Textbook definition of 20/20 vision:
The ability to distinguish an image that subtends 5 minutes of arc at a 20 foot distance.
The numerator of 20/20 defines the testing distance of the person being tested and the denominator defines the testing distance that a person with “20/20” vision would have to stand in order to see the same sized letters.
Definition of legal blindness in the US:
If someone has 20/200 vision or less in the better seeing eye (with a corrective lens) or has less than 20 degrees of visual field, then they are considered legally blind.
Question of the Day: When was your last eye exam? How good are your eyes? Can you see 20/20? Let me know in the comments!

About this video: When was the last time you checked your visual acuity or had an eyesight test? At your last eye exam, an optometrist or another eye care professional likely completed an eye test where they measured your visual acuity by completing the snellen test or reading the snellen chart. If you were fortunate enough, your vision corrected to at least the 20/20 line. But what is 20/20 vision? What does 20/20 vision mean? Check out this video to find out.

    Not sure. What I can say is when I hold my hand up, 6 to 8 inches from my face, I can see it clearly. After that it starts to get fuzzy. I've had glasses since end of Grade 2.

    Great video! I had my last eye test a month ago, and here they don't tell us if we have 20/20 vision, but instead the strength of our lens required to improve our vision. So you might have -6.0 in one eye that became -6.25 at your next checkup. Not sure if you've already done a video on discussing what that number means, but otherwise would love to see it!

    My corrected vision is at least 20/10, probably a little bit better because the very bottom line is perfectly clear with glasses. People with "perfect" vision are often surprised when I can read things they can't see.

  • @lolerie

    @lolerie

    That is because they do not have perfect vision. Most refractometers only have 0.25 resolution, so anything below 0.25 is not visable. For example I have -4.12 sphere and -4.87 cylender om my right eye which is further rounded on those meters. Also glasses cannot be done with this in mind. There is also keratometers that allow to see the astigmatism components.

    This is like what happened to my mom as a newborn, in an incubator, but it may have been heat rather than too much oxygen, or was both. She has that on top of genetic eye issues. I seem to have inherited genetic issues. My mom is vague on what her actual eye issues are, like if severe myopia, if bad floaters, and so on. She had cataract surgery and still has issues. She had a retinal detachment about 10-11 years ago. I had one 2 years ago.

I found out I have keratoconus, and now my vision is 20/200 in both eyes, over the course of about the last 4 years. I am "20/40" in both eyes but that doesnt account for the fact my eyes were dilated during the test and I still have the starburst effect. I just got fitted with scleral lenses on wednesday and I am so excited. They got me to 20/20 on the first iteration and didnt expect to ever get me to 20/20. Thanks for your videos

    Doctor Eye, I want to ask you something that's been puzzling me on this test. I noticed that this type of test is done in a dark room with a lit screen. But on a dark room the iris of the eye is opening, letting more light in. One's cornea may not be constant in shape and it can distort if the iris is more open, because light is entering the eye on a much wider area through cornea. But if there is a lot of light (like in a sunny day), light enters through a narrower hole in the eye and maybe it doesn't affect the part of the cornea where you may have problems. So, why is the tests concluded in the dark? Will glasses work the same in the dark and in the light?

    Very Very good question. At that level of vision, we document just that. That is when the standard charts begin to fail. We do have some low vision charts but with extremely poor vision...hand motion and light perception is the best way to document it.

I could read and comprehend everything, but where my vision wasn't the best I had trouble reading so they thought i had an IEP until the teacher that was over it suggested I get my vision tested. lo and behold after i got glasses in didn't have reading issues anymore.

    With eye exams, are they always aiming to get 20/20 or higher, or do you simply aim for a certain spot? When switching through the discs in the eye thingie, once it reaches one type of spot. Once the person says yes, they usually stop. Wondering if all examiners go for a generalization, or if you simply know there is nothing more you can do with glasses alone. Thoughts and answers are much appreciated! Thanks.

  • @DoctorEyeHealth

    @DoctorEyeHealth

    4 жыл бұрын

    Great question Michael. We do aim to get at least 20/20. IF a person cannot read 20/20 with optical correction alone, we search for a medical reason why (cataracts, retinal disease, corneal disease, neurological problems etc). During the refraction process, it is best to not "overprescribe" so it is generally accepted to give the least amount of minus power needed to read the 20/20 line. However, that is a bit of an oversimplification. There are several endpoints to be considered with a final prescription.

    I worked with a guy who could read the street names from Google maps on a PC monitor from about 11 feet away. Here I am, no more than 11 inches away and I have trouble. My doctors use a projector for the eye chart. It makes it hard for me to see due to distorted vision from a creased retina, and shimmering spots probably from a laser procedure that was performed to close up bleeding blood vessels. I also have light sensitivity and the bright background washes out the letters. It's like when you watch a video of a car coming out of a tunnel. When they just exit the tunnel, the image goes almost all white until the camera corrects the exposure. I told them this and asked if they have an "old school" chart. They said they don't use those anymore. No wonder they can't narrow down a decent prescription for my glasses.

    The legal standard DMV is 20/70, and 20/40. Always personally exceed them at home on your Snellen. Please. The normal eye moves negative, when you place a minus lens on it. (Pure Science). Great care must be used before a minus lens is used on a child. Prevention is possible in that range.

    20/20 means you can see stuff from 20 feet in front of you that’s is less then 20 feet tall also means that anything bigger then the shapes or letters shown at the top will be harder to see
