Do kids not learn "standard" Japanese? In schools before the 1990s Swedish kids weren't allowed to speak dialects or other languages, they were basically forced to learn standard Swedish. Sadly this has messed up my local dialect, I still speak it, but I don't know any of the words so it's just standard Swedish with a bit of an accent.

@@joelthorstensson2772 I imagine that like school children around the world Japanese kids are taught the "official" standard version of Japanese in school . However this does not preclude the daily use of the many local/regional street dialects, slang and accents as Shogo and his team demonstrated in his video. To make it even more interesting there are also different versions of written Japanese!

Dialects are used in normal conversations with friends but we all lose the accent when we speak formally!! The thing with Kyoto is that it has a unique intonation so it's probably difficult to learn if you didn't grow up using it.

I love listening to these dialects. My wife is from Nagasaki Prefecture and at first was shy about teaching me words and phrases in her dialect, then Sakamichi no Apollon came out. Some characters speak in Sasebo-ben and since then she became more open about teaching it to me and has been happy to share it. My Japanese teacher at the time, who was from Sasebo, was adamant about me not learning dialect because she felt it was embarrassing to speak.

I lived in Aomori prefecture for about six years. When I was in the south people said I talked like a farmer, immediately recognizing I was from up north, often exactly where. In the United States that might be rude depending on who says it but I never got that sense in Japan. More just surprise that I had a less typical accent for foreigners.

I was stopped by a nice old lady and told to clean up my language. I didn't say anything rude from Tokyo Japanese, but I guess it was in Hokkaido! 😳 I apologized for offending her. My grandmother ( my mom's mom ) was born in Hiroshima. She also had cousins who lived in Beppu prefecture and Osaka. Having visited Japan twice in the 80s, I don't recall any of her family using the specific dialects whenever they spoke, so I'm assuming they only spoke in the standard Tokyo dialect and I was studying Japanese in high school at that time, I could understand some of the basic words and phrases. Ever since my grandmother passed away, I can't speak a lick of Japanese now even if my life depended on it. I also was a big fan of the Hokuto No Ken ( Fist of the Northstar ) anime series.

It's interesting learning about this. Is it fair to say that japanese dialects tend to change the grammatical structures, and sometimes the pitch, but the pronunciation doesn't seem to radically change? In the UK I think it's kind of the opposite. Grammar rarely changes, but the pronunciation can differ wildly. Both countries seem to have their own regional words though.

I'm half Japanese half Romanian, and I grew up (and continue to live) in Romania. I still grew up connected to Japanese culture, but only so much. I'm glad for channels like these that show aspects of Japanese culture. It makes me feel a little closer to Japan.

Interesting content :) When I was younger, I watched the anime Lovely Complex (RabuCon), and they were speaking in Kansai dialect, so all this honma, -hen, -chau, -wa speaking brings memories

Very interesting video Shogo. I see that a few of you grew up in or around Hiroshima. I find the Mōri clan be the most fascinating of the old families. I was just wondering, with how pivotal the Samurai clans were for a big part of Japanese history, how are they perceived by modern people living there. Are they just interesting historical figures you learn about in school and then kind of forget or ignore, or are they present in someway in the psyche of local Japanese people kind of like a local superhero or mascot?

could probably answer that by asking yourself if people still think of all the dead yorks and lancasters as they go about their modern lives. your projection onto the culture is uncomfortable.

@@darkiepoo8949 Seeing as though I love history, yes I absolutely do think about that from time to time, especially if I'm walking past historical landmarks. Also why on earth are you randomly replying to a year old message?

We have many dialects in the US, sometimes it is almost a different language. By the way, if you go to the southeastern US and order food, they will always ask you if you want grits. I love the camaraderie that you have. It is almost as if you were brothers and sisters. I hope you get 2,000,000 subscribers by January. You are always entertaining and you always seem to have fun.

First anime phrase Fullmetal Alchemist, Kansai sounds like Samurai and Hiroshima sounds like Yakuza and Fukuoka sounds like mama-san in charge of a geisha house.
