Dear friends and followers, always wanted to know more about airplane holding procedures? This is the right video for you.
A holding pattern for instrument flight rules (IFR) aircraft is usually a racetrack pattern based on a holding fix. This fix can be a radio beacon such as a non-directional beacon (NDB) or VHF omnidirectional range (VOR). The fix is the start of the first turn of the racetrack pattern. Aircraft will fly towards the fix, and once there will enter a predefined racetrack pattern. A standard holding pattern uses right-hand turns and takes approximately 4 minutes to complete (one minute for each 180 degree turn, and two one-minute straight ahead sections).[1] Deviations from this pattern can happen if long delays are expected; longer legs (usually two or three minutes) may be used, or aircraft with distance measuring equipment (DME) may be assigned patterns with legs defined in nautical miles rather than minutes. Less frequent turns are more comfortable for passengers and crew. Additionally, left-hand turns may be assigned to some holding patterns if there are airspace or traffic restrictions nearby.
In the absence of a radio beacon, the holding fix can be any fixed point in the air, and can be created using two crossing VHF omnidirectional range radials (also called intersection), or it can be at a specific distance from a VOR using a coupled distance measuring equipment. When DME is used, the inbound turn of the racetrack may be permanently defined by distance limits rather than in minutes. Furthermore, in appropriately equipped aircraft, GPS waypoints may be used to define the holding pattern, eliminating the need for ground-based navigational aids entirely.
A hold for visual flight rules aircraft is usually a (smaller) racetrack pattern flown over something easily recognizable on the ground, such as a bridge, highway intersection or lake.
he primary use of a holding is delaying aircraft that have arrived at their destination but cannot land yet because of traffic congestion, poor weather, or runway unavailability (for instance, during snow removal or emergencies). Several aircraft may fly the same holding pattern at the same time, separated vertically by 1,000 feet or more. This is generally described as a stack or holding stack. As a rule, new arrivals will be added at the top. The aircraft at the bottom of the stack will be taken out and allowed to make an approach first, after which all aircraft in the stack move down one level, and so on. Air traffic control (ATC) will control the whole process, in some cases using a dedicated controller (called a stack controller) for each individual pattern.
One airport may have several holding patterns; depending on where aircraft arrive from or which runway is in use, or because of vertical airspace limitations.
Since an aircraft with an emergency has priority over all other air traffic, they will always be allowed to bypass the holding pattern and go directly to the airport (if possible). Obviously, this causes more delays for other aircraft already in the stack.
But see more in this video!
Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe

Saw this video at 17 years old when I was a maniac for flying and followed Joe since he started the channel Now I’m 21 doing my instrument rating and coming back to these videos You’ve played a huge inspiration 💯
Great tutorials series. What I love and captivated about Captain Joe's tutorials is he spoke straight to the point with little diversions and no pause fillers. Great!! 👍👏👏
Hey captain Joe. I actually went on an A320 last Friday and I did hear that barking sound as we were pushing away from the gate. Thanks to you I was able to explain to my dad, another aviation enthusiast, to what that sound was. -thanks❤️
I recently got interested in aviation and I want to work at an airport after finishing school. I love your videos so much bc you explain everything extremely well and they're really helpful! :)

Ever since I started working at the airport I love to learn new stuff about aviation and your channel is perfect for it!! Appreciate every video you make
I always enjoy watching your videos. I remember back about 1970 I was a young USAF F-4 crew chief at Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona. I was returning to base after a short leave to my home in Detroit, Michigan. There was a plane change at Chicago O'hare and when we entered the holding pattern we were entirely over land (about the middle of Michigan) and as we continued to fly the pattern we gradually moved west until we were entirely over Lake Michigan. I was quite amused at the time.
Wspaniały , kolejny wykład. Dzięki Kpt.Joe
Great Video Joe! Love how much work you put into your videos!
Glad You're back Joe, With another new explanation. Keep the good work up 😊
Looking sharp there Captain Joe, from your LiveATC provider here in San Francisco California! Keep up the great work! 😁
Brilliant video Joe. Very well explained! I love the videos u make! Please keep up the great work! Thanks Joe!
I'm not a pilot, just a girl terrified of flying that has to do it too much. I watch your videos on the plane and it really helps. I'm far less likely to panic when listening to you explain how everything works. Even stuff like this really makes me think about all the effort and thought that went into the flights I'm taking. I don't know why but its comforting. Thank you for doing what you do ! :)

I think It is always good to know more about things you are afraid of. It is also good to think about the technical improvements they have made on new planes. Today the aircrafts are better and safer than ever before, and procedures have improved.
watching your videos made me feel like this is the most awesome job to have, im currently finnishing of my study in mechatronics so after that i can start to become a pilot.
Confident enough to thumbs up before watching.

Wow finally I see doing actual math at the job ! Prima Captain Joe ! Danke für Das !!
Good lord thats technical!! Great job Captain!! Pilots are a cut above the rest!
Captain Joe, do you mind doing a video on Standard Instrument Departures(SID) and Standard Terminal Arrivals (STAR)?
What a crazy job for ATC guys and pilots. Big respect for them...
Man, you burned my brains out here! :) Great video, keep up the good work.
A 4th video on where holding patterns are defined might make an interesting topic. Where are they positioned, why they are there and angled such as they are, and how airports close to each other (such as all the smaller airports clustered around London) deal with so many holding patterns, approaches, and departures in a tight space. Examples of airports with multiple holding patterns, or how emergency extra patterns are setup/used could be interesting. - A video on mass emergency handling on its own might even be worth it. Such as looking at how air traffic control dealt with the 2001 air space closure, and getting the rest of the planes back on the ground safely.
Very good Joe as always
I'm so glad somebody figured all this out because it seems complicated as hell to me.
Hello Captain Joe, love your vids! Keep up the good work... Can you make a video about what you think of the circular runways thing, thanks
Great tutorial Captain Joe
Once again great video explanation joe. You are best trainer. Definitely you must be one of the best capable pilots. You might be best teacher though.

Nice one, joe!
Thank you Joe for your simple explanation
Allways improving my skills, with help of captain Joe
Captain Joe. I enjoy watching your videos about the real world of flight. Like it or not, a lot of your followers will be avid flight simmers, which is as close as most people will get to aviation. I hope you'll do a video on your thoughts about the advancement in home flight sim software along with your opinions of it in general. Thanks
Thank you so much captain Joe...
Thank you Captain Joe. 😘
More capt.thanks for help
Hey Joe ,really like your videos and I think I have watched all the videos can you make a video regarding types of landing gear and why airplanes use different types of landing gear
I already knew about this but watched anyway because your videos are the best ❤️❤️😆
Great video Joe! :)
Great video!!!
Awesome content. As always. When you get done with your 747 Type rating, do make a video with Mentour Pilot(Petter).
