What is Compton Scattering?

This video provides a detailed overview of Compton Scattering and its role in the development of quantum physics. The photon model of light is used to explain the Compton shift in wavelength of scattered x-rays by electrons. The principles of energy and momentum conservation are used to calculate the size of the wavelength shift as a function of scattering angle. The video ends with a discussion of the significance of the Compton wavelength and its connection with Quantum Field Theory.

Another remarkably lucid and insightful video; we are SO fortunate to be able to access educational masterpieces such as this. THANK YOU. I came to this after listening to an old episode of BBC Radio 4's "In Our Time" series" on the subject of the PHOTON. I'm a huge admirer of Melvyn Bragg (the host) and regard the "In Our Time" archive as an intellectual treasure trove and was therefore shocked that the three SMEs in the studio, after spending 45 minutes on the wave-particle duality of light, concluded by saying they don't personally believe it; these were not "electric universe" nuts or "flat earthers" but tenured faculty from major UK physics departments! Based on your video, it seems Compton set out, in essence, to replicate Einstein's Photoelectric work with X-Rays instead of UV. It is remarkable that, in his apparently triumphant overthrow of Maxwell, he regressed all the way back to Newton and billiard balls; quite astonishing "out of the box" thinking.

Yup. If you replace the momenta with the sides of the triangles in the diagram, you get a proof of the law of cosines. This happens because both momenta and lengths of triangles are proportional to the sines/cosines of the relevant angles.

Awesome video, at a level of detail appropriate from A-level to masters study. I have seen the derivation done very nicely considering the photon & electrons momenta using the cosine rule for triangles, but there are many ways to skin a cat. Keep it up!

Cheers for the feedback. You are spot on, I have aimed to make these videos accessible to A-level students who are willing to put in a bit of hard work, as well as make them more generally accessible (at least that is my hope). Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, very much appreciated.
