Fun fact. The old LED platform displays (the larger varaints) were one of the few passenger facing areas where station codes were used. For example stopping all except SOU. You used to also be able to use them in an old journey planner to avoid ambiguity and extra steps when even typing the full station name would give several to choose from.

Some are easy to guess, others less so. Also depends if you have to match to a single line or the whole network etc.

One of my favourite codes is MMR for Middle Gorge. The station was originally going to be called Marymeade after the adjacent catholic school, but this went against the government’s naming conventions. When it was realised, the station was renamed, but the code had already been allocated, meaning Middle Gorge’s code has little connection to its name.

Indeed a very interesting one!

Station codes parallel the travel industry destination codes (IATA) for airports. These were originally developed in the early days of telegraphs and computers when saving space or time (on a morse code telegraph network) with precise accuracy were high priorities.

Mernda is MDD bc every other combination of letters they could think of was already being used for some other station in Vic. Another oddity: Southern Cross is SSS bc it used to be Spencer St Stn. SHM for Sandy sometimes got confused with Sydenham, so Sydenham got officially changed to Watergardens WGS, b4 that Watergardens was the public name but internally it was called Sydenham. A lot of the codes not in regular use weren't memorised by staff but were easy to figure out, for instance if a driver had their run altered to NS WRM it was obvious it meant non-stop at West Richmond.

At some skyrail stations there are light-up signs that show the station code at ground level

Very common format for station codes is first letter, middle letter, last letter. Examples: FKN = FranKstoN, FSY = FootScraY, BBN = BlackBurN, GHY = GlenHuntlY, CBE = CranBournE, SGS = ShowGroundS, ...
