What if Luke Skywalker Died in Return of the Jedi? - FanScription

Ойын-сауық

With The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars was taken in a much darker direction. When Return of the Jedi hit theaters in 1983, one would assume they’d follow through on how bleak that first sequel got. However, what was released had a mix of tones that ranged from The Emperor forcing Luke to fight his own father to...cute little teddy bears called the Ewoks easily killing Storm Troopers... Is there a way to fix Jedi to match the tone of Empire in a more logical progression? The answer is yes, but there needs to be more of a sacrifice from the protagonists. Namely, Luke Skywalker. Rob Walker brings you his version of Return of the Jedi in this month’s FanScription!

    There were several good ideas in here: the interrogation of Jabba's men, the return of Boba Fett, the Rebel Alliance taking the Ewoks more seriously, and Moff Jerjerrod getting a nice little speech when it looks as though they're all going to die. But Luke Skywalker dying? I'm sorry, but that just wouldn't work for a number of reasons. The most obvious is the fact that not only has Luke been the protagonist of the whole saga, but the only living Jedi Knight remaining. Who's supposed to carry on now? Leia isn't ready! And with no one left alive to train her, she never will be! But just as important is the cultural/historical context of 1983. STAR WARS was the movie franchise that pulled Hollywood out of its hyper-realistic, Vietnam/Watergate era "relevancy" phase and paved the way for the many fantasy-based family-friendly blockbusters of the 1980s and '90s. By making STAR WARS too dark, you abort that trend almost before it's begun. Fantasy films didn't start getting truly downbeat and grounded in reality until THE MATRIX, and that wasn't until 16 years later. (Incidentally, I've always felt a bit sorry for Millennials who grew up watching those cyber-jerks in THE MATRIX instead of the more idealistic heroes of, say, TRON or THE LAST STARFIGHTER. Those kids never realized what they missed out on.)

    I do wonder whose lightsaber it was. It wasn't Luke's, first or second, since first was still lost with his hand and he had his duel with Vader in the throne room. Not to mention it was given to Luke from Yoda. It can't be Obi Wan's, since that was left on the first Death Star. Possibly Yoda's, but that'd be far too small for a human to wield properly. Since this is a pre-expanded universe timeline, I can't think of too many other people it could have been...

    Hell, it works even now. And I enjoyed all 3 trilogies. Part of why I love fan fiction, is showing what could have been, even changing one minor scene. Absolutely love the possibilities, creators, and even my own mind, can come up with. Image E 3, if Palpatine felt something being a bit off, and he didn't reveal him being Sidious in jis office, but Anakin had researched sith statues. He then goes to Yoda, and tells him something felt wrong, in the chancellor's office, tied to an object on the room, and asks, Master Yoda, can you jelp3me find information on Sith pbjects in the restricted section? He agrees, and they see a couple Sith pbjects,.recalled from prior visits. Imagine where yoi would take it from there

    This was sounded really compelling! The only thing I would tweak with what you said is the part with vader and Luke. Instead of vader dying outright I would suggest that he helps Luke pull the reactor out of the planet, dying as soon as the reactor cleared the atmosphere. This would give vader the chance to connect with the force one last time alongside his son while still giving Luke his grand finale with the fading star.

    That is a brilliant idea. themes of lonliness, change, isolation could be present. The idea that there might be oither toys that were brought to dorms as decorations for rooms could be a thing. There is no more playtime and all the other toys are also dealing with loss of friends and interaction. Maybe there could be a few of "the lost", toys that ended up in the lost and found and stay in a college dorm long after their owners are gone. But instead of controlling and malicious like hugsalot bear, they are just kinda insane. Maybe even introduce the concept of death of toys. That when they are no longer things people even notice they eventually die. Lot of neat ideas you could do with that. Good job.

    If a movie universe and series is GOOD, little synopsis like this are almost as good as watching an actual movie. A great movie leaves out enough visual details for the imagination to make AMAZING, creating it's own lore and side-story. At the same time, spending less time on unnecessary story elements allows for more complexity in the important stuff (the battle).

    This is great! I watched this a couple years ago and really liked it. I like how you addressed many of the issues. While still fighting a planet killer super weapon, you made it feel fresh. I actually watched another rewriting “Return of the Jedi” video and came up with my own plot ideas. I scrapped the super weapon entirely. Maybe it could be a little Easter egg somewhere that an Imperial officer mentions that after the rebellion is crushed they can build another one. Or they could begin to build them into Star destroyers like the Final Order fleet. But I like to keep that going. So sources for my inspiration include Star Wars Infinites ANH, that video, and the DOTF script, because it literally would have became my 2nd favorite after empire it’s perfect. Anyway I would start with the twins on the command ship of a rebel fleet, much like the end of Empire.I would have Luke sneak off the cruiser in An imperial shuttle stolen by the Rebels with the droids. He’d head towards Tattooine, for Jabba’s Palace. Leia would stay there to not draw attention to their plan. I would then have had many Tie Fighters fly in and try to shoot the head ship. It is locked by a deflector shield. Things can come out but not come in, just for plot armor really. The ties being fought by fighters including someone else, wedge maybe, in Red 5. Maybe just a pleb rebel. A Plebel. I just thought it’d be cool to have someone take over Luke’s signature fighter. Many of the other ships including to smaller cargo ships, were destroyed. I would put in that space battle there because you have to have one in Star Wars and I don’t really know where else to put it. Then the super star destroyer would come out of hyperspace. I would then have the empire board the ship. Vader would quickly take control of the ship. He would show massive control by choking everyone in the briefing room in the ship (except Leia who hid, and one soldier). He wanted Luke. His booming voice could be heard from all over the ship. He knows Skywalker is here and will kill everyone aboard, one at a time until he reveals himself and comes with him to the emperor. Leia heard the necks snap for four Rebels before revealing herself. The sounds of choking and bones breaking would haunt her maybe for the rest of her life. Leia tells Vader that Luke is gone. She will gladly come prisoner again if he spares the rest on the ship. Vader realizes she could be potentially more valuable in luring out Luke. He agrees. He points to a rebel who wasn’t choking and summons him to come with him, thanking him for deactivating their hyperdrive, and revealing their location. They drive off and still bomb the capital ship, destroying the last of the Rebels. This is where I would have the Rebels be all but destroyed, forget TLJ. You’d think she’d learn from Alderaan to not help Vader out. (At least the first time she could lie.) On the ship, Vader could sense the bottling rage in her. Vader could sense something more. The force connection between Luke and Leia on cloud city opened something in her. Darth Vader continued to taunt her with Alderaan. She begin to clench her fists. 2 stormtroopers and the traitor lifted in the air and smash into the walls, falling dead. She was shocked. She’d seen this in Luke but not like this. Vader said Luke is no longer valuable to them. Leia would commune to Luke that the resistance is gone, but would leave out what just happened. Lando would wait until Luke arrived to sneak in and release Han while everyone’s focus was on him. They’d be sent to the Sarlacc Pit after Luke killed the rancor. Lando would also be forced to jump after him freeing Han. Han wouldn’t be sacrificed to the Sarlacc. He’d stay by Boba to watch his friends die. Han whispered to Boba that if he helps him get rid of Jabba, and he will help him take over the underworld as will Chewbacca. So Han and Chewy would be bounty hunters not Smugglers. Boba tells him he is too slimy and can’t be trusted. Han said that as slimy as he may be he is a man of his word. Boba would temporarily become a protagonist as he moved his blaster away froms chest and shot Jabba without even looking and instantly killing him like he did to Bib in Mandalorian. Jabba fell from the throne. He sat in the chair and said that he is taking over and if anyone has a problem, this rocket will kill everyone on the barge, himself included. They all dropped their weapons. Han gave Boba a look, raising an eyebrow and smirking. “Bring them in.” Boba said. Then most of this story would be Boba bringing them to rally a bounty syndicate to combat the empire. This would allow Han to kind of become a background character, which works since Harrison debated coming back anyway. This is a smaller part. Plus Boba is awesome. Luke would venture alone to Corasaunt. Having someone look over the city and be an agent on the inside to notify defenses and such would help. It makes sense for Luke to go, because he is the least involved with the crime world and because he might be the best bet at finding Leia. Luke knows not to go into an imperial quarters alone, even though his skill and proficiency in the force has increased. He’d fly the Rebels stolen imperial shuttle through defenses and lands on an unoccupied area. Fog littered the abyss into the levels below. He’d find civilians in an underground area in the lower levels which in canon we know belongs to scum and the poor. Luke would meet seemingly almost a homeless shelter. Civilians lay around campfires and seem scared but also in a weird way, content. Luke learns they are from Alderaan. The seeming leader is Bail Organa, Leias adopted father. Luke sleeps the night among these people. He dreamed about Dagobah. About Yoda. About Ben. In his dream he mentioned he was back to finish his training as promised. Yoda says that he doesn’t require more training. Luke was confused. Obi Wan explained that he confronted his father. They had to reflect on their claims he was basically being stupid in the previous movie. They realized letting people fall into danger for promise of greater power, was selfish. Luke, while not ready, fought his problems head on. This is what a Jedi should do. They explained they are sorry for withholding the identity of his father. He wasn’t ready to hear it. But Obi Wan then told Luke to not underestimate the Emperor. Or his Father. And that he must face them, and free his sister. “Leia? Leia is my sister?” He asked but also at the same time stated it, if that is a thing. Darth Vader tortured Leia. He began to train her in the force. When she was ready, he gave her her very own lightsaber. But it wasn’t just any lightsaber. It was the Skywalker lightsaber. He must have found it on cloud city and have his troops recover it. She ignited it. It now glows red. Showing it now has been touched by Vader, instead of Anakin. She began to spar. At certain points when she gained the upper hand, she’d smile, pleased. Darth Vader looked at her, noticing something about her. A similarity to someone he used to know. So at this point I have explained most of the plot. Alderaan forces and other oppressed citizens would take the places of Ewoks on ground battle. Mostly with sharpened spears, and pitchforks. But maybe also blasters. I like they idea of them throwing Spears and javelins more. Maybe bows and arrows. I don’t know. Bounty hunters and Han Chewy and Lando took sky battle. Millennium Falcon and Slave 1 tag teaming with some other ships definitely would be cool against Star destroyers. Luke would use the ground battle as a distraction to get into the palace. He couldn’t just waltz in. In the Hallway of the palace, Luke would meet Darth Vader alone. That’s where the “I have accepted one truth. That you were once Anakin Skywalker” dialogue. Vader and Luke would walk through the palace into an elevator bring them far below the planets crust. Into the core. The emperor resided there with Leia. The room was dark. With the only light being the drifting magma. She wasn’t a slave though. She was a dark side acolyte. She wore Sith Robes, like Palpatine’s For amusement and to see the superior Skywalker, Palpatine forces Leia to duel Luke. Luke must defend himself. “I will not fight you, sister.” “Sister?!” Leia asked. Luke explained. “So be it then, brother.” Vader stared, intrigued. The twins continued to fight. Palpatine decided to shoot Lightning at them, to spice up the fight. It was caught by Anakin’s blade. Not Vader’s. He stopped shooting Lightning. The machinery from around the room began to combust and melt. Palpatine Cackled. He lunged towards Vader, pulling the saber from his apprentice’s hand. Anakin pulled another saber from behind his waist and blocking the strike. Obi-Wans saber. Anakin and Palpatine fight atop the steps, while Luke and Leia battles at the base. “Go my children! Leave this place!” The rumbling of raw force energy caused it to collapse, allowing the lava to steadily rise and exploDe soon. The twins got out with Leia turning back good with their father sacrificing himself. The battle was over. Han and Chewy were men of their words and went to work for Boba. Until Boba took in new talent and let them go. That can be either Fennec or Mara Jade. Luke restarted the Jedi. Leia restarted the senate. The end.

    This was a very well thought out and creative idea for a video series! As an idea for other videos, could you cover another few threads of plot I found troubling with Star Wars? Specifically in the Last Jedi. Would have been more fitting if the character Rose died when she knocked Finn out of the way of the blast? Also, what if they shortened the time or found a different way to make the imperial city more interesting as they went to looking for a hacker. That whole scene was a really boring part, and also. What of the hundreds of ways would be best for Captain Phasma because they are doing nothing for her character whatsoever.

    this would’ve been incredible, someone hire this guy. This movie was indefinitely better not only by return of the jedi (which isn’t even that bad to begin with) all the sequel trilogy and all the prequel trilogy. The original trilogy is already a classic part of cinema but if the final instalment was this it would’ve been so epic

    Hey do you think you can rewrite the Star Wars prequels too?

  • @septymesk7721
    @septymesk77215 жыл бұрын

    So, all in all, I love most of this layout; I think it really does a great job of addressing issues that should have had more buildup, bit didn't show as much of a dichotomy as was intended. That being said, I have a few issues with some of this, and it basically breaks down to the shift of a lot of it instead of just redoing the parts that need it. Like, I love the rework of Leia and Han as doing important stuff, the Ewoks used to Express the tech vs nature motif better, etc, and I love the usage of the starkiller base to build more intensity and fear; but, tbh, I don't think everything you have put in this needs so much of a re-work. So, what I see as a problem here is, a lot of what was going on in the movie, you shifted to another, or to someone else. I think that the stuff with Luke, Leia, etc, you are basically just shifting the hero's journey away from Anakin/Vader, and putting it on Luke and Leia; in addition, the first 2 movies were designed to set up Luke as growing into the hope that the galaxy needs, so if it instead shifts to Leia being the "new hope"... it basically relegates Anakin's sacrifice and martyrdom to a side issue, and takes all the buildup of Luke and throws it out. Finally, I get that lots of people like Boba Fett... like, I understand that he has developed a cult of personality in the time since the movies and people treat him as a bad ass... But, its important to remember; he wasn't intended to be that important of a character; like, there's an interview out there where people who worked on the films (even Lucas) have stated they don't understand or "get" how Fett became such a beloved character. To me personally, Fett was intended to be a throwaway character, but people have since fallen in love with him, and that is what makes so many people upset about his treatment in the film. I don't think it really is necessary to re-work his character to appease people.
