What If… the GTX 1080 Ti had competition?

Testing and comparing the AMD Radeon VII and Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 Ti in 20 games from 2015 - 2023 using a modern gaming PC.
Support Iceberg Tech: / icebergtech
The Radeon VII was a short-lived attempt at a flagship during a rough spot in AMD’s history; when it launched, it only managed to compete with Nvidia’s second tier card in raw performance, and lacked fancy new RT and hardware upscaling features. It perhaps compares more favourably to the old GTX 1080 Ti, a card for which AMD had no answer at the time.
In this video, I speculate what would have happened if - somehow - the VII had in fact launched to compete with the 1080 Ti back in 2017, and whether it would have put up a serious fight - or if the battle for the top was one that AMD wasn’t equipped to win, even if we let them cheat.

Radeon VII is an expensive data-center GPU (Instinct MI50) im disguise. 3.36 TFlops FP64 (actually 6.72 in hardware, but AMD locked it down in drivers); the 1080 Ti only does 0.34 TFlops FP64. And it has much faster VRAM at 1TB/s, although it could only handle ~750GB/s in practice. It was not competition for the 1080 Ti, but for the $7k Nvidia Tesla V100 16GB. Was a no-brainer to buy 10x Radeon VII instead of 1x V100 back in the day, for computational physics research.

I like the hypothetical approach presented. One thing I'm very curious about... how the framerates would be affected if you disable tessellation on the games tested (where available) on the Radeon VII and the 1080 TI. I remember tessellation being one of those settings that had to be disabled to keep consistent higher framerates achievable on the GCN cards I've owned. It might make an interesting video, investigating the performance differences with tessellation enabled/disabled comparisons on the GCN line. 🙂Love watching the older tech being experimented on. Keep up the awesome work Iceberg.

The GPU industry has fooled people into thinking that computer hardware and GPUs only last like 3-4 years. They don't. They often easily chug along for 4x+ that length of time. And often if they do slow down some quick cleaning, new thermal paste, etc will solve those issues.

  • @InvisibleSquids

I still daily drive a Radeon VII on an ultrawide monitor. Probably the only reason it's still alive is because my system is heavily CPU and RAM speed bottle-necked. Most games will run 100 FPS (freesync refresh rate of my monitor) with some graphics setting tuning. It's also worth noting that the thermal limit on the card is 110C, and unless you set an aggressive cooling curve in Adrenalin client, it will very quickly jump to that and sit there the entire time. I often find myself power and clock limiting it even with all the fans in my case (Corsair 4000X) at max speed. The three fans on the Radeon VII max out at just above 3800 RPM, and are super loud when they resonate... If I had less of a bottle-neck, I'd imagine I would have to keep a power limit on it all the time to keep it from boiling off the thermal paste

I don't see why it wouldn't?. It's not that much slower than the 1080ti and my 1080ti was running almost all my games maxed out at 1440p at decent fps (except for a few games hence why I upgraded). So the 1080 would be doing a lot better than my 1080ti was seeing as the difference between 1440p and 1080p is huge in terms of gpu power needed. (Just looked it up on google because I couldn't remember the exact number but here it is). According to google: 1440p monitors offer 78% more pixels than the Full HD option. So yeah it would definitely run almost everything at 1080p just fine except for the latest unoptimised messes that we've gotten in the last year or so if my 1080ti was running almost everything maxed out decently well at a resolution that takes almost 80% more power to run lol.@@michubern1444

The L1 cache of this Vega based GPU is only 16 kb versus the 48 kB of the 1080 Ti which is why it really struggles with the 1% and averages. The RX 5700 XT has less shaders less rops less TMU's but has a unified shader cache allowing direct access to 64 bit as it's L1. This is why RDNA is such a massive leap forward versus their Vega counterparts. Interesting seeing this play out in a what if scenario.

  • @Ivan-pr7ku

    @Ivan-pr7ku

It's highly doubtful a single hardware feature is responsible for the performance difference. AMD only increased the L1 size in RDNA3 to 32KB, so I'm not sure where did you come with the "unified shader cache" thing for RDNA1. Pascal was the last Nvidia architecture to use dedicated L1 texture case (48KB read-only) and was not latency optimized, since all read requests had to go through the texture units. GCN had other weak points, besides the software driver behavior, that unattended brought down the performance in many cases, as a result of poor VALU occupancy caused by a myriad of factors.

Second, radeon VII was 2years late of 1080ti so 7900xtx has caught up tremendously in current gen while a bit to catch up but can say it is competing well considering price. Biggest question mark, although much less relevant to games, is how Radeon VII is last consumer gpu so far with HBM memory and likely will stay that way for very long time.

Here is the Alternate Universe: Nvidia launches the GTX 1080 ($700), 1070 ($450), 1060+ ($300), 1050 ($110) back in 2016. AMD shortly after launches the Vega64 ($600), RX-590 ($350), RX-570 ($200), and RX-460 ($100) but with much better names. A year later in 2017, Nvidia expands with: GTX 1080Ti ($800), 1070Ti ($450), 1070 ($380), 1060- ($200), 1050Ti ($140). Whilst AMD responds with the Vega7 ($600), Vega64 ($500), Vega56 ($400), RX-590 ($300), RX-480 ($250), and RX-470 ($150). This keeps AMD competitive, and Nvidia nervous. Meaning they don't want to risk pulling that siht they did with the RTX-20 series. Maybe they still go for Ray-Path Tracing, and maybe prices go up, but the raw performance would also go up substantially. Meanwhile, AMD actually gets the drop on Nvidia this time. They acquire and partner with EVGA, and release the RDNA-1 series of cards before the Nvidia RTX-20 series. At the same time they introduce these newer, much improved driver support network. In the best timeline, the original Xbox is released with the AMD/ATi components. The US Government puts an embargo on Intel PCs, and fines them hundred million dollars. AMD is averted from bankruptcy, and the new funds from the console sector help funnel their R&D. They get to releasing Zen1 much much sooner, and same goes for RDNA-1 products. AMD goes from strength to strength, whilst Intel flounders in their incompetence. Just like Microsoft does. Eventually competition returns to the market, but this time it is an even playing field. Other innovations still happen, but they happen a bit differently and sooner. Overall it's the consumers who win here.

Radeon group had no clear leadership and went orthodox on the 7, Big chip, lots of power, and lots of memory bandwith by using the latest hardware technologies. nVidia did what nVidia does and raise the bar with their latest software technologies. AMD always was behind CUDA in performance per Watt amd with nVidia sticking to older process technologies eeking out FPS through driver implementation of all DX12 features, including DX12 Ultimate with the 20+ series. AMD has always suffered poor driver implementation. But they are getting much better at it now. If you plug in a decent RX580 8 GB now, with fast ddr4 dram. you will be astonished compared to how it was in 2018. I have also tried CrossfireX (2x16x)in the games that stll support it and it's a hair slower than an overclocked 2060 super.

Edit, when i talk about a cards class, i am talking about their manufacturing spec, such as their die size and memory bus, these things do not change between generations, there is always a minimum viable size of around 100mm, and always a maximum viable(consumer) size of around 600mm, with the 2080TI and Titan RTX being an outlier at 750mm like the enterprise Tesla series of cards often around 800mm (now called A100 and H100 dropping the tesla name) The competition for GTX 1080 didnt come until the 5700XT Both 250-350mm 60 class die and 256 bit 70 class bus Its just too bad the 5700XT was a generation and a half late AMD's only direct competitor to the ~300mm GTX 1080 was so bad that they didnt even launch it, instead only launched the ~500mm 80 class die with HBM2 Titan class memory bus on the Vega64, AMD didnt release a ~300mm 60 class card because this 500mm+ card and its cut down partner were so bad they couldnt properly compete with the ~300mm 60 class die GTX 1080 Oh, and AMD never launched a competitor to the 1080TI in the RX5000 series, with 60 class being their highest tier, not releasing a ~400mm 70 class, or ~500mm 80 class(like the 471mm 1080TI) However, if we had recieved a ~500mm RX 5900XT, the ~500mm 6900 would have been less compelling because the 6900 uses the same node, but gives up some of that ~500mm, for RT, and to function properly, an 80-100CU 5900XT would likely need a 384 bit memory bus, where as the 6900XT has only a 256 bit(remember, its not giving up die area to cache and RT so has more room for compute units). The 6900XT may still have excel at lower resolution thanks to the cache, but a theoretical 5900XT might have beat the 3090 in traditional raster at 4K

I recently for shits and giggles picked up a TITAN Xp and Radeon VII. I collect cards (albeit mostly pre-2013 stuff). The pair cost me around $400US. A bit of a spendy pickup, but a fair deal for it. Not bad as backup cards either compared to my Radeon RX6800.

I've been running the Radeon VII for almost a year now as a "temporary" card. Before this card, I owned the Titan Xp 12GB (fully enabled 1080Ti) which I sold and then was literally just a few clicks away from purchasing the Radeon 7900XTX. Since for some reason I enjoy weird cards, I thought I'd quickly try the VII (HBM2, 4096-bit, 1TB/s memory bandwidth, crazy) and I would say I quite like it. I had a change to pick one card from 5, so I picked the one which undervolts best. My card goes down to 0.95v under load and is rock solid stable, meanwhile the second-best undervolting card could not run 100% stable even at 1 volt, not to mention the other 3 cards. I repasted it with Arctic Silver MX-6 paste and now it's actually quiet under load, which is unheard of for the VIIs as they might be jet engines if not undervolted & repasted, or if you get a poor undervolting one. I'm not too much of a gamer, however, it runs Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1440p and High details pretty well I have to say. It sits vertically-mounted in the case and looks amazing (it is 10/10 in terms of physical condition, not a single scratch on it). My PC is quite old, 10-core Intel i7 6950X @ 4.2GHz, ASUS X99 Deluxe 2, 32GB RAM, 1TB 970 EVO Plus + 8TB 870 QVO SSDs, LG 27GP950 4K 144Hz screen and yes I know it's a bit of a waste of the monitor with this card. I said I would upgrade the whole system when the GTA6 for PC comes out, but yeah, this is still far far far faaar away.

Memory is the ultimate predictor of a card's longevity; that's why all vega cards are still decent, heck the 1060 would still be a decent used card like the rx570-580 8Gb had nVidia not made it 3/6GB and started their trend of selling already obsolete cards.
