    6:04 in Portugal's case, the fascist government only fell because of the military. They were tired of being sent to fruitless wars to keep African lands, especially Angola. As we saw previously, most of Africa was still under Europe's colonization and, while Angola is shown as Angola, its capital is not Luanda, but Nova Lisboa (New Lisbon), which might mean that the Angolan forces were subdued and there was no reason for the Portuguese military to go ahead with a coup.

    1:49 that's right and there's even more. According to the Treaty of Sevres (1920), Ottoman territories were roughly divided as such; Greece received Smyrna in İzmir and Thrace, France received Syria, southeastern and east-central Anatolia, Italy received large parts of southern and west-central Anatolia, Independent Kurdish and Armanian states in the eastern Anatolia, British had mandate of Iraq, Palestine, and Cyprus, And an international zone surrounding the Marmara Sea. So there was just left northern and north-central Anatolia for the Ottomans. Then the Independence War happens and we have the current turkish borders (not exactly tho but close enough).

    I think that cameroon would have independence more easily than the others , I am Cameroonian born in Italy. the Germans did not have a very stable control over Cameroon already with the battle between the Bakweri (a tribe) against the German army, with the victory of the first, and because in Germany, since they treated the native Cameroonians so badly , they had to make reforms in 1907

    I would say it would be because Namibia has around 2,5 million people (0,6 million in 1960). So if Germany sent there some settlers they could gain majority and keep it even if there was some kind of referendum. While population of Cameroon is above 25 million (5,1 million in 1960) and Tanzania 58 million (10 million in 1960).

  • @Betterhose

    @Betterhose

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@stafer3 That could be a possible explanation, but I don't think that it is an important factor. I'll explain why I think so: -Ever since 1860s, Germany was Europe's most populated country (especially in its 1914 borders). Britain and France somehow managed to hold onto their colonies despite having a smaller population. -The decolonization in our timeline was a consequence of both world wars. The Europeans colonial powers were weakened to a point that they couldn't project their power across the globe anymore. Without the distraction through rivaling powers, the war(s) and the accompanying loss of life and destruction, the three major European powers would have developed exponentially. If anything, their grip on their colonies would have strengthened. And let's not forget that there would have never been the rise of communism and proxi-wars associated with independence movements and the cold war. -A colonial power doesn't need numerical superiority to stay in control. They gained control by applying force (specifically by multiplying their force through technological superiority like rifles, machine guns or canons). Besides, colonial rule is not necessarily a bad thing for the colony itself. A colonial power has an interest in the infrastructural and economic development of the colony and it brings foreign currency into the country.

    4:00, by the way, is a very well-developed map, even the names of the cities on it are the same as they were before the First World War. More precisely, cities in Russia. The fact is, if it were not for the First World War, then there would have been no revolution in the Russian Empire and the Communists would not have come to power and therefore would not have renamed many cities (for example Krasnodar ("krasn-" for "red"), which is on this map called Ekaterinodar)

    3:20 I feel like the deeper answer would be "technically yes, but not as we know it". Assuming Disney exists in this universe and assuming Japan isn't completely anti-US at any point, some people would have been influenced by Disney and create their own animations. WWII simply increased the potential market for anime due to the depression caused by Japan losing and being bombed by the US. In theory, some of the anime we have in this timeline would still have existed, there'd just be way less anime and it would be way less popular within Japan. Whether anime would become _internationally_ popular by the 21st Century and what it would look like at that point, who knows. But earlier 1920s-40s anime would definitely feel like a Japanese mix of Cuphead and Mickey Mouse, sorta.

    @@Isometrix116 I mean they are not the same thing, but thinking they are diametrically opposed concepts doesn't make much sense. Also, Cuba was pretty cool. Iran before the revolution I guess didn't call itself communist and they weren't, but they benefitted a lot from left policies until the US was all like: "Nah, son, you ain't doin' that on ma watch." And then there was Burkina Faso which was going pretty well until CIA and there is Bolivia, which is going good I think but I am not sure. Cuba is also still pretty good but the US is making it seem like they have a worse healthcare system than in the US, which is a pretty low bar. Anyways, I suppose you are somewhat right because some of these countries didn't call themselves communist/socialist specifically, but I felt the urge to go wall of text mode for some reason nonetheless.

    @@ardabaser1349 You went from communism to just general leftism lol. Im thinking USSR, China (before their Singapore-style reforms) etc. Authoritarian, one-party states. USSR-style communism is universally this and with a name that implies that it is Soviet-style, thinking "authoritarian" isn't too far-fetched. USSR communism and free and open democratic elections are opposing concepts though. Easily. Without debate.
