ESO's scientific and technical advances over the last 60 years have changed the way we look at the universe, but who is the target audience for this video? Amateurs and professional astronomers or the general public? There are a lot of technical terms like "deformed mirrors" or the high accuracy of the ELT alignment system that I understand and appreciate as a professional astronomer, but are they important to the general public? I think that ESO's public appearance on KZread could be reconsidered. ESO's videos are technically of a high standard in terms of quality of images, animations and sound, but they are not as exciting as many videos from small science channels on KZread. I am not a hater. I really appreciate the work of ESO, but this thought always comes back to me when I see a video from the ESO channel.

Hari gini masih bikin teropong bintang di permukaan bumi??? Amerika sudah bikin teropong bintang di luar angkasa: Hubble & James Webb.

Building telescopes on Earth enables the use of much larger mirrors at a much lower cost. For comparison, while the primary mirrors of the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes are 2.4m and 6.5m in diameter, the mirror of the ELT will be 39 metres large. Through a larger mirror it is possible to observe fainter objects and achieve better resolution - namely, the ability to distinguish fine details. Using a technique called adaptive optics we can correct atmospheric turbulence, delivering very sharp images. Also, fixing space telescopes or upgrading them with new instruments is either very costly (like Hubble) or simply not possible (like JWST, which is located way beyond the Moon). So space telescopes and ground-based ones complement each other, the former can’t replace the latter.
