What is Cinerama?

Widescreen movies are the most common type of movies we see today. But pre-1952 the boxy 4:3 aspect ratio was far more common. Cinerama was the format which launched the widescreen revolution that dominated 1950's Hollywood. Check out my video to learn more.

I had the opportunity to see Abel Gance's production of "Napoleon" as a press screening. Originally made in 1927, the format was the squareiish 1.33:1/1.37:1 ratio for all but the last reel. The last reel displayed a forerunner of 3-strip Cinerama. It was projected using an anamorphic lens and depicted the final battle. Three separate views of the battle played together, on 35mm film complete with the separation lines of the images much like the 3-strip format.

Polyvision does not use anamorphic lens originally but 3 projectors.

I think the latest Cinerama is a movie theater with a digital screen equipped with 16K micro LEDs arranged on a curved surface for exclusive use of images, modeled after the Sphere built in Las Vegas. You should be able to easily create this shot using Apple Vision Pro. Therefore, I would like them to build a new Cinerama theater in Hollywood and then expand it internationally.

Movie poster that you show at 0:43 is from the 70mm re-release of This is Cinerama in 1973. The picture you show at 1:48 is from 1957 Raintree County in the MGM Camera 65 process that was converted to 3-strip Cinerama for How The West Was Won.

Very interesting, although having single words appear on the screen as they are spoken was irritating. I saw How The West Was Won in a Cinerama theatre. Very impressive. I now have the blu ray where the ‘joints’ have been [almost] digitally removed. Just checked your video listing and there are lots more to watch!

Seeing a Cinerama film on a Cinerama screen would be really cool! Unfortunately, It seems like Los Angeles is becoming the only place to see films like that.

But 70 mm existed in 1931, wasn't successful. Fox Grandeur. Fun fact, 20th Century Fox used the name and the old equipment

Soviet Union copied Cinerama, so they could show a Cinerama movie about Russia, with sleigh ride, dance performances and showing the nature of the Soviet Union.
