Me too. Fr Ripperger's videos basically helped me re-learn my faith. It is surprising that as a fervent convert for almost ten years and after listening many preachers and reading many catholic books, I realized I have soo much to learn from Fr. Ripperger. I don't know why all these Catholic priests and preachers who claim to be Thomists didn't give me the information that Fr. Ripperger gave me.

I’ve been looking for a thorough explanation of confession for months. My search has now been satisfied. Thank you, Fr Ripperger. My rosary today is dedicated to you and your holy work.

I have only just found this channel but will return regularly - very impressed. Pain and suffering are often cited by non-believers as a reason for not believing in God, but they are at the root of Christianity (the cross). They cannot be avoided. They are fundamental to our faith. Christians do not avoid them or run the other way. We embrace them.

I think what a lot of people need to realize is that, as much as it is important to ask forgiveness for yourself, it is also important to forgive others. I've heard some NDE testimonies of people who have been sent to Hell, not necessarily because they committed any mortal sins themselves, but merely because they were unable to forgive other people. Jesus can only forgive you as much as you forgive others. (Luke 6:37: “Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;") Once you're out of that confessional booth, forgive yourself, your neighbors and FORGET. Here's a beautiful prayer the Franciscan Friars use while contemplating the Way of the Cross: "Thou didst forgive Thy enemies; my God, teach me to forgive injuries and FORGET them."

Excellent explanation of this undervalued Sacrament but essential for our salvation and liberation. What a beautiful gift the Lord left us out of his infinite love and mercy🙏 I just wish all Priest were proficiency (honestly, not all of them are doing a good job on this) in this Sacrament and talk more about it to the faithful. This is about “eternal” death or life. Thank you Fr. Ripperger, you’re doing an excellent job.👏🏼👏🏼

I wish priests encouraged confession more often

As a non native English speaker I use subtitles, which are often strange, and today I got: "people should develop a devotion to going to confession, it is a devotion to God's mercy and his banana tea". Let's grow in holiness over a cup of tea!

I am just a little bit frightened but I am comforted by the love of Jesus who came to save sinners like me.

I've found that while traditional priests will help and prompt the number of times you did something, novus ordo priests will not and I always feel uncomfortable specifying because I get the impression that they find it unnecessary. And when I went to Catholic school in the 90s and 00s, nobody ever told us that it was supposed to be the practice to specify how many times you committed mortal sin. I had no idea it was threatening the integrity of my confession and I can't help but look back and feel guilty about that. I made tons of bad confessions! I guess I just wish that the seriousness of this was properly impressed upon young Catholics (I went to Catholic school all my life and never got this information). Hearing Fr. Ripperger speak about this only makes me realize how little we are educating people about the nature of this sacrament.

I feel the same. I am now, in my late 30's, having to go back and confess past sins as the Holy Spirit reminds me. I'm that person with a notebook. Agreed as well, though probably well intentioned, the N.O. priests I've seen will start to sound a bit exhausted with confessions (serious) but from years ago or that they may find too minor. I need to find a traditional priest and schedule him to set a few hours aside for me!

I love Fr Ripperger's serious manner of presenting the truth. His comment about the rarity of a perfect contrition is interesting. I don't know if it's a results of our present era being more pessimistic than the times when Bishop Sheen was recording his talks. Bishop Sheen remarked the opposite he thought most of the contrition expressed in the confession he heard was because the penitent was sorry for offending God and not a fear of hell. Bishop Sheen comment could also reflect the caliber of penitent he received in the confessional. Thanks for posting these.

@@nafuregal1288 How would they know for sure. God would have to speak to each one? Unlikely imho. Priest given the power by Christ, (whose sins you forgive they are forgiven Jn 20:23) saying you're forgiven - then you're sure.

@@nafuregal1288 I know, but I think some are blinded by the Deceiver. I have my own ideas tho :) - There are levels of heaven (Paul mentioned 3rd heaven), 12 gates to the New Jerusalem - I think God, who reads hearts, forgives and saves whomever He wills. Only Catholics have the edge. I always know I'm forgiven after confession because of what Jesus said, even though I may not "feel" it.

What are we lay people to do when the penance is too light? I experienced this upon returning to the church. My sins were terrible, and after a decade+ 5 "Our Father" & 5 "Hail Mary" was certainly not enough.

merely praying 5 hail marys seem not enough. something must be wrong. penance must be that which will help us grow in virtue by doing something that will create a habit to do that which glorifies God

@@nonoylopez5197 My sins were enough that a lifetime of seclusion in a monastery probably wouldn't suffice. I think he was worried that a harsh penance would make it hard for me to stay in the church. But I really don't know what to do. If I impose additional reparations, am I holding on to my sins and being defiant and obstinant?

@@Kivlor no, it doesn't mean you are holding onto your sins... it merely means that you recognize the wound that has been inflicted by the sin and that you know it will take more than any of us is able to do to make it right... there is nothing wrong with adding on more penance, just so long as you recognize that your sins have actually been forgiven... there's still payback, that's what purgatory is, but I'd rather pay now than pay later.. I get it! The priest most likely doesn't realize that HE takes on the penance and what is owed GOD ... Padre Pio said that they are responsible..

My friend in Christ After confession, absolution and penance do your best to do reparation, for example abstain from meat for 3 days a week, do act of mercy, a charitable act, adoration, and the list goes on pray for discernment for what sort of reparation and you will be inspired Viva Christo Rey

Thank God for the Mercy that He has bestowed upon you through the ministry of His Holy Catholic Church!! When you go for confession, you're not asking for God's Justice, but rather His Mercy. Be grateful, make reparation according to your conscience and ability, start anew, and do your best to sin no more.

I'm confused, I was told once you confess your sins, (as long as I don't commit them again), that you don't have to confess it again. If I go to confession 6 months later, then I should only confess the sins I've committed within the 6 months not dredge up past sins that were already forgiven. I confessed something, then about 3 confessions later, I felt to confess it again with a different priest, and I told him I've confessed this sin before and he said, this is the first time I've ever heard someone confess it again but he said, go ahead, and I told him. But when I left I vowed never to confess that sin again. I closed that chapter in my life for good. Sorry for the long comment.....Peace, Father ♡

Father what if your act of contrition doesn’t feel sincere? Doesn’t seem sorrowful enough? How does one know then that he was truly absolved? As a man I’ve never learned to tear up so I’ve always had people tell me I’m not sincere?

I agree with the Fr. in that video that we can't know how pure exactly is our intention, and that we should not go to Holy Communion with a mortal sin on our conscience before sacramental confession, of course. But my question still remains: on what basis rests Fr. Ripperger's claim that an act of perfect contrition is exceedingly rare? Granted that we can never know exactly just how pure our contrition is, my understanding is that "perfect contrition" does not mean "perfectly pure" or "perfectly selfless" contrition, but simply contrition which has for its main motive the love of God. So any one that is sincerely able to say, "Lord, I am sorry for my sins because I love you," is so capable of making an act of perfect contrition - is this not correct?

It is generally understood that it is impossible to know (on this side of heaven) if one has made a perfect act of contrition. It is rare because unless a miracle of grace occurs (which are rarer than physical miracles), one basically needs complete detachment from ALL sin to make a perfect act of contrition. Since most people do not have complete detachment from all sins, it is presumably rare for people to make a perfect act of contrition.

@@jackcollinson2358 Hello Mr. Collinson. I think one should have the love of God as the only motive for the sorrow of sins than having it as the main motive with other motives also present.

So do we call it the Sacrament of Penance or Confession?

Agree, by confessing to a priest one can be sure that sins are forgiven On the other hand, one could argue that confessing the exact same sins to different priests would mean different types of penance depending on the priest So then, if the penance varies depending on what priest you see, how does that reflect to what degree sins are really forgiven by God? Any thoughts on that? Btw, and this might be a sin, but f. Ripperger makes me proud of being Catholic. Maybe happy is a better word. 🙏

I’m a new convert (2 yrs) and I’m trying to understand something-does a person come to a point when they don’t fall into mortal sin so easily? It’s usually 2 weeks for me. Is this a process where eventually it won’t be so easy to fall in mortal sin?

Yes cos for every sin confessed you get grace to struggle against it. Our Lord loves you and wants to help you so keep asking for the grace. And I'll pray for you!

Ask God for the virtue or the grace which is opposite to the vice or sin you are falling into. Ask with humility and He will give it to you. Tell Him you want to depend on Him completely.

Sins of the past life mean sins committed before a good confession. Either forgotten sins or those mentioned in a previous confession that already have been forgiven.

​@@user-id2hd3nl3g Pope Leo X explained that you can do Reparation for those sins which have already been forgiven, that reparation is to God to make up for the offenses to Him, it also helps reduce temporal punishment and helps correct the disorders caused by the sin on the person and strengthen them so they do not commit it again. While God may have pardoned the sin you confessed, some of the remaining effects of sin may remain. Some confess a past sin of the species they are getting temptations of to be strengthened against that kind of sin. For instance, confess having stolen something in the past which was already forgiven if you're getting temptations to steal even if you haven't sinned. By doing that you get grace so avoiding the sin of stealing is easier, helps the disorders in your faculties heal and increases your state of grace.

It's pretty difficult to confess and be humble even when you know you should be when the disgusting priest starts assuming things, listening to other people's accusation without saying one word to you about it, and attacking you based on his own problems. When a priest fails this badly to separate his own ego with God whom he is supposed to represent, and ATTACKS the person making confession, Houston, we have a problem. I love your videos Fr., but one habit you have is making something of priests that you CAN'T. While I don't subscribe to the propaganda of the MSM against the church, I've experienced first hand when a priest goes bad. Worst punishment God can give you.... First time, I chalked the absurdity to what the priest said to a bad day--anybody can have one. Second time, he threw me out of the confessional without hearing an act of contrition. Well, God blessed me enough to finally realize what a disgrace that fake priest was. I don't care what oaths you've taken or who says otherwise, if you take a dump in the confessional the way that guy did, you're no priest. I no longer trust any of you, and I'll take my sins directly to God.

See for me, it was...I'm in my 50s. I haven't been a consistent Catholic all my life, but if I go to Communion, I go to Confession first. I had never been treated like that. And the first time it happened, I didn't know what was going on. I literally thought, wow, he must have had a really bad day. Harsh penance isn't unwelcome here though--I have a significant devotional life, and nothing he could give me would have bothered me--if it wasn't personal. After the 2nd attack, I skipped Confession and Communion for Christmas thinking that something was wrong. It wasn't til bout February or so, that it all came together, that the reason for the attack became obvious. I didn't even think what he did was POSSIBLE. He had been personally insulted by something I said to a friend at breakfast--that "friend" somehow either recorded the conversation or had me on open speaker. And the worst part is, it was completely innocent--the Priest was REALLY angry at his superior for making him the butt of a joke during mass--a perfectly harmless, light-hearted joke, just told during a sermon to wake people up a little. It got a little chuckle during mass. And that priest used the Confessional to take it out on ME. I had told the story thinking I was saying, see Mass isn't so bad. When this all started, if I told the whole story, I would tell you honestly, that I was upset in the beginning. I did everything I could to be invisible in that church. I left people alone, sat in the back, left a bit early. But now when I think about it....that friend recording the conversation about a priest who was attacking me behind MY back...well....it's kind of funny. I had no intent to hurt his feelings or insult him. He had every intent on getting back at me, for things people accused me of first, and finally for something he couldn't get back at his superior for.

Keir Campbell, yeah, using the Confessional as your own personal weapon is heretical. Priests are held to a higher standard, not an easier one. I walked away. Let God rebuke him.

@@keats27 pray for strength to confess, it will nourish you, most priests perform their duties without judgement I can promise you that Personally I have some differences with my own parish priest, nothing major but I had come back to the faith after a long absence and needed my first real confession again, very hard so I went to a priest of another parish to remove that personal barrier It was still very hard but it was such a relief to overcome that burden

Jesus never talked about confessing to a Priest.

Paul a priest is not necessary for confession, but he can help. We can confess directly to our Lord - I do it all of the time. BUT my most memorable confession was to a family Catholic Priest. It helped me a lot. God works many different ways - his ways are not limited. Different methods do work. Priests are not a wasting their time.

Paul I think you are being too harsh on priests. Not all priests are pedophiles or bad people. I know personally some very good ones. Bad people are found every where, not just in the priesthood. Sin is not exclusive to priests or the church.

You should do yourself a favour and actually read the New Testament because Christ was the one who instituted the sacrament of confession and gave the Apostles (the first bishops) authority to forgive and retain a person's sins. "Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” - John 20:21-23 So not only are you ignorant of scripture, but you deny the words and teaching of Christ Himself. You also deny the entire witness of the early Church that observed the practice of confession and handed the tradition down through the ages to the present day. The fact that you don't confess your sins to a priest like all true Christians have throughout history proves that you're not a Christian but a member of a heretical man-made sect. And when was the last time you received the Eucharist? Because according to Christ, if you don't receive communion then you have no life in you. "Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum." - John 6:53-5 Throughout history, all true Christians have met on Sunday (the Lord's Day) to fellowship and break bread (partake in the Eucharist). So you need to wake up and convert to the traditional Catholic faith, the one true faith of Jesus Christ outside of which there is no salvation, otherwise you're going to hear the words "depart from me you worker of lawlessness, I never knew you" and will be excluded from heaven. Christ said: "If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, regard him as you would a pagan or a tax collector." - Matthew 18:17 Better start listening and obeying tradition like the Bible says, because hellfire awaits you on the other side if you don't. Follow Tradition "Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us." - 2 Thessalonians 3:6 "So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter." - 2 Thessalonians 2:15 "I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you." - 1 Corinthians 11:2

Jesus did not say this. He was dead and the man who wrote it never met Jesus. So again written into the story decades after Jesus time.
