If her mind was blown that carrots weren't orange from the beginning, you might add tomatoes were yellow at first ;) that's why the Italians still call them pomodori, or golden apples.

This is truly fucking amazing! I came into this video thinking the answer had to do with the color orange in a way that sport cities/regions have team colors associated with them. I had no idea an actual King Orange existed and was influencing the color scheme. And in california, I can still get all those other colored carrots at farmers markets, but to think that every orange carrot I've ever eaten came from Dutch meddling = mind blown!!

I don't know his name, but he told in one of the videos that he had the strong feeling all his life that he belonged in the Netherlands. So, when he finished school, he emigrated from the USA to the Netherlands and he loves it.

Orange colour?

You can buy so-called 'forgotten' vegetables at supermarkets and green grocers, mainly carrots, like Pastinaak (parsnip), Schorseneer (salsify) and Mierikswortel (horseradish). Taste is different, but you can essentially prepare the first two as you would the orange carrots. Mierikswortel is a little different. And easily my favourite! The Danes call this vegetables 'pepperroot'. I'll let you figure out why, if you want

They are definitively less common, often sold on farmers markets as 'forgotten vegetables', in the supermarkets you won't see them very often. Perhaps during Christmas, when more people like to cook, and like to cook something special, but during the year, supply just isn't big enough.

"Dutch people spread their carrots everywhere they go??" Is this obligatory? What if your great-grandfather was Dutch, do you still have to do a small share of the carrot-spreading activity? Let me know. Happy to oblige if it´s required. I´d also like to know when there´s any chance of Netherlands re-opening, as I had a holiday there booked for this month (april) but live in Spain, and we are shut too.

Elisa Bird it’s unlikely that the restrictions will be lifted this month. On april 21th the Dutch government will asses if some of the restrictions can be lifted. However these are unlikely to include the restrictions on tourism. Missing out on a vacation should be the least of our concerns in a time like this though.

@@willempie4487 I agree. Here in Spain, we closed down on 13 march and are now very cautiously being let out in a few places, including El Hierro, Canary Islands, where I live. We will travel as soon as flights resume and everything is open again, but realistically that probably means the autumn. Look after yourselves, that is most important.
