as a man with 2 boys and a girlfriend who live together, i can say it is hard to make it with a "regular" salary here in sweden, 32% of the salary goes to taxes, then you pay 25% tax on everything else, exept alcohol, that is 40%.... so if you dont like taxes, do not move to sweden! you have to pay ALOT of taxes here... to be able to live as a family here in sweden you need to earn atleast 45000kr a month.

My point was that you can live pretty comfortable with two people earning about 30k a month easily, you don't need even close to 45k a month to live well in Sweden. I guess it depends on your definition of living well though... I would also say that if you have 2-3 kids then Sweden probably is one of the most inexpensive countries to live in. It is only when you have no kids it becomes more expensive.

I think the most realistic people here say around 30 000. That goes up as you grow older and work longer in your profession but if you work at like, volvo, and work on the factory floor, somewhere between 25-35 000 before taxes is normal. If you make over 40 000 before taxes you definitely are in the higher earning classes. But if you go to university and such, you will most often make over 40. I don't know if this is in Stockholm or Gothenburg or something because they usually make more, but it also costs A LOT more to live there

The taxes are also based around 30-35% up until 50 000, anything over 50 000 is around 50% I THINK. Meaning you pay 30% of those 50k, and then if you make 55k, the extra 5k is 50% tax. I am not one of these people that makes this but I think thats how it is. If you make more than 50k you may as well pay more anyways 🤷‍♂️

With 30k you can afford a large apartment (villa if you're a couple), a nice car and some traveling. 40k+? That's all luxury. A good salary is to be defined in % of what your basic expenses cost you. Starting with your Rent. If you rent represent less than 30% or you salary, you have a good salary. Only 10% of the population earns more than 50300kr/month 25% earns more than 40500 50% earns more than 33000 75% earns more than 28000 90% earns more than 24600 All of those are before taxes. The average salary in sweden is about 37500. For blue collar it is 29300 and for white collar 45100. And the median salary is 34200 which is more of an accurate way to know what the average salary for ”normal people” is. My basic salary is slightly lower than the median and that is no problem living a good life as a single person with about 9500 in rent. But I get a lot of additional money in my job so I often end up with about 30 after taxes. And I don’t think that is shown in such statistics… so a lot of people probably earns more than what the statistics show but that extra money isn’t counted in the statistics. Around 30-35 and you will live a comfortable life in general. But what to expect in salary is different depending of where u live. What’s a good salary in Stockholm will be very different from a good salary in Örebro or Gislaved. Taxes will be different depending of where you live and rents, food, petrol, electricity etc… will also be very different.

I only want to add that the median income is actually more like 28k when you look at the collective income per year and not at what salary people have. Not everyone will work 100% for various reasons. While the median salary is about 34k that is not what people actually earn in practice. 50k per month is also much less than 10%, it actually is about 3% who earn that much per month if you look at the income for a whole year.

Very interesting question. IMO, the pay gap has increased ALOT since the glory days of the social democratic welfare state. Now, the older man saying 50k or over (before tax) is a good salary that would be considered rich/wealthy here in Sweden. My mother, now retired, didn't earn that much, max around 45k maybe as a top level HR-boss in one of Swedens main state agencies. So to make big money then you basically need to be a doctor, lawyer, expert-engineer etc or work in the private sector. If you are employed in the public sector like healthcare and you're not a specialized nurse or doctor, then expect much lower salaries. Public administration or blue collar jobs are around 15-30 K usually. IF you work with the elderly or actually work to maintain Swedens famous welfare system with healthcare, childcare, care of elderly etc, which are female dominated sectors then forget about ever earning 40-50 k. That's the sad reality here which I hope changes, people doing essential work making Sweden function are paid peanuts and people employed by multinational businesses or private/financial sector make the highest salaries. And that gap is ever increasing. Also now with the inflation and energy prices, costs of living are all around quite high. Then there is the growing precariat of people mainly immigrant background who work in low-wage or informal sector with unstable work conditions. I love Sweden and the idea of Swedish welfare and equalizing force of the state/public sector but that vision is under threat to be honest. When I was growing up in the 90's-00's, most people I knew wanted to have a good, stable life but not to be rich or wealthy and valued equality and solidarity. Today, due to globalization, everybody wants to live like kings and have servants again. So there are people making 50K and upwards but don't think that that represents the average working Swede, that is a wealthy person in central Stockholm/Gotheburg usually.
