    In a different life, someone defined for me what a Combat knife was. "It' s just a knife, what matters is what you use it for, gutting a pig or gutting a man. IF you are looking for some fancy specs how's this? Full tang, grippy scales, pommel, high carbon steel, clip point and sharp, long enough to poke holes into all the important bits, a full cross guard so you don't run your booger pickers over the edge for trying to stab them in the helmet.". I kinda ran out of questions, that day.

    When I was in the belgian military, my go-to knife was a Gerber Prodigy. It did really well in any tasks: survival courses, trenching exercises and I even won a knife throwing contest (after a long drinking session with my unit). I find it quite handy, not too large, pretty light and the sheath was very good (silent and tough). I carried it on my right side at mid thigh level and I'm one of those lucky lefties who uses their left hand for precision (p.e. handgun) and their right hand for power (punching, stabbing, etc). Thanks for your video, I finally decided to subscribe even if I don't always agree. And sorry for the broken english.

    Thanks for clarifying about what the difference between the combat knife and a survival knife. I always consider my hollow handle knifes with the compass in them combat ready knifes anyway. But my favorite knifes in this video would probably be the Schrade hollow handle survival knife, the Gerber LHR Combat knife and your Dbad War Machine. I love those designs.

    This is very interesting to compare Chinese Bowie and American Bowie. Their geometry and a clip are very different. I have now the real one from Cowboy, and a lot of Mtech and Master Cutlery stuff. Chinese Bowie is more looks like a though big drop-point, with the illusion of the clip. American is more standard, more beautiful and we all know, that Cowboy is very good in blades. Honestly, that was his choice to find me the most popular and well done usa epic blade. Now I am sitting with my bowies, and thinking about the geometry and a I see, its a big idea, but some information I don't know, how to introduce it. This video is the best, I found about the main theme!

    After several deployments i can simply say it is a knife that you feel comfortable with out in the field. It can hold up, hold and edge, be used in different applications and hold an edge. Plus, we are weight conscious, ounces = pounds, pounds = pain, with that being said i have a collection but my go to has always been my Ka-bar USMC. I swapped the leather sheath for a sturdy, light weight one. It does what i need and never failed me, it’s actually in my trust to go to my son after he plants me in the ground someday. It’s been a great companion for me since i got it in 2019 and now is retired locked up in my Grandpas WWII USMC foot locker with my armor and some other gear from Iraq and Afghanistan. Also, take a look at halfbreed, they are from Australia, expensive and a bit heavy plus shipping takes a bit, but they are awesome if your camping or need a good fixed blade to carry, most are D2 steel, some are super steel, but they look mean and are incredibly durable, Rambo would be proud to carry one loll. Mine doesn’t have the sentimental attachment my Ka-Bar does so now that I am a civilian i use my halfbreed and CRKT Kukri.

  • @DonnieBAllDay

    @DonnieBAllDay

    4 ай бұрын

    The KA-BAR is a great Utility knife and even better hunting knife, but for me, having used a knife in combat, it wouldn't be one I'd choose for that application. The originals mabey, but definitely not these modern ones. I have the Halfbreed large Infantry but am selling it. The grip just doesn't work well for guys with big hands. I'd rather the Tops Zero Dark 30 and would absolutely take my dbad War Machine over those. Gotta say though, the Gerber I was issued in Afghanistan is something I would take anywhere. The grip makes the knife for combat and its miles above most others. I love how you keep yous in your GFs WWII box. What an awesome way to pass on pieces of America War stories

    Is a naive teenager, when I first joined the Infantry, I embarked on a quest to find the single, most perfect, all-around, be all, do all military field knife. It took my young, dumb ass about 2 years to figure out that there's simply no such fuckin thing! I came to the realization that it's all about having the right tool for the specific job. After a shitload of field tests, I finally whittled my collection down and, for my last three combat deployments, my kit always included four specific knives... Buckmaster 184- used for pounding, chopping and sawing. Hell, I even used the primary cutting edge to cut the metal bands off our ammo crates on a couple of occasions. I ditched the bulky plastic sheath and used a Blackhawk nylon Molle-compatible jump sheath and had it strapped to the left torso of my body armor. CKRT M16-10KS folder- 7 inches overall with a partially serrated tanto tipped blade for smaller cutting duties carried in a nylon sheath with velcro closure that was a securely strapped onto the front of my jump sheath. Gerber multiplier- basically a mini tool box with a cap-crimper that was always attached to my rigger's belt in it's company-provided nylon sheath worn next to the rear belt loop at the small of my back. Cold steel recon tanto- I carried this in case my operational world ever went to shit and I found myself actually having to knifefight somebody. That razor sharp cutting edge could really piece somebody up and, if the occasion called for it, that thick-ass tanto tip would be capable of penatrating skull bone. Thankfully, I never had to take that one out of its sheath except to wipe it down occasionally. I carried that one in its' kydex sheath secured to the leg strap right in front of my sidearms' blackhawk drop-holster. Everyone has their own personal favorites and preferences but those four items were the ones that I personally came to appreciate and, through three deployments, they never let me down. Its great seeing videos from a fellow knife enthusiast. Rock on,brother!

    @Donnie B All Day Thanks for your answer to my question, Donnie! But how would blade strikes on a fairly sturdy dual edged blade like the CS Shanghai Shadow damage the blade as compared to a a single edged bowie knife (with a sturdy spine)? I have seen the Cold Steel Shanghai Shadow get used in KZread videos for bushcraft activities like chopping wood and the edge still remained functional and sharp after all that continuous abuse. Also, would the ostensibly superior thrusting capability of a dual-edged dagger over a single-edged bowie through an enemy wearing 4 layers of denim clothing (as used in FBI bullet vs ballistic gelatin testing) mitigate this weakness? It seems like a lot of real life knife fights seen from surveillance videos are mostly oriented to thrusting as opposed to striking or slashing with the blade.

  • @DonnieBAllDay

    @DonnieBAllDay

    Жыл бұрын

    I did a video where I clashed the edges of two great blades. Both suffered damage. I then did a video where I used the spine of a Bowie to snap another knife completely in half. No damage to the Bowie spine. The thinner the steel, the more damage it could take. Samurai in movies show drawn out sword fights clashing steel for 10 minutes. In real life, they would try and end a fight in seconds and not clash blades to preserves their edges.

    Can anyone tell me the specific definitions and differentiating characteristics between a tactical knife, fighting knife, combat knife, field knife, and utility knife? Are they all in their own separate categories or is it like an "all fighting knives are combat knives but not all combat knives are fighting knives" kind of thing? The knife industry uses the buzzwords fighting, combat, field, utility, and tactical interchangeably which makes each word seem meaningless. Side question: Where would you say small daggers or karambits like the Benchmade SOCP Combo fit in to the whole "tactical knives" spectrum? I occasionally hear them called PDW (personal defense weapon I assume) knives.

  • @DonnieBAllDay

    @DonnieBAllDay

    That would be one long answer. Some fighting knives are built purely as offensive tools. Therefore all fighting knives aren't combat knives. Companies try and sway buyers through wording and defending their stances by saying all fighting is "combat". Bullshit. Its not "combat' to shiv someone in the back, yet some blades are made for that purpose. Half of it is just money making schemes

After 1 year I left for Kosovo.. And the whole contingent bought a black kabar with the writing BELKAN.. I love that knife but it was too big to be carried on the plate carrier. But for me no existe a soldier in the world without a ka bar 😂. . When I entered the more serious regiment we were given the extrema ratio MULTINATIONAL LANDING FORCE in TITANIUM... Of the Italian army together with the fulcrum bayonet also extrema ratio" but I returned that one with the rifle ". Similar use of the M9.bayonet but with a different design... . And as first place in the course I received a GERBER MARK 2 like a premium.. which I still have in my showcase... In Iraq I bought a crkt m16 at the PX which is still my pocket knife.. Very good. 1. the skill is in the person, not the tool. You mentioned more people are killed with shovels in combat than with knives. Ok. I have had training in folder, fixed blade, khukri, entrenching tool, sword fighting and fighting from the ground with a tool with the opponent standing. The strike movements are essentially the same and limited by human ergonomics. So, you can learn the basic movements (ignoring the addition of concepts like jujitsu added in) very easily. 2. A trained person can be dangerously with a 4 inch fixed blade as well as a movie Rambo type knife. In your life, a combat knife is going to be the one you deploy when you are in a fight. So, you had better start working on situational awareness to avoid an encounter and take some basic classes over and over again in escrima to learn how to deliver blows with a stick or a knife.

    I left fighting with a 14-0 record and a belt to call my own. There's one thing I know about fighting, a guy with no training can still whoop up on a blackbelt. It doesn't come down to training as much as it does the sheer will to not lose. I was lucky enough to have trained with some of the best, but I've seen guys get there hands raised whose only fight training was at a bar. And most deaths come from blunt objects from guys who never even played little league. Sometimes the lucky shot wins

    To me a defense knife can be an outdoors knife, or a hunting or skinning knife, or anything within reach. A "Tactical" knife to me does not = "Combat", I think of firefighters scuba divers law enforcement military even fishing hilariously. The weight distribution can affect the thrust accuracy, how affective it is at rebound rather than sticking in and defensive slashes (attack vs defend/stabbing vs not stabbing to death). I really hate how tactical gets associated with combat so often, thanks for clarifying the utility use because who likes to resort to killing someone??

    Donnie, what about the Gerber Mark I versus the Gerber Mark II? You probably know the story, but during the Vietnam conflict, GIs bought the Mark I in the BX, PX, Naval Exchange whatever. Then the exchanges quit selling the Mark I because they looked too scary, and they were obviously meant for one purpose only. Then Gerber re-designed them with serrations so they didn't look so scary so that the exchanges would continue to sale them. Funny, but I guess the exchanges were happy selling knives that were against the "laws of warfare".

The classic Buck knives, are mainly designed for cutting meat, so I think, they must be great for fighting too. So, but why you select a knife with a wider blade for combat? Makes it more damage? What´s your thoughts about this classic Solingen Bowie, with C60 carbon steel, drop forged? I guess they're "fighting" E-tools. Haha

    @@DonnieBAllDay well i was just an Army grunt that wasn’t issued any fixed blade other than a bayonet that was controlled by the armory. I did however have at various times in combat these blades: USAF piolot knife I sharpened the swedge on it, and Moro bolos: pyra & a barung, and a few folders: platoon issued gerber applegate. PX/ clothing sales :buck strider, cs ak47 & recon 1. I never killed anyone with any of them lol🫡🍻😎

    My only issued blade was the Gerber LMF Infantry II and I have to say, I love it. Plus it's still got the blood stains on it. I don't think I said it yet, but thank you for your service brother@@williamblackburn8541

    I have made it about seven minutes into this and I just gotta say... No... First of all, assuming you just stuck 7 inches of knife into a guy, he now has a seven inch deep wound that is about an inch and a half wide. Your saw blade is going to slow down your pulling the knife out or burn more calories making you tireder and slowing down what is obviously the desperate use of a last ditch weapon against another possible target. You have just left a gaping wound without tearing the skin on the way out. If you have time and feel the need to do further damage look up sewing machine attack. Second of all, if you are worried about leaving an unhealable wound, you have not only violated the Geneva convention (YEAH, i KNOW, WE DIDN'T SIGN IT, YOU WILL STILL GET BUSTED FOR IT.) But in addition you did shitty knife work. If you are worried about them healing properly that means that you missed the point of stabbing someone and didn't kill them. Go play GI Joe somewhere else.

    I almost feel bad that you haven't got a clue about what you're talking about. Have you ever pulled a tooth spined blade from out of a body? By your response, let me answer that for you. No. You have not. In order to struggle to the point where you're getting, "tireder"(stressing on the der), than you have either never once in your life used a knife, or you have the weakest sissy arms on the planet. In this case, I'm guessing both are true. As far as sticking a blade in seven inches and not hitting the appropriate kill zone, ending your assailant with clean ease, guess what? They are fighting back and trying like hell not to get stabbed. Also, it is NOT against the Geneva Convention to twist a blade in order to cause more damage. That's an asinine statement. In a fight, bodies are naturally moving and twisting. The motion is going to happen regardless. The next time I'm building a bomb and arming C4, I'll remember that you, are in fact not there, because while I'm out soldiering, you are pretending to know what that means.

    The Geneva Convention rules are intended to ban weapons that cause suffering without giving any advantage in winning. Shooting an enemy will do the trick but ripping his face apart with a dum dum bullet or exploding bullet isn't necessary. A sawtooth design can hang up on bone or equipment and isn't good in a fighting knife, fantasies about twisting the knife and ripping up the victim notwithstanding ). That bayonet is heavy to carry, by the way. The Kabar worked fine for the Marines at Pelilieu and Iwo Jima. Grade a knife on what a knife is for, not how good a saw, pry bar or trench digger it it can be. This guy makes meth heads sound calm and collected. Good grief !

    Sorry Karen, I didn't mean to 'offend' you. And as far as the KA-BAR, it was used more for opening rations than it was for fighting. More enemy combatants were maimed and killed from a soldiers shovel than his knife. Maximum damage per swing without sissies worrying about getting hung up in some flimsy cotton uniform. Good grief
