I have a question about my daughter who gags with food. Anyone I explain this to never really gives me any answers. Her OT suggested maybe acid reflux. I'm just wondering if anyone has come across this: she gags at all different types of foods but will still eat those same foods even though she has gaged (and sometimes thrown up) at the sight of them. The food can be any color/smell/texture/tastes. So for example...I was eating a granola bar, as in was opening it she saw it, gaged and then threw up. Moments later she ate a piece of the bar. Or I can give her some food in her high chair, she will eat it then I go to give her more and she'll gag at the sight of it.

@Rayana Patterson... To me that sounds like a sensory issue associated with autism or another sensory processing diagnosis. The inconsistency of the gagging is what really makes me think it's sensory related vs. acid reflux. When she's regulated or adjusted to the food (or her seat, or whatever additional factor there may be), she eats without gagging. When she's not regulated or the experience is new, her little system is overresponsive or hyper-reacting. What I recommend for that is making sure she's regulated (settled and calm) before you want to offer a new food. Most young children respond well to regulating with movement which might mean you have her run, jump, or swing, etc... for a bit before you eat. We talk about sensory issues in show #438. I hope you'll check that out! I'm also preparing a new course specifically about sensory issues, so please subscribe to the channel so you'll see that one when it's released!

Isn’t a granola bar too difficult to chew for very young children, under 2? Too sticky, and too grainy to bite?
