🇮🇳 What Indians think about the Russo-Ukrainian War?

India is the most populated country in the world and therefore it matters a lot what does this county stand for in regards to the global event on our planet. In terms of Russo-Ukrainian War India stay somehow neutral. So, in this video I am examining what regular Indians think about Ukraine, Russia and the world in general.

Historically Ukraine was against India, helped Pakistan, condemned India in every event. When India asked Ukraine not to arm Pakistan they didn't listen. But Russia always there. So majority of Indians take Russian side.

As an Indian, let me point out that all parties involved in this war bear responsibility for it. This includes Russia, Ukraine and of course the US-led NATO - and none of them is a saint. Contrary to the popular belief, the conflict didn't start in 2022 but in 2014. The real trigger was the 2008 Bucharest Summit, where Bush administration announced that Ukraine would eventually join NATO. Putin has consistently warned that Ukraine joining NATO and the deployment of NATO forces on Ukrainian soil would be seen as a security threat due to the extensive border Russia shares with Ukraine. In fact, several leaders of NATO member countries itself, like Germany's Merkel and France's Sarkozy, opposed the US decision to offer Ukraine NATO membership because they were concerned it would provoke Russia and bring instability to the region. They argued that the US shouldn't push NATO boundaries eastward anymore (as they have already included many Warsaw Pact countries in NATO) and that Russia could see this as a threat if they now included Ukraine even after repeated warnings from the Kremlin. But it is the neocons sitting in Washington who sidelined all the advice given by the leaders of their own allied countries (whom they regard as subordinates and not as equals anyway) and continued pushing for Ukraine's NATO membership aggressively. Even after this when the Ukrainian president Yanukovych pursued a more balanced foreign policy, the US led forces staged a coup and overthrew him (a legitimately elected President) with the help of the Ukrainian opposition in 2014. Ukraine could have remained neutral, and could have used its neutrality as a leverage and benefitted from economic ties with both Russia and the West. Also had they treated their Russian-speaking minorities in Eastern Ukraine better, this conflict might not have escalated into something so big. Instead, Ukraine got manipulated by the US, whose only aim was to gain geopolitical influence in the region under the guise of spreading "democracy." Russia, on the other hand, should not have exploited the separatist uprising in Eastern Ukraine. Rather than arming them heavily, Russia could have used diplomatic means to protect the pro Russian separatists from the Ukrainian Armed Forces (if Putin genuinely cared about the East Ukrainian Russian-speaking minorities). Then there was the failure of the Minsk Agreements, where Ukraine, the East Ukrainian separatists, and Russia all failed to comply with the provisions outlined in the agreements. All parties are responsible for not adhering to this peace deal, which could have ended the bloodshed long ago. Also Putin could have addressed his security concerns about NATO expansion more diplomatically. However, it’s uncertain if that would have worked since Russia had been warning about security issues from the beginning, but the US still continued to aggressively push its agenda in Ukraine. Don't tell me the US or other powers wouldn't have acted similarly like Russia. Anyone who disagrees should read the "Monroe Doctrine," which is a cornerstone of America's foreign policy. It states that - "Any attempts by foreign powers to colonize land or interfere with states in North or South America would be viewed as acts of aggression requiring U.S. intervention and would be considered a threat to the peace and security of the Americas." By doing so the US ensured that NO POWER could establish a dominant presence near its borders, thereby US secured its own sphere of influence in the western hemisphere, I repeat "by the use of this doctrine the US has been securing its influence IN THE ENTIRE WESTERN HEMISPHERE OF THE PLANET". This was also evident during the Cuban Missile Crisis when the Soviets installed missiles in Cuba, right next to the US mainland. The US forces immediately implemented naval blockade of Cuba and also prepared for a full-scale invasion of Cuba in response. In my view, I dont want this war and bloodshed to continue but I don't support any party and hold all parties involved responsible for this conflict. Even now they are continuing to escalate the conflict and are not willing to engage in diplomatic talks. Just last week, the US and NATO organized a "peace" summit without even inviting Russia, one of the major players in this conflict. What kind of a gimmick was that? How unprofessional! I lost interest and didn’t follow the news about that meeting. They can't set aside their egos to sit together and make a deal. If this persists, then I have no doubt that this conflict will continue like the indefinite wars in Syria or Gaza, as the Militrary Industrial Complex in the US is also making good profit from this war. That’s why several UN member countries, like Brazil, India, and even the US regional ally Mexico etc., are maintaining a completely neutral stance in this conflict and asking the parties involved in this war to engage in diplomatic talks, which is the only way to end the bloodshed. The neutral countries are well aware of the political games being played by all parties involved and understand that no one is a saint here.

As an Indian, Here is a straight face answer: 1) None of of us support war. Even when some are pro Ukraine or Pro Russia. 2) Yes, we trust Russia a lot. Why? On multiple occasions in our history before and after independence Russia has proven a trustworthy partner from wars to economy to UN and more. More in comparison to Ukraine and West. 3) I believe Ukraine could have avoided this war if you guys had probably given strong statements on your independent decision. You could have taken the stance of Switzerland 🇨🇭 ans be very vocal on the issues of Russia and EU. 3) Every country looks at its interests, Moral values are prioritised only when our National Interests are not hurt. Take the example of Myanmar (A state unfortunately going through a long Civil war). We can send our military at the cost of our soldiers and probably bring the end of this war by defeating the Junta and letting people bring back their own government. Why dont we do that? Bcuz its not in our interests to cause harm to our people and get into drama of Military crime and UNSC drama as we are more focused on our economy and well being of our people. 4) You guys complain about oil and weapons and what not. Did your country take a moral stance when Serbia was invaded by your allies who provide you weapons? Did your countries condemn the action of US when they attacked Iraq or Algeria on reason of WMD weapons or oil? How come you guys are buying so much oil from us when we dont even produce the amount of Oil you guys are buying in a month? When you in-fact know its Russian oil. Point being: Dont complain about Moral stance or anything when you guys yourself are keeping your interest above and putting a fake face or morality. Get out of the mindset that when bad things happen to you, world should stand against you. Ukraine has not been a trustworthy partner after the desolation of USSR, And you the West have not shown your moral values when things happened in Iraq, Algeria, Sudan, Myanmar, Yemen, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Somalia, Congo and many more.

I am from Poland. I have been in India a few times, and one interesting thing I noticed when talking with people is that most people didn't really know the basic geography of Central Europe. Several people simply thought that I'm from the UK because they just assume that people with white skin are from the UK since India was colonized by the British empire. Even several educated people with advanced degrees mentioned that they assumed that people in Poland primarily speak English. In India, many people speak English in business settings and at large corporations, but they speak one of dozens of regional languages with their families and around their towns. Many educated people might speak a regional language, such as Tamil or Gujarati, Hindi and also English. I think some of these people assume that English is a similarly dominant language in Poland and that Polish might be a language spoken in villages or only in homes. It was interesting to hear this. I understand why some people might assume this, but those people simply don't know much about Europe. Obviously Poland was never a British colony, it's very far from India, and it makes sense that people in India don't know much about Poland or Austria or Finland, etc. The Soviet Union traded extensively with India, and it became a major supplier of weapons systems for India. After the Soviet Union dissolved, India continued to procure weapons systems from Russia, and their military is now highly dependent on weapons systems of Russian origin. There are weapons manufacturers in India that continue to produce weapons systems together with companies in Russia. Read, for example about the BrahMos missile project, which is a joint Indian and Russia project to produce cruise missiles. To-date, I have not read about these being used by the Russian VKS, but Russia has expressed some interest in potentially procuring various BrahMos missiles in the future, and these could be used to bomb Ukraine. Hopefully India will not sell these to Russia and hopefully the EU, the USA and Canada would threaten India with heavy sanctions if India were to start supplying missiles to Russia. Otherwise, India continues to import oil from Russia, and I read recently that Russia is planning to export coal via rail and ship through Iran to ultimately supply India. I find it disappointing that a country that was occupied and colonized for hundreds of years is openly cooperating both economically and militarily with imperialist Russia, but that's the reality. I've read some articles in some Indian English-language media publications about Ukraine, and they are ABSOLUTELY FULL of Russian propaganda. The Wall Street Journal ran an interesting article a few months ago about job recruiters in India who collaborate with the Russian military to offer poor people in India laborer jobs in Russia, but when the people get to Russia, they are forcibly conscripted into the Russian military and sent to Ukraine. The WSJ article mentioned some specific KZread channels used in these recruiting efforts, and I found the KZread channels and watched some videos in which they offer people in India high wages to go work "in industry" in Russia. People may or may not know that Russia is running similar recruiting efforts in Sri Lanka, in Nepal, in Cuba, in Venezuela, in Colombia, and in various countries in Africa to offer people high paying jobs in Russia but then forcibly conscript them into the Russian army and send them on meat-wave assaults to Ukraine.

Hello, I am from germany. I think it best to stay neutral. Russian is a classical and historical society. @@Escape_The_Mundane Correct -- Polish is a slavic language like Russian. I studied Russian at university, and I understand the basics of the language. That is why I can watch Russian TV and understand it when Russian TV commentators as well as Dmitry Medvedev -- the current Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council -- say that Russia should drop nuclear weapons on Warsaw, Berlin, Paris, London, Washington DC and New York. I also understand when Russian TV commentators say that Russian soldiers should murder Ukrainian children and all Ukrainian civilians in occupied territories. And I understand when Medvedev talks about Russia conquering all lands west of Russia. Staying "neutral" while genocide is committed against Ukrainians, the Russian army occupies all of Ukraine, and then the Russian army advances westward and continues to regenerate forces would be both unconscionable and absolutely foolish. It is unfortunate that England, France and the USA stayed neutral when Hitler's army occupied Czechoslovakia, but I am certainly glad that they didn't stay neutral after the Germany army invaded Poland. I am only alive because England and the USA did NOT stay neutral and my grandfather was eventually liberated from a German prison forced-labor camp. Had this not happened, I would never have been born. And this is why I support Ukraine today and hope that the thousands of Ukrainians held in forced detention by the Russian state are eventually liberated and that the Russian army is driven out of Ukraine so Ukraine's towns and cities stop being destroyed by the Russian army.

@clutteredchicagogarage2720 You're a smart person and hit the nail on the head. People who know and understand how and why putinist Russia acts and what their state-directed propagandists say knows very well that "neutral" position is by deafault helping Kremlin's efforts of recolonising the wannabe Russian empire. Any democratic "western" country appeasing Kremlin and repeating their narratives are taking a side against itself and all democratic systems in general. This is especially important as Kremlin's hybrid-war against all of the latter ramps up, which includes largest covert psyop operations in history, surpassing that of Goebbels office. You'll see voices of undetermined origins and funding getting louder and more numerous repeating all of Kremlins talking points from all possible angles this and next year. Tempting with simple, ignorant "neutrality" is one of those talking points, whose proponents are mostly covertly supporting Russia for incentives and will plead for those who don't care or are scaremongered into sppeasement to join them. Don't fall into this trap. When war is over and multiprong attacks on democracy and "western" values is over (along with Kremlin's mafia rule), you'll have time to become neutral or even russophile without becoming an enemy within.

Zelensky signed a peace deal with the breakaway regions that included their peaceful reunification with Ukraine, demanding Russia to act as their security guarantor. Poland, Germany, and France acted as guarantors on the part of Ukraine that it would not continue to annex regions using military force. (As Merkel later admitted, they did not plan to comply with the agreement and Ukraine simply needed time to receive Western weapons and prepare for a new civil war). It would be foolish to expect a different reaction when Zelensky demanded Putin’s participation in signing the agreement, only to spit in his face publicly and to show the world that Russia, which acted as a guarantor of security, is too weak to ensure its obligations to its allies under the treaty.

China already did that in 1951 Tibet one whole country(twice the size of Ukraine) and 1959 a part of India(roughly 60% size of EU) known as aksai-chin. Tibet is 2.5 million km2 and one complete country, Aksai-Chin is 38,000 sq. km there is still trouble in all the expansion China has done and it is shopping for more. The west says Chinese are the enemy, but traded and made them more powerful till they've became a challenger to their power dominance, now they're scrambling to keep China just in check. Always expanding China, India's neighbour, still calling for more expansion, into Taiwan, will the West now stop buying XYZ and condemn China? Since it thinks that is the solution for its currently similar but arguably smaller annexation problem, great it'll be 70 years too late and too little for the current size of the problem. India has fought four wars with Islamic Pakistan (1948, 1965, 1971 and 1999) and one war with Communist China in 1962. India has been facing several armed insurgencies funded, trained and politically supported by the above two countries, as well as US , Canada and UK, since the last four decades, which continues to this day. This has resulted in India to invest in a disproportionately large military. Close to 5% of India's annual budget is kept aside for military, and the local state governments keep aside considerable amount in police forces to tackle terrorism in the name of insurgency. This has caused immense setback in India's development, and Indian people's attempts to come out of poverty. No European country or United States has ever helped India to tackle these. In fact the US has only kept on supporting Pakistan and other forces trying to break apart India. The only country which has ever given political and military support to India was the ex-Soviet Union. Hence, ever since the formation of the modern Russian federation which inherited most of Soviet military and space technology, India has continued the co-operation with Russia for defense, nuclear and space technology needs. Hence, Russia is a strategic partner of India, and Indians and Russians have deep understanding to each other and mutual political support. On the other hand, the various governments who ruled Ukraine has always supported Islamic Pakistan only. Hence it is foolish to expect India to support Ukraine by any significant means. Of course, individual citizens may have diverse opinions and sympathy towards the innocent people of Ukraine, who are suffering due to their shameless politicians succumbing to western pressure and instigating and fighting a war against Russian speakers. Very soon you will see Georgians too fighting Russia, and your European media will say that evil Putin has attacked Georgia as well. Indians are generally peaceful. Law and order is much better in India, except for corruption and scams. Even during the centuries of colonization under Islamists as well as Europeans, India remained relatively peaceful. Even the famines did not make Indians take up arms. So do not expect India to take sides in far away wars. There are even people in India who wants to have peace with Pakistan and China.

If people don’t understand why common Indians support Russia, you must go read about the 1971 war and the formation of Bangladesh. Europe have always seen India under their colonialist and superior mindset. USA used to support and fund Pakistan and their many terrorist organisations. Even Ukraine used to provide weapons and supported Pakistan. After the successful Nuclear test by India, western nations imposed a lot of tariffs and restrictions on India. But through all of this, there was only one time tested friendship for India, and that was USSR and later Russia. So people who learned these history would obviously support Russia if asked to. But as a pacifist and religious people no Indian would want a war anywhere.

Traveling around India and asking common people their opinion on the Russia-Ukraine conflict will not amount to much. Geopolitics is complex and common poeple are not aware of what is really at play. Fortunately because of the internet we Indians are not uninformed anymore, and the western media "narratives" dont influence us unlike the past. We Indians know exactly what the war in Ukraine is really about. Nato expansion and the west trying to keep its dominance. It was unwise for Ukraine to try joining Nato. We should learn from history. Self determination is important for every country, BUT this unfortunately isn't applicable to countries who are neighbors to nuclear superpowers ( America and Russia) We should learn from the Cuban missile crisis. Nice try though!😉

You won't find any Indian locally much knowledge about Russia- Ukraine. You will get to know from social media. And tbh, we Indians support Russia. And govt stays neutral. Due to historical ties, having 60prcnt of arms and weapons, jets. India is not a stupid country like Ukraine. Which could have chosen to be neutral rather than siding with USA and being a puppet and stooge. Didn't you guys learn from Crimea?? There are countries which shares border with Russia. Why Russia attacked Ukraine!? Don't you think about it?? Why Russia dared Finland which in history never did that?? Use 🧠 before crying of democracy and all. Geopolitics doesn't work like that. Why there was no humanity cries for people of Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq??? In reality, whole EU will suffer cuz of USA. USA doesn't have much to loose. Geographically they are far from Russia. And has no enemy neighbours. This comment would be long. I would have given you example. But if you are biased then nothing we can do.

Hello Orest, I have been following your vlog posts for a year now. I am a Kolkatan and appreciate your taking time to visit my hometown and meet people. What is a matter of slight concern is that you seem to be choosing less educated people from weaker sections of society. You seem to have met absolutely no one who speaks English despite ten percent of India being able to speak in English. Your interviews and you yourself seem to be based in the poorer section of Park Street and Mullick Bazar intersection. Why did you not go further down Park Street, Rawdon and Loudon Street and meet English speakers who read and follow global news. I suggest that you take the effort to go to St Xaviers College and Calcutta University and some of the many coffee shops and meet younger people who have a more exposed world view. Right now, it looks like I could fly to Ukraine and travel to the Kyivien suburbs or the fifth largest city and ask people to comment on Indo Bangladesh affairs and the Rohingya refugee crisis and they just might not know anything too. I have lived in Russia, Georgia and Poland in that order and I am certainly not the biggest fan of the Russian state and their polity but that still doesn't mean that India must march to the NATO beat just because it is convenient for them now. BTW, I once considered buying a summer home in Kiev Oblast or Odessa but was surprised to find a Ukrainian lawyer stated that the Ukraine has listed India as a unfriendly country and deterred me from moving forward with that plan. I wish your country and the Ukrainian people a speedy road to peace, recovery and reconstruction as war is never a solution to disagreements or a misunderstanding. God bless and comfort Ukraine.

@@karensayer3089 Aww Karen, that is just not true! Please live in the real world where distinctions and differences do exist. I know my city and people way better than you will ever hope to know. I sincerely think Orest could have worked a bit harder to interview more globally exposed sections of our society for a more inclusive representation of our political views. Granted that he is a foreigner and might not have had enough local cultural knowledge, time or contacts. It is a great tragedy and travesty of justice that two Indians were killed in the Russo Ukraine war. This has nothing to do with the Modi government. It has more to do with unemployment and ignorance so common in many sections of our society. Unscrupulous agents lure young Indian men to travel to Russia to work in factories and then force them to become soldiers with minimal training. The Indian government has already ensured that all such Indians were repatriated to India. Today, the Russians were explicitly told not to recruit Indians for military activities abroad as it will sour our diplomatic relationship. Mind you I didn’t vote for the Modi government this time , in case you brand me as Modi minion. Indian society generally doesn’t trust the West as it has long history of hypocrisy and double standards. The West has to work harder to bridge that trust deficit.

I think it's done intentionally - poorer and less educated people usually make majority and integral part of the society. Also less educated people in fact better feel social trends, and media messages (although not completely understanding) without "distorting" them by education, concepts, paradigms. FYI Ukraine didn't officially list India as an unfriendly country, so that lawyer must have been lying. If by saying "march NATO beat" you mean voting in the UN for the resolution about common sense and common values, and agreements (UN's resolution to condemn ruZZian aggression), that would be closer to wrong. Still we are optimistic about Ukraine-Indian relations, because we have much more in common in sense of values, than India and ruZZia, or even India and communist China. It's just complicated now by ruZZian money, but they will exhaust eventually.

A lot is basic English but then out of nowhere, 1 will just throw in a word like autocrat, and the other just stares blankly as that's not an English term they have heard. 😂 Fair play to everyone who isn't English who can speak and understand our language as it's literally just a mega mashup of the multiple European languages. Keep doing what you're doing. Slava Ukraine.

An Indian here .....i saw a lot of comments about Indians, Indian(media) often openly support Russia ...... people here also commented Indians are insensitive about it.......let me tell you guy's we Indian's have rock solid reason to support Russia.....our ties are historic and as old when Ukraine was not even a country(part of ussr) Russia has been our time tested friend and proved it on many occasions let me tell you some points why we support Russia...... 1) Our relationship are as old since the formation of our country (1947) 2) Russia supported us in many sectors from agriculture to defence to space etc. when the west was busy to arm then military dictatorship Pakistan against India as they wanted to balance the power of India in the region and saw Pakistan as their Ally in the region 3) We have fought 3 war with Pakistan and countless skirmishes as they push terr@ri@sts in our kashmir territory (which is a disputed territory btw India and Pakistan of which a big part is under Pakistans illegal control ) and Ukraine has supported Pakistan on countless occassion in UN for the kashmir issue dispite Indian objections. 4) Ukraine has been a big military hardware supplier to the military of Pakistan which is again used against India and Indian army and as usual dispite the Indian objections Ukraine continued to do so ignoring our concerns. 5) Ukraine has been a big supporter of Pakistan in UN dispite knowing they stand on the wrong side as the UN charter says the Pakistani side is to withdraw it's army first from the disputed territory kashmir but they don't and still west including ukraine closes their eyes on this. 6) Recently your minister cracked jokes on the level intellectual mindset of Indians and Chinese ......and not only that a government Twitter handle tweeted a absurd and wrong depection image of our goddess kali which was intended make fun of us later deleted it upon criticism There are much more points why we don't support ukraine but above-mentioned points are quite enough to give you an idea why we don't support Ukraine . Now let me tell you why we support Russia 1) Since independence we got two hostile neighbours (China, Pakistan) and while west supported Pakistan despite knowing what they are doing in Kashmir....but Russia did support us in various sectors 2) During India pak war in 1971 for liberation of Bangladesh US and UK were on Pakistani side and even sent an whole naval fleet to attack Indian forces to support Pakistan we were left alone and no one to rescue but Russia came forward with it's nuclear submarines and fend of the US and UK and we liberated bangaladesh from Pakistani genocide. 3) Russia supported us in our nuclear program and also in our space program when the west didn't want to share their technology with us Russia did.... 4) When West imposed sanctions on us for getting nuclear weapons (which were just obtained as a deterrence because of our hostile neighbours) Russia became our Voice in UN being a permanent member and raised voice on behalf of us. 5) When west didn't provide us weapons and intelligence during the wars against Pakistan which was not initiated from our side Russia and Israel supported us with weapons while west was arming Pakistan knowing well that the weapon will get used against India and with the help of Russia and Israel we won the war. 6) Russia never does moral Policing to us unlike west does with their so called liberal media..... Russia never interferes in our internal matters unlike the west as they comment on every single incident in India as like it's their country or we are their colony...... there is a sense of mutual respect in Russia India relationship. I hope i gave you all a rough idea why we back russia...... nothing against Ukraine but russia is our time tested friend and we value that a lot........❤ Sorry for my English as it's not my mother tongue......may peace prevail 🙏
