Well university is a legit institute that's regulated by government and has existed from back when South Africa was colonised. They are hundreds and hundreds years old. We have 26 universities country-wide. Colleges don't have the amount of land Universities have. They are new about 30 years old or less and they are popping up in the city. Colleges are mostly buying buildings and flipping them. They don't usually own sports grounds or swimming pools or gyms. They dont offer the amount of variety that universities offer. A lot of colleges are fly by night in South Africa. It's a quick business and scam for others. It could take years before a college is recognised for offering a programme they don't have authority from Department of Education to do so. Let me put it this way: ain't no lecturer in a college with a PhD (very rare) they usually have honours and are working part time to get masters. Or they just have a degree. Lecturers at these fly by night colleges are peeps who graduated but their grades didn't get them jobs in their specialisation. Companies in South Africa at least, hire university students first, then students from trusted colleges next and then it'll trickle down. As black Africans not getting into a university and having to settle for a college is frowned upon especially if your parents are middle class or upper middle class. We now have programs where high school seniors (matrics) can apply to rewrite their finals so they take a year to study and write the finals to try meet entry requirements. People do this again and again. Spending 3 years trying to get into university. It's university or nothing for some of us.

Blesses specially in South Africa would usually be a man old enough to be you father whose married with kids sometimes almost the same age as you. It's sometimes a purely sex in exchange for shopping trips to Dubai, money for weaves, he pays for your apartment whilst you're in University or even if you're not studying, car, expensive clothing etc. Others actually date and are "in love". It's an occupation for some of our youth who don't want to work or others who are trying to feed impoverished family.

In SA, Universities are public institutions that offer a range of qualifications up to doctorate and post doctorates. The are different types of colleges. Some offer high school level technical qualifications to post high school qualifications. Also private institutions that are equivalent to universities are called colleges because the term university applies to public only. A university will have faculties of Arts, Science, Accounting etc. Colleges currently offer up to Masters Degrees. Doctorates and post doctorates are at Uni. Entry requirements for a qualification, eg. Bachelor of Commerce, are the same for University and College. There are standard entry and exit requirements for a specific qualification no matter where you study. Most students with poor grades go to colleges because most certificates and diplomas are offered at colleges and most degrees are offered at universities. So the psychology in SA among students and some employers is that a Bachelor's from a college carries less weight than one from University because the requirements are not the same. This incorrect as requirements are regulated by a single regulatory body for all qualifications.

So the mentality of college and University is how Americans view tech schools and 4 year colleges..the entry process is different, but you still have to pass to graduate either one of them

You are absolutely correct! I have a friend in Toronto, Canada and they see it the same way. A College to them is like a community or junior college in the USA! A University is a 4 year institution for them! She was a track athlete and she received a partial scholarship from Boston College and she turned it down because she thought that it was a 2 year school! She received a scholarship from a smaller university in the USA and she took it. She didn't realize what she turned down until later! FYI.
