Think of the throwing arm as a flag. If you can see the flag sticking out you are safe, assuming the trap has been shut off at the main switch or disconnected from the battery. If you can't see the flag, meaning the arm is tucked under the machine, the machine is armed. Anything that operates the motor control section and causes the motor to turn that tiny amount that pushes the arm "over the top" of the cam, that powerful stretched spring unleashes all that stored energy into the arm and the arm in turn unleashes all that stored energy into the clay - or your arm, head, teeth or eyes if they are in the way. You have to keep your head and limbs outside that circle of pain and destruction unless the trap is disarmed and de energized. If you are going to work on the machine in any capacity, disarm it and disconnect it from the power supply. You can test it hot with the safety switch but make sure you are clear of the arm circle.
