There is actually 5 endings, and there was A LOT left out. There are several Easter eggs as well. There are secret codes you have to put in. If you were to see the whole story, it's a lot more sinister than what you've seen here.

Pretty sure there's more than 5, especially if you have Burnt Forest and Whitespace seperate from each other. Not to mention the joke ending and possibly still active Pink Forest (it was found in the files, but no method to access it has been discovered yet)

When you do the password and go at the white screen you need to walk to the right to see the message "July 31st, 1992 - I am truly impressed by their detective skills. The evidence bestows me. I think the killer is mario, as it says "He loves red" and mario wears red. and there is the ending with the blood...

what if it was luigi. he has about the same sprite, just different colors. since luigi is canonically the younger brother, he had second choice. mario got luigi's favorite color (red), mario got peach, mario got the glory, and mario got what luigi envied. what if this is a revenge story

I love this hack. I discovered it about two or three years ago. This is the first and only hack I've ever seen that was truly terrifying and not some lame copypasta. Like, it has a story, and a decent one at that... once you figure it out - something I haven't done.

Yeah, this hack actively remembers your progress and can and will prevent resets on most replica consoles and emulators

Here's the story I'm getting: There are serial killer(s) roaming freely around the kingdom, leaving behind only dead bodies and ghost towns. We (the player) explore this desolate wasteland from the perspective of two surviving individuals, namely Mario and Peach. However, they are being closely monitored by someone.... Along the way, we get strange and cryptic hints about the killer's identity from an unknown entity. This entity could be many different things, but I find it most likely that it is either the killer taunting us, or one of their victims pleading for help. Why, then couldn't they be more specific? They can't risk getting caught. Or perhaps they are only present spiritually and/or their meaning is lost in translation, as this entity does not have a physical form that is visible to us, making it seem as if they are here in mind, if not in body. The "again?" before every new attempt at the level represents the frustration and anger at failure. Failure to survive, failure to solve this mystery, etc. The inability to run and spin jump could either be a coding thing or the character's forgetfulness, like the place has a strange spell upon it. It could also be due to fear or the curiosity about the place. Also, it hinders speedrunners which is a fine example of annoying people. However the mystery is never quite solved. Our games are ended far too soon, cut short by the elusive murderers. We died without purpose, leaving everyone to forever wonder what exactly happened to us. No one will ever know just what happened in this one prosperous, lively kingdom that caused it to become a desolate, abandoned graveyard, eternal resting place of many. Who is the killer? That remains a mystery. (Personally I think it's Luigi/Toad since neither of them are here, there's one part that mentions "he likes red" which could be referring to Mario rather than the colour itself, seeing as Mario is often associated with red in the kingdom. It fits as both admire and look up to Mario as a hero.) But hey, that's just a theory...

I think the story is that someone wanted to make a scary rom hack but couldn't come up with a good story, so they decided instead that being incomprehensible was kind of like being scary.
