Well the Stormtroopers aren't the army and the Dark Troopers while effective never made it past the prototype phase due to a combination of a bias towards organic soldiers thanks to the Clone Wars (who would adopt the tactics of the losing side of a war?) The Empire needed flagships because if they just cruisers they would have nothing to counter Mon Calamari Star Cruisers and Star Dreadnoughts would be important as they could launch attacks by themselves effectively. The TIE Defenders are great too but they are expensive too ten times the cost of the TIE they already had in service. Plus there is the fact the designer tried to overthrow Palpatine.

@@emberfist8347, the problem with that is the fact that the Imperial military DID in fact adopt the tactics of the losers. Overwhelming firepower from capital ships and swarms of cheap fighters, these are the tactics of the CIS. Except that the Imperials did these things less efficiently then the CIS. Granted Palpatine was trying to head off a galactic resession and needed to create jobs and people reliant on his Empire to sell the idea of the autocracy in the first place anyway. Furthermore it was the overbearing and inefficient policies of the Tarkin Doctrine that caused many to rebel in the first place. The Mon Cal Cruisers were originally designed for galactic exploration and commercial use not warfare. It was the ruthless exploitation of their world by the Empire that saw the Mon Calamari donate these vessel to the Rebellion. The Imperial military and most particularly the navy was designed to fight a large well equipped opponent like the CIS but after the Clone Wars, that wasn't the enemy they faced. They were up against small insurgent cells, underfunded and ill-equipped. It was only the Empire's inefficiencies that allowed these cells to grow into a force that could ever threaten the Empire on an existential level. A more effective force could have prevented this.

@@enoughothis The CIS was actually more about starfighters than capital ships while the Empire was the opposite. Also while I will excuse what happened at Mon Calamari, the Clones Wars had not one but two battles over the shipyards there so naturally you didn't want them to fall into enemy hands.

@@emberfist8347, obviously you don't want shipyards to fall into enemy hands, that's basic stuff. Where the could the CIS built big ships like the Lucrehulk and definitely the Malevolence. Although granted the CIS actually had a more well rounded navy in terms of classes of ships serving in it. This does not excuse the Empire from building Capital class vessels while fighting a scattered insurgency. In the real world Mainline Battle Tanks are worthless in fighting the various terrorist groups that exist, they are simply not fit for this purpose. Likewise Battleships aren't used to fight pirates in speedboats because it's just not practical or effective.

Alternate title “ what if thrawn was in charge instead of the emperor”

Also a good thing to note: the standard citizen would support the empire way more. A lot didn’t know how evil the empire was until the Death Star and that led to a massive funding and recruitment boost

The Galactic Empire kill my son

The entire Imperial Doctrine would change. It would go from quantity to quality. Each ship having a Dark Trooper platoon, every fleet supported by a large amount of support craft every hangar in the Imperial Navy with squads of TIE Defenders, Stormtroopers with Clone Trooper training and armour because it was actually good. The Empire would more or less rule forever until a powerplay kicks of for whatever reason.

Let's be honest, power plays will occur. All that would happen is that imperial commanders and leaders will simply turn these new weapons on each other. Also this wouldn't change the culture of imperial high command. Incompetence, corruption, and, resentment would still be very present. For every high ranking official like Thrawn, you would have more as cold and ruthless as Tarkin. (He does his job fine but he breeds resentment against him wherever he goes.) Or jealous/glory struck officials like Konstantine. Or stupid ones like Ozzel. Also remember, Vader is a sith apprentice. He'll want to over throw Palpatine one day. He might use military means to do it or if he does do it by a more subtle coup, then other officials loyal to Palpatine or themselves will try to take him out. Then there are the geo/social politics. Like the core vs the rim or humans and aliens. Simply put it, this empire will eventually tear itself apart.

That would be extremely expensive. The Empire already had a fair amount of support craft. Stromtrooper armor is actually better than Clone Armor when it comes surviving in different environments and they have Clone Trooper Training.

Power plays happen everywhere in Realality and human nature that is were discipline and morality comes the thought of risk, cause and affect. Sentient beings that joined the Empire, Must have had the same purpose or relative or goals to means to end. They are warriors and Police and idealist or support ideologies that need a job. Thats why they joined..... Vader wants to Rule the Empire not destroy it.

It does make a degree of sense. It based on a similar concept to what won WWII for the US. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki didn't themselves end the war but they did demonstrate that the US had the power to wipe Japan off the map and wasn't afraid to use it. With the Sword of Damocles hanging over their head, Japan signed a peace treaty.

@@Seangalanti The Empire didn’t use it on civilians as far as they defined them. From their logic if the government of a planet has aided and abetted the Rebellion everyone who lives there is fair game. They never used any superweapons on civilians by their logic. The Death was only used on 4 planets. Desparye which was a penal colony, Jedha the side of a major insurrection, Scarif which was under Rebel attack, and Alderaan whose Senator they got confirmed to be aiding the enemy.

As hopefully a future military historian saw this title and immediately ceased whatever the heck I was doing.

In a human-centric Empire, the troops were treated like robots and that was the biggest mistake imo. Stormtroopers were treated like expendable fodder & were told to disregard fallen allies. What makes our militaries so effective IRL is that they have comradery & are attached to each other, you know, what makes us human in the first place. The Rebels even treated their droids better than the Empire did their troops. And TFO repeats this mistake decades later. Hopefully in the next era, both major factions will be portrayed a little more realistically and villain's who lose because they were outplayed by smart strategies, not because of their own stupidity. Sorry if that was long.

To be fair, Stormtrooper armour isn't too bad, it could dissipate blaster hits along the entire surface, so the trooper inside wouldn't die. It was sealable against chemical and biological weapons, so troopers could fight on undeterred by terrain and other dangers. Problems with visibility stem from stolen armor.TIE Pilots are a much better example of expendable soldiers.

It does seem like every “bad guy” in SW always uses the zurg rush strategy; Separatists, imperials, and the first order. I think this is to give the impression that the good guys are facing slim odds, but in reality the bad guy defeats themselves through incompetence rendering that massive material advantage null.

If only they listen to Vader and Thrawn and didn't waste their resources on that damn Death Star...

@@welkingunther5417 The SSD is a great concept. They would be the flagships of their fleets. Nothing the Rebels had could counter it and it was cheaper than a Death Star. An Executor could launch attacks on its own and subjugate an entire system. If have one per sector group that would be great and it was Palpatine's plan.

@@emberfist8347 The Rebels couldn't counter it 1 on 1, no, but, as Endor and battles afterwards showed, a whole fleet, combined with superior fighters, can take them down.

The Empire can think strategy. It's just that petty power play got in the way and made it very difficult work together.

What if the empire funded civilian projects that actually helped people?

Could you imagine stormtroopers who were nearly on par in terms of training, skills and equipment as the clone army was. The civil war would have ended in under five years.

God, Operation Cinder. I remember a time when the Death Star was the worst idea the Empire ever had. Then Palpatine made the contingency: in the event I die with the Death Star, I'll burn my own cities to the ground, as opposed to the cities of the ones who killed me!

Stormtroopers were actually really effective at their role as well trained infantry and had decently high survivability. The Army Troopers were the actual cannon fodder as shown on Mimban in Solo. Yes the empire shouldn't have made the Death Stars, instead should've balance fleet compositions and train its officers to adapt to current threats. The Vehicles fielded by the empire were quite effective strike both fear and were useful in eliminating rebels

Translation: If the Empire didn't have Nepotism and actually Descent officers

An interesting corollary to this is the Pallaeon's (and others) reform of the Imperial Remnant where they had to spend limited resources smarter.

Star Wars Rethink: If Dooku had killed Anakin on Geonosis. In particular, what would Palpatine do in response to losing his prize future apprentice, both in regards to his plans and what he'd do with Dooku. Also, would he still replace Dooku, and if so then who and when? Plus, how might this impact the Clone Wars and the Jedi Purge (if at all)?

Tie phantoms could have become more common the ISB could have operated like the CIA like throwing off the mankala king in an up rising and the empires interference could have looked like the USA trying to fight monarchs and support democracy and the biggest change would be that the tie hunter would have replaced tie fighter and defenders could have acted like heavy interceptors could have found better navy ships like interdictors and clocked capital ships like small destroyers and firgates for the submarine role

The empire with its storm commandos, dark troopers, shadow troopers, death troopers, coruscant guard, 501st legion and so on and so on. It defiintely had the technology and the knowledge to improve its military until it became unstoppable. Locally this happens all over the galaxy, Szinj turned his stormtrooper corps into the Raptors, the crimson command was made, Thrawn's Defenders etc. It was just done at a lower level than high command as Palpatine kept draining resources for his vanity projects. The kicker with the superweapons? A fleet of star destroyers is enough to destroy a planetary civilization, there are even protocols for it. A Bellator is capable of doing it on its own and it was a small dreadnought, one of dozens. The Death Star is utterly pointless for anything but the emperor's personal ego.

Thrawn sounds like Admiral Yamamoto talking about the Yamato class battleships, Thrawn wants cruisers and smaller ships, Yamato wanted aircraft carriers, cruisers, and destroyers.

I understand and like this idea but being realistic the Empire could’ve kept the same stormtroopers and tie fighters however they could’ve made special task forcers equipped with superior weaponry and add ons such as the dark trooper droids and the tie defender. Having 1,000 squads of 3-5 tie defenders ready to deploy would make the empire lethal.

No it was Palpatine's overconfidence. He could have just not shown up to Endor and stay in his Palace while the Rebels fell for his trap. However, he wanted a front-row seat to the Rebellion's destruction and showed up in person with no plan for if he died there and no heir to his throne.

basically in order for the rebellion to win the empire had to be ridiculously stupid you'd think palpatine a man who had spent years basically playing 7d chess to destroy the Jedi would have been better at managing his empire

I agree completely with almost everything in here, except the fact that storm trooper training was rubbish and that storm troopers were only feared because they had the backing of the empire. Storm troopers were incredibly well trained and known for their marksmanship.

First comment and Like! Truthfully I think the Empire was just written around plot armor. I still approve of the Death Star. Let's be honest the Rebels wouldn't have gotten the plans if there wasn't insane plot armor. 1. Galen Erso wouldn't have been the lead researcher, but actually building it was stupid. You shot his wife and possibly killed his daughter. His work should have been meticulously studied so that flaws could be caught. Like you don't need a two meter wide exhaust port to vent exhaust, but just hundreds or thousands of exhaust vents to do the job. 2. Then the fact the rebels did any damage on Scarif? How did they even do the outfit change. Did no one see that a random enforcer droid came out of that ship even though one wasn't brought and why is the officer a completely different person? 3. The fact the Rebels even got anything out. How come two "Elite" Death Troopers had such a hard time shooting people dangling on data tubes? 4. Krenik monologuing? He should have shot or stunned Jyn and checked the signal tower. 5. You don't need to actually return the Death Star plans. Just blow up the ship where they were sent before anyone could launch instead of blowing up Scarif. The Empire has to be written poorly or it wouldn't make sense how the Rebels actually won. Also Thrawns ideas would have been phased in as time progressed. Slowly phasing out older fighters and ships, because the Tarkin Doctrine had some merits, but it's too extreme. Fighters won't become careless if they have shields. The style of training and rigorousness of it should always be the same, but actual fighters on the Battlefront should be top of the line where your fighters are so good that even if they didn't have shields they would dominate. We all know Imperial pilots are the best, but their tools were trash. Why would you train your pilots to the be the most elite, but give them WWII fighters and put them up against the modern F-22. Makes no sense yeah he's getting a ton of kills with it, but the casualties you are taking are too high for people with such skill. Like they should put their top pilots in Defenders and slowly make it to where everyone can have a defender. No need to get rid of old Tie Fighters just put droid brains in them so you can maximize your whole inventory. Technology in the Star Wars universe is so weird. They're so technologically advanced, but they seem to be written poorly. AI is extremely advanced, but not utilized to it's full potential. Like I understand having analog tech, because it has practicalities by keeping closed system intranets, but we know the Empire is technologically superior, but they fall to some really dumb stuff. Like how have they not made blasters where only DNA registered Imperial personnel can use them. The Empire is just written so the rebels have a way to win.

how to use resources more reliable step1: don not raplace Clone troopers with Stormtroopers

Storm troopers are more like cops than military as far as their intimidation ability. Most people will listen to them because it's the law, and most people are slightly intimidated when they see one, but a small group of dedicated dissidents can easily fight a half dozen stormtroopers

I don't consider the Disneyverse canon but the majority of your points and comments still apply even to the "Legends" canon imo, honestly I think the story would have been that much more interesting if the Empire were more intelligent and efficient.

The only downside I can think of is that there’ll be no moral winning victory. The destruction of Yavin would have been a easy imperial moral booster had they won but this would be more of a slow grind

I think the Empire could have lasted longer if they weren't so overbearing if they gave their citizens more autonomy and allowed a Free Market to help the galaxy's damaged economy after the Clone Wars the Rebel Alliance would have never been a thing. I'm a rebel till the end

first thing I would do is dramatically increase support to spec-ops units to deal with elusive rebel cells, pirates and other neer do wells. I take the best of the lot and train them to the same standards as Mondolorians. I would HIRE Mandalorians for this purpose. I would restart the Clonetrooper program and CIS droid foundries with updated models. these changes would dramatically improve the quality of frontline shock troops and allow the standard troops to most perform garrison duty while the Clones and Droids did the HEAVY fighting. Stormtroopers would be rehumanized as more than just walking targets (which makes it harder to simply kill them) and given proper training as an elite highly visible police force held to the HIGHEST discipline standards.

TIE Defenders, Hunters & Phantoms acting as elite squadrons while swarms of TIE Drones act as the necessary numbers.

Short answer: The Rebels would have been absolutely screwed

Well this video is amazing in terms of strategy but the only problem is I see with the dark trooper droids would be the back lash of the civilians because they just got done with a war with army's of battle droids from the clone wars and all the propaganda against droids so I don't know how the standard galactic civilian would think of the empire now using droids as soldier's as well

Star Wars Rethink: Imperial Civil War (before Palpatine's death, either before the rebellion or early in it). Maybe Vader is responsible and trying to take his master's place, or maybe Palpatine does something to turn Tarkin against him, or maybe the Moffs turn on him, or maybe there's a massive Stormtrooper mutiny because Palpatine decided to severely cut their pay or stop paying them or some other stupid Sith-like thing he does. Whatever the exact reason and those behind it, Palpatine has to fight enemies from within that aren't the Rebel Alliance.

I think one downside, at least for some, is that connections and wealth would mean far less than in the canon Empire. Some Imperial officers like Admiral Ozzel only got so far because of their family connections. In this timeline, with loads of veteran troops officers like him would be superfluous. This would be great for the Empire, but I'd imagine that there would be resistance from the rich and powerful, perhaps even throwing their lot in with the Rebellion, though this is far from probable.

This did happen in the EU in fact you saw phase II dark troopers quite often in Star Wars Galaxies. In the EU the X-Wing was also originally designed to replace the Tie Fighter but rebels stole the plans, deleted the backups and stole the prototypes. It just didn't happen in disney's canon sadly.

Basically: What if the Galactic Empire was as powerful as the Sith Empire

What I do enjoy with the Galactic Empire is its huge size and the precedence for local variety in terms of warships, troops and doctrines. I recently wrote an old Clone Wars admiral of old Anaxian heritage, naturally she gets the short end of the stick and they dump all the outdated equipment on her task force. So she ends up with a Secutor, half a dozen Dreadnaughts of various models and maybe a score of Peltas. TIE fighters sure, they are cheap and available everywhere, the vehicles however are old AT-TEs, AT-PTs, Juggernauts etc and the troops is her private army she brought into the war decades ago. It looks very different from a typical imperial fleet, and yet it is all equipment and ships that the empire makes use of.

Proves how forward thinking Thrawn really was

Its actually interesting how... individualistic the Sith helmed Galactic Empire was with its military finance

I'd keep the plastoid armor. While it's not the best form of armor, it does compensate this by being flexible and able to withstand some blasterbolt damage. Also , I would send some dark troopers as part of either a patrol unit or part of the law enforcement groups on the planet

In all honesty if the empire would have invested more in cruisers instead of massive star destroyers the rebels would have never had a chance

TBF, the reason for the superweapons was because palpatine knew of the far outsiders and that they were coming.

Thrawn if they empire was more strategic in this timeline would’ve probably survived. He would likely know of the Vong already and besides remember the Xyston classes built in only 3 decades? They can make like 1 in 5 years and still do the same thing as the Death Star but cheaper

I wonder the cost comparison in money, material and manpower lost between the death star being destroyed vs invading and occupying Alderaan. Does it wash out? That doesn’t really work out as good with the second death star since it was never able to be used except against a flagship or two. The real question is” death star 3 “ vs invading and occupying 4 planets? Or however many it destroyed. Except I don’t count the first order as canon.

You’re idea for the Empire would make it pretty *Unchill* people would like *NOT* join it or something.

Best bet, have palpatine put thawn all things military cause he seem to know what was better for empire. I mean imagine if empire was run more efficiently and resources used more wisely. No doubt the rebels will have a much more organized and well equipped galactic empire. Also i got a what if scenario that you kind already did but wanted opinion on. What if Sith empire appeared in galactic empire era? How would they do against sidious and his empire? Also before someone points out, i doubt their ships would be outdated as if they kept their eyes and ears on events during clone wars to palpatine reign then most likely they adapt their technology to be on equal if not better than the galaxy.

Like u say I think there better off without the death star realistically, because fear can only keep some one in line for so long. That it also takes alot of resources to build it, isn't worth it in the long run. But this empire u describe in the video I believe it would last alot longer or heck possibly to the length of thousands of years if they kept spending the right way because there wasn't really any big threat out there. Well the other aliens that hate droids come in from the unknown regions come I forgotten there names even attack the empire would be far more prepared then in are time line and would rather probably kill the invaders off pretty quickly. So the only problem I see is possible the dark troopers because the people might protest about it because the anti droid thing going on from the clone wars, let's be real alot a people we're affected but at the end the day I don't think they can even do much about it if the empire became this powerful that your every day storm trooper is actually dangerous

If Thrawn was human, then the Empire would have lasted longer. And the Empire was not a true military, it was an armored police force. The Grand Army of the Republic was more of an army than the Imperial Army. The Clone troopers were better trained and loyal than the Stormtroopers.

Yeah I mean when you have Star Destroyers and Super Star Destroyers that can beat any conventional force in a fair fight do you really need anything bigger than that? As in have the centerpiece of the fleet be a Star Destroyer just one and have it surrounded in a fleet of smaller more specialized ships. With one superstar destroyer per sector surrounded by 4 Star Destroyer fleets and use it only for rapid reaction never put it in first. Also, add the rest of the stuff in the video + upgrades to Star Destroyers and Super slowly when able and you got a scary effective force.

You want logistics join the Army. Stormtroopers make do.

That is basically what happens in canon

So basically they would have UNLIMITED POWER!!! What if the empire was opened to other species?

I can't really say their is a downside to this idea and it would have worked so much better then the deathstars

I think the Death Star was impractical I think something a sovereign class could or eclipse would be a better siege weapon

Well here is the problem with the Empire operating without superweapons. The Rebellion is an enemy without borders. They use hit and attacks and the only real way to respond is either send out most of their forces and risk them attacking and taking an important planet, or reinforcing their own planets and looking weak. The Death Star was built with the hopes that if they made something so powerful no-one would help the Rebellion for fear of reprisals.

I can't really take non old republic starwars seriously, because it's just OP rebels vs goofy incompetent Imperials
