Humans eat a lot of stuff that're toxic to animals or that are created to intentionally make the experiences not enjoyable, so it's not all that out of left field, though that's because humans themselves are pretty out of left field when it comes to what they eat

Fun fact about Fugu (eating puffer fish) Not only do you have to remove the bones, organs and skin of the puffer fish without puncturing the organs (spilling excess toxin on the flesh) But you also wash the flesh many many times in cold clean water to remove any possibility of contamination (and flavor ironically), leaving behind a very bland but fresh tasting piece of white fish that has a good texture, but no flavor to really write home about except every so often it may give you a small "tingle" as some of the toxin remains, making your lips or such tingle a bit. Also it is illegal to throw the bones, skin, organs or such of the fish in the trash, as the chef / restaurant is liable if a homeless man digs into a dumpster and eats the fish, so they usually use a special biohazard disposal container with a lock to prevent any hungry people or animals or criminals (who may try to use the toxin as a poison), for throwing it away. Lots of other little interesting things about it, but I think that is all for now. Was watching the video, and the entire time I was wondering if he was going to forget about the fact that people eat it xD

The chefs who wanted to serve Fugu must also undergo a certification process where they will be judged on how well they prepare the Fugu without contamination. The process is very very strict with only 50 out of 500 applicants passing every year

Fun fact, more people in Japan die from eating bad oysters than fugu (puffer fish). The license you need to be able to serve the fish requires you to know all varieties of puffer, all their poisonous bits, and how to carve them out. It usually takes 2/3 years before chefs training for the exam actually take it.

In the 1950s, my grandfather traveled to Japan on a business trip (he was an attorney for a mining company that was to sell copper for the nation’s postwar recovery). At some point, he found himself in a Japanese restaurant, and-not actually knowing Japanese himself- ordered a random dish from the menu. He received an odd sort of fish that he found he enjoyed. Then, on his right, a Japanese colleague of his turned, noticed what he was eating, smiled darkly, and asked: “do your ears tingle?” “What?” Replied my grandfather, unable to make sense of the question. “Do you ears tingle?” Repeated his colleague. “No?” “That’s good. What you are eating is Fugu fish- it’s poisonous if prepared incorrectly. If our chef wasn’t careful to cut out its poisonous parts, then you will die. You know you’re eating poisoned Fugu if your ears tingle.” Happily, my grandpa’s ears never tingled.

Would also be important to mention that: 1. A chef goes through years of training to be able to serve the fish without the toxins, and don’t quote me on this but I’m pretty sure they also need a permit from the Japanese government to serve it 2. The people that die from eating the dish itself are buying it illegally, as those chefs are not as properly trained as the legal ones and thus can charge way less for it, but also risking the tiniest bit of toxin to get on the rest, and there’s a lawsuit and jail time for the chef. 3. The amount of people that die from it are always in the single digits, likely because most people eat Fugu that has been prepared by someone capable of doing so, and the few that don’t are cut from the census. Anyways, love your vids but just wanted to point this out!

I love culinary history and fugu is one of my favorite topics. A few fun facts about fugu: *One of Japans supreme war lords Toyotomi Hideyoshi banned the eating of blowfish because as they were preparing to invade the Korean Peninsula a number of his troops ate fugu and died. People still ate it in private but It wasn’t until japans first prime minister Ito Hirobumi who when visiting a local restaurant was given this dish. There was a storm the night before and the fisherman caught nothing and the chef could only offer him one thing . . . The forbidden guppy (lol) he tried it and was astonished by the flavor a year later the ban was lifted. *When preparing fugu you must have a special license and when disemboweling the poisonous parts they must be locked in a special container so none may use it for criminal use. * Japan is currently working on breeding a non poisonous blow fish as blowfish are not actually born with the poison they get it through eating starfish and certain small sea shells 🐚

Better not drink outta tin cans in the summer then. Neighbors kid died because of a wasp that managed to get lost in the can and stung the inside of his throat on the way down causing swelling at a point that you couldn't make an emergency incision to create a hole to breathe through. They rushed him to the hospital but they couldn't save him in time. Moral of the story: anything could potentially murk you but it's not worth worrying about all those small odds because you simply can't avoid all of them. Course there is no reason to deliberately thread the needle but sometimes taking risks makes life more enjoyable. Especially since you will die one day regardless of how careful you were. Weird facts: -The reason why chefs present Fugu as a flower, it's supposed to look like a chrysanthemum. The same flower that is used in funerals. It's a dark joke. -Chefs have to properly dispose the organs of Fugu or else they can get into serious trouble. They can't just throw them into the trash either. In some cases, they either dry it or burn it. -Puffer fish were actually used to create "zombies". The toxin was mixed with another toxin and made into a digestive form. When taken, the person is placed into a death like coma. The problem with this is that you actually run the risk of paralyzing someone or killing them. -While there is no cure, there are treatments and it has to be done in the early stages. One of those treatments is using life support until the body removes the toxin itself. -puffer fish may actually be used in medicine one day. Some scientists may use the toxin in cancer treatment.

The Haitian Zombi ritual, I wondered if I'd see a comment about that. IIRC from anthropologist Wade Davis, or what I recall, the tetrodotoxin is used at just sub lethal amounts to make a person appear completely dead. After some time they (the bokor, or sorcerer performing the ritual) use something to counter the effects, or perhaps wait until it wears off, and then use Datura or a similar Belladonna plant extract to keep the "risen zombi" in a highly confused, sedated and very suggestible state for days or weeks. Also possibly brain damage from hypoxia when nearly paralyzed to death. Kind of a really clever stage illusion (it's a very performative ritual from what I've read), but really damn dangerous and with grim results. It was definitely a punishment to become a zombi. If you lived, well, you'd have no agency but also wouldn't really know it. Basically chemical slavery/shut down of higher cognition. It's pretty dark. What blows my mind is that they figured out how to do that. That's kind of more insane than figuring out how to eat it safely.

The one disapointing part about toxic animals like this is theres no antidote you could take to cure or even slow down the pain the only option you would have is to try to live long enough to atleast wish your loved ones a farewell while the toxins are shutting you down its like hitting the big red shutdown button inside your body

I always find it funny thinking about how many humans had to die during the "trial and error" periods of poisonous foods before they figured out how they could eat it safely. Imagine someone discovers something that looks edible and brings it to a group of people like "hey guys I found something that looks like food, let's eat", then they eat and die, but one spectator that remained alive says to himself "let's try that again"

I’ve had this dish before, it’s quite good and unlike anything else. There’s actually trace amount of the toxin left in the dish when prepared safely so it does give you mouth kind of a paralyzed numbness (not enough to make you drool like when you eat it unprepared of course) it’s a unique sensation and flavor profile that similar to how spicy foods feel but distinct enough so that you’d never confuse the two. I’d compare it to how your mouth feels after going to the dentist and the Novocain is wearing off but just enough to stay noticeable. It’s quite nice actually

My face when my dumbass had it at a restaurant as treat for myself on a very lonely birthday. As I’m enjoying my rather delicious meal I notice a few of the staff staring and chatting quite obviously about me, giving no f$&@ of course because I’m American I continue to enjoy, then the chef walks up and asks me how I’m enjoying my meal. “It’s pretty good actually, think I might make this my annual birthday dinner lol.” “I’m just surprised to see you eating it so readily, not many people order this dish because of its potential lethality.” “It’s wut!?….😳…” “Yea, blowfish is a delicacy and very tasty, but if even the slightest mistake is made while preparing it, eating it is fatal.” “Oh…. That’s lovely…” “You didn’t know!???.” “No….” I then finished said meal because by the time this conversation happened I was almost done eating anyway and this wouldn’t have served as much of a warning at that point…
