WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I was born in Sweden, Scandinavia. The default position from almost every adult person I met while growing up was that Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, god's and ghosts belong to the realm of fairy tales and superstition. To me there is no difference between believing in a god or believing in a goblin for example. An adult making a superstitious claim is not taken seriously by most people here. That's why it's so fascinating to me to listen to the atheist experience and talk heathen where so many adults openly admits to being a "fairy tale" believer. I think it's dangerous when citizens that can vote in democratic elections lack the proper education to make sound evaluations of political ideas separate from religious dogma.

If you poke a brain, thoughts and ideas can be changed and manipulated. Therefore, thoughts and ideas can be demonstrated to be a result of the brain.

  • @starfishsystems

    @starfishsystems

    3 жыл бұрын

Speaking only of logical inference, your argument is not quite correct. You're claiming that brains are NECESSARY for producing thought, but you've only shown that they're SUFFICIENT. It would be better to say that we can't demonstrate any thought taking place without corresponding brain acrivity. But we're at a disadvantage until we know objectively what thoughts are and how they operate. The problem is that our means of identifying thoughts is subjective. Worse, it relies on our limited ability to introspect about what we experience subjectively. These are, in a sense, epistemological problems. It's important also to watch out for unfalsifiable claims that may be injected into the discussion, for example that our thoughts or our consciousness originate somewhere "out there" where they can't be observed, and then manifest through brain function. A popular variation is that the entire universe is conscious. There's no evidence of this, and it's not clear how such evidence could ever be found even in principle, but many people accept speculation as a substitute for evidence.

Well, it's true that there is a bootstrapping condition, but that's unavoidably true of every possible propositional system. Formal systems such as logic and set theory and so on are rigorously explicit about calling attention to it. The ground assertions upon which the system is based are called "axioms" and they're pared down to the most basic few that will produce a coherent system. That could not be more different than a vague hand wave that "god did anything that will fix inconsistent features of this system."

@@richardbeaumont7960 This continual labelling things as fallacies has in itself become a fallacy. The fallacy fallacy. Until such times, as someone can demonstrate a consciousness outside of matter existing, to house and form it. Then it is impossible. As flight for humans was impossible for most of human history. The problem is always caused by people treating ideas as if they are realities. They are not. Technically, anything might exist except nothing, so virtually anything imaginable might be possible? So what? Quarg the god eater was created by the gods to solve over population by gods who kept making more gods. Quarg ate them all and then starved to death. That's why gods were always running about in the old days doing magic but they don't nowadays because of Quarg..? It's not impossible is it? In the case of flight. We knew it was possible, because birds, bats and insects could do it. Humans couldn't. They still can't without the aid of technology. It is impossible for humans to fly especially by just flapping their arms. There are NO examples of disembodied intelligence anywhere. 100% of the time, awareness requires matter to house it. @@AndyCampbellMusic The fact that we have never observed something nor understand how it might work does not in itself make it impossible. As soon as you say it is impossible, you are making a positive claim and putting the burden of proof on yourself. In my view that is a mistake. I am an atheist on the basis of skepticism to any claim that cannot be supported by good evidence. I do not need to prove something is impossible to justify not believing it. Your Quarg story is not impossible as far as I know, but I summarily dismiss it as lacking any evidence. I do not know if "god" is coherent, or possible, or for that matter impossible. I do not need to know any of these things to NOT believe any god claims that have been made or could be made. The burden of proof is not on me. You state that no consciousness has been demonstrated outside of a material substrate (I fully agree), but also by inference you claim to know every conceivable way in which a consciousness could ever manifest, and have already ruled them all out. That is a rather godlike hubris you are claiming for yourself right there. I am more grounded in my own limitations. I do not believe in any gods or immaterial consciousness, because none have been demonstrated. It is that simple.

@@sugartoothYT You are kind of missing the point. In science, engineering and maths etc, where complexity and near absolute precision are necessary, that's where minute and convoluted detail are required. In general discussion of obvious things, such nitpicking detail is not necessary and the people that unnecessarily introduce it, are generally trying to cover up a weak position. Complexity, is very often, the first refuge of the charlatan and the last of deluded. All claims for the existence of "gods" fit this category, as they are imaginary and contingent upon the human brain, having evolved to a level, where it is capable of imagining and inventing them. Put simply without unnecessary verbosity. No humans = No "gods" Many humans = Many "gods". The reason for that is perfectly obvious. Imaginary things require "real" things to imagine them. Take that to whatever level of convoluted detail and argument. You want. It will still be true. End of story Humans cannot fly by flapping their arms. End of story.. People who claim "intellectual honestly" are very often attempting to disguise intellectual dishonesty and about to indulge in sophistry, obfuscation and intellectual narcissism. Whether someone at some time in the future, genetically modifies a human to have hollow bones like a bird and grow large wings is irrelevant. The caller puts me in mind of that early interactive software program called Eliza, which offered a variety of simplistic but cryptic responses in answer to questions put to it. The idea was to show how well an obviously naive algorithm could pass the Turing Test. It sermed smarter than it was because it parroted all the right phrases in a way that might (charitably) have indicated understanding of the subject under discussion. But in fact no understanding was involved, just basic rephrasings of the questions put to it. Likewise, it's pretty clear that the caller isn't actually doing any thinking, merely reading off a script in a way that simulates engagement. It's like the lights are on but nobody's home.

I asked him to show me the evidence he had to prove his god was the only source for sound reasoning and logic and he explained that because I couldn’t use reason to justify my reasoning I wouldn’t understand his evidence, I said if we were to follow his logic then we both have god as a source for reasoning and this shouldn’t be an issue. I wasn’t all that familiar with how to argue against it as I’m pretty new at this but I explained to him that I simply presupposed my logic and reasoning as reasonable because I have little choice, I can therefore test it and make predictions by matching it up to other peoples logic and reasoning and finding it to be fairly consistent can trust it to a pretty high degree. Is this infallible? Not at all but it no different than being a brain in a jar living in the matrix, you work with what you have. He was pretty lost by that. After asking for his evidence based on his logic for the 4th of 5th time he seemed to lose interest in the conversation and asked me to please stop talking to him, this after two days of back ad forth. I wished I’d thought of it sooner. Was the presupposition argument on my part not a good argument? I don’t know but I would have thrown in anything to shut this sanctimonious asshole down after he asserts that he’s got an advantage over the rest of us because he has an invisible friend. I have to admit the “please don’t talk to me anymore” comment was gratifying.

As a practical mstter, we have to test our ideas against the real world. That goes for formal systems as well. So you're on the right track, but you can do better if you gain some understanding of formal systems as well. (The problem with as hoc testing of ideas is that you can, merely by chance, fail to find a disproof that in fact exists.) Formal systems have the advantage not that they can prove thenselves correct (no system can do that) but that the axioms - the strictly unprovable elements - are explicit and minimal. That makes them very useful tools. Saying "god did it" is a useless tool.

Come on now that's not true for all of us. It's nice to think that we're all skeptics and smart people who've done research, but most atheists probably just think "gods don't seem to exist" and that's absolutely fine. Don't assume that all atheists care about science or would "refuse to worship a God and would rather go to hell". Matt's views don't represent the views of all atheists either. This confuses theists and makes them think that we are atheists because "science" and the AXP told us to be. Apart from that I generally agree with you. Also you don't have to read the bible to become an atheists, that's another thing I keep seeing. Although I understand that living in a Christian country you probably will end up reading it at some point but the idea that you have to study every religion, debunk them and study science and skepticism to justify being an atheist is silly. We do not have to know about or give a shit about religious teachings just like Christians automatically assume Hinduism has been disproven and won't bother studying it. What is atheism based on? Easy. You claim God is real, I don't believe you. Atheism is based on, I don't believe your claim is true.

People do actually understand atheism but don't realise it. Most of the planet is already atheistic towards every other religion thats not theirs.

I'm sure that I watched this video when it was originally posted and probably commented on it then, but I thought that I'd post this comment based solely on the title, without having watched the video again yet. If the caller does indeed ask the question "what is atheism based on?" then it simply demonstrates yet again that theists don't understand atheists or atheism. Atheism is a lack of belief in the existence of a god. What is a lack of belief in anything else generally based on? The lack of a reason to believe in it. The fact that they seem to think that their belief in something is or should be the default when they require reasons to believe in everything else shows just how dishonest or delusional they are. If they don't believe in alien abductions, Big Foot, the Loch Ness Monster, etc, etc, then they obviously understand that you need to be provided with a reason to believe something in order to believe it. They just don't apply the same standard to their religion because they don't want to because they know they can't.

Wait, this caller thinks the dead don't bleed? Has he ever seen a dead deer hung up from a tree so the blood drains out? Yes, the heart has stopped but then gravity takes over. Sorry for the revolting image, but trying to dress out an animal that hasn't been bled makes a nasty mess and can ruin the venison.

People become very anxious when it’s found that granmas stories aren’t as easily buttressed as when you were younger. I’m inclined to think that silence is the best defence. Cheers Mike

I get the sense that the term "Atheism" confuses people, mainly because it's not really an ISM. There is no dogma, no holy book, no rituals, no worship, no leaders, etc. I've been a lifelong non-believer and Atheist. Still am. And I have never practiced an ISM. There is nothing to practice as an Atheist. Just non-belief in gods. That's it. To me, the term Atheism is virtually as useless as Evolutionist. As an Atheist, I understand that I merely hold a falsifiable position that can be shut down wit proof that gods exist. Non-Stamp Collectorism.

I totally see your point, but the overwhelming majority of people do not collect stamps. Just as the vast majority of folk don't take astrology seriously. So, there's no need to label any contrary positions. Nor do stamp collectors or followers of astrology attempt to legislate those ideas into our lives. The same can't be said for god beliefs, where non-believers like you and me are in a pretty small minority around the world. But yes, as Sam Harris (who agrees with you) says, ideally there shouldn't even be such a thing as 'atheism'.

Spirituality describes the behaviors people engage in that help them connect to one another, gain perspective and self awareness, and find meaning for their lives. At least I think that's generally what people are talking about. They of course add supernatural mumbo-jumbo, buy I personally think we should take that word back. It has value.

Any belief in God comes from arguing from the fallacy of ignorance. These people seem to be unable to say the words 'we don't know'. And they see people who are willing to say there are certain things we don't know and may never know as inadequate.
