What is Compton Scattering?
This video provides a detailed overview of Compton Scattering and its role in the development of quantum physics. The photon model of light is used to explain the Compton shift in wavelength of scattered x-rays by electrons. The principles of energy and momentum conservation are used to calculate the size of the wavelength shift as a function of scattering angle. The video ends with a discussion of the significance of the Compton wavelength and its connection with Quantum Field Theory.

This is the kind of high quality physics content that is lacking on KZread. It doesn't skimp on the details and doesn't dumb down the content for its audience. Superb work, well done

I thought this was a 3brown1blue video. Dammit, I'm still reeling from the Planck constant one. I'll bookmark this and watch it in the morning. edit: Excellent explanation. Very intuitive with no maths stone left unturned. Thanks very much for posting. I like ViaScience's videos which are similarly well done, but your added touch of history and my native British accented narration is very welcome.

Thanks for the feedback. I can guarantee that there are plenty more videos on their way. Only problem is that they take a very long time to make! The next one is almost ready - it focuses on the Bohr model of the atom and the explanation of emission spectra.
Another remarkably lucid and insightful video; we are SO fortunate to be able to access educational masterpieces such as this. THANK YOU. I came to this after listening to an old episode of BBC Radio 4's "In Our Time" series" on the subject of the PHOTON. I'm a huge admirer of Melvyn Bragg (the host) and regard the "In Our Time" archive as an intellectual treasure trove and was therefore shocked that the three SMEs in the studio, after spending 45 minutes on the wave-particle duality of light, concluded by saying they don't personally believe it; these were not "electric universe" nuts or "flat earthers" but tenured faculty from major UK physics departments! Based on your video, it seems Compton set out, in essence, to replicate Einstein's Photoelectric work with X-Rays instead of UV. It is remarkable that, in his apparently triumphant overthrow of Maxwell, he regressed all the way back to Newton and billiard balls; quite astonishing "out of the box" thinking.
One of the best physics channels out there! Please keep up the good work! I highly appreciate that you don't shy away from some math here, makes the thought processes clearer, not more difficult.
Fantastic video. I'm about to start studying Compton scattering, I wanted a good introduction which didn't skimp on the physical background and maths, and this ticked every box. I'll be sharing this with my fellow students.
This is the best channel for students on KZread. Thank you kind sir.

This is my third visit to this video, and not because I did not understand it the first time. It's a beautiful video packing seamlessly the actual drivers towards learning a concept-the motivation and the wonderful implications. I'm sure this is not my last visit. Thank you for such content!

I would maybe suggest starting out each video with a stated goal and a summary of the steps you will take, then periodically checking back in with those steps as you move along. It would really help the viewers stay engaged with your process. Thank you for your work on these, they are a boon to youtube regardless.

Yup. If you replace the momenta with the sides of the triangles in the diagram, you get a proof of the law of cosines. This happens because both momenta and lengths of triangles are proportional to the sines/cosines of the relevant angles.
