What is Condenser? | English | Animation | HVAC | Chiller |

Chiller condensers play a vital role in the cooling process of chiller systems. They work by removing heat from the refrigerant, which allows the chiller to cool the desired space or equipment.
The basic working principle of a chiller condenser involves the transfer of heat from the refrigerant to the surrounding environment. There are two main types of chiller condensers: air-cooled and water-cooled. Let's explore how each type works:
Air-cooled condenser:
The air-cooled condenser consists of a network of coils and a fan. The coils are usually made of copper or aluminum and are designed to maximize heat transfer.
The refrigerant, in its gaseous state, enters the condenser coil from the compressor.
As the refrigerant flows through the coil, the ambient air, drawn in by the fan, passes over the coils, absorbing the heat from the refrigerant.
The heat transfer causes the refrigerant to condense into a high-pressure, high-temperature liquid state.
The fan then expels the heated air to the surroundings, completing the heat exchange process.
The condensed refrigerant is then sent back to the chiller's evaporator to start the cooling cycle again.
Water-cooled condenser:
In a water-cooled condenser, the heat exchange process occurs with the help of water instead of air.
Water-cooled condensers consist of tubes or plates through which the refrigerant flows.
The refrigerant enters the condenser as a hot, high-pressure gas and flows through the tubes or plates.
Cooling water is circulated around the tubes or plates, absorbing the heat from the refrigerant and causing it to condense into a liquid state.
The heated water, which has absorbed the heat from the refrigerant, is then pumped to a cooling tower or another heat rejection system to dissipate the heat.
The condensed refrigerant, now in liquid form, is returned to the chiller's evaporator to repeat the cooling cycle.
Both air-cooled and water-cooled condensers serve the purpose of transferring heat from the refrigerant to the surrounding environment. The choice between the two depends on factors such as space availability, efficiency requirements, and operating conditions.
That's the simplified explanation of how chiller condensers work. They are essential components that enable chillers to remove heat and provide efficient cooling in various applications.

You are asking about the cylindrical shape chamber. That is used to separate the liquid and vapor refrigerant. The separated liquid refrigerant will go to evaporator and vapor refrigerant will go the compressor. I will make a separate video in this topic.
