    I find it interesting that coil springs in this setup are not captive I have only really seen coilovers and 4x4 springs which are always attached at both the top and bottom of the spring

    Well, it is what it is, and it works, I guess. I'm not sure I have a clear understanding of what you're describing, I should look it up.
