What is Dystonia - Causes, Symptoms & Treatment (Explained)
Dystonia is a movement disorder caused by a neurological condition. Dystonia patients have involuntary muscular spasms and contractions.
Movements are frequently repetitious, resulting in strange, uncomfortable, and occasionally painful positions. In addition, tremor (shaking) is commonly related to some kinds of dystonia.
Dystonia can arise independently or due to another disorder, some of which may be inherited. Some types of dystonia are inherited. Typically, the disease is not related to difficulties in thinking or understanding. Dystonia is not lethal. However, issues associated with dystonia-related illnesses can be fatal.
Symptoms
The first symptoms may be relatively modest, appearing only after prolonged activity, stress, or weariness. The symptoms may grow more visible or widespread with time; nevertheless, there is sometimes little or no progression. Symptoms could include:
1. A foot cramp or a tendency for one foot to turn or drag-occasionally occurring, in unpredictable patterns, or after jogging or walking a distance.
2. Handwriting deterioration after writing numerous lines
3. An involuntary neck twisting, especially when weary or stressed.
4. Both eyes blink rapidly and uncontrollably; spasms sometimes cause the eyes to shut.
5. Tremor
6. Having difficulty speaking
Dystonia frequently evolves through phases. At first, the motions may be intermittent, appearing only during intentional movements or under stress. Later, dystonic postures and activities can be visible when walking and, eventually, while the person is calm. Dystonia is associated with rigid postures and tendon shortening.
Dystonia can strike at any age. However, some kinds are commonly classified as early (childhood) or adult-onset.
Early-onset dystonia frequently begins with symptoms in the arms and legs and can proceed to other body parts. Some symptoms appear after periods of activity and/or fluctuate throughout the day.
Adult-onset dystonia generally affects one or more body regions, most commonly the neck and/or face muscles. However, some dystonias can spread to other parts of the body.
