You touched on so many great points. It's classic in art school, they say, "You have to know the rules before you can break them," and everyone hates hearing that. There is a sense of mastery that comes across when you break the rules after knowing them. The one thing you didn't touch on which can help people if they don't like their color palettes is to think about how colors interact with each other. I have typed myself as a bright winter and one of the things I hated about my palette, is color combinations can feel like Christmas or nautical/preppy or school spirit, and that's not necessarily fit me. I had to shift my focus to more unusual color combinations, like black and electric blue/cobalt blue, which I love and previously I was really struggling with blue. I never ever gravitated towards it. I also struggle with pinks, I don't like the association of girly. But Hot Pink or Magenta with Army Green, feels so much more my speed. It's definitely another level of complexity, but I actually came to this conclusion through art. I spent time painting with blue and working through what colors I liked with blue and in what amounts. Then tried to take that to my personal style. When feeling envious about someone else's style or color season, I take it as an opportunity to just say I love it on them and every time I see them, I get to enjoy it on them, as if it's a gift they are giving to me - instead of cultivating a sense of jealousy or envy in myself. If we all looked the same it would get pretty boring.

Very well said. As a bright winter I can identify. I've never really preferred vibrant color. Thankfully there are handful of neutrals in the palette to work with. Also I enjoy the icy bright tones too. I never really wore yellow because most of them are too warm. So I'm amazed how the bright winter yellow looks on me. It's fun to discover new colors that work for us. I like to think of them as doing their job well LOL. My favorite part of working with my season is how little make up is necessary when wearing my best colors. Don't get me wrong I love make up but I don't like having to spend 30 minutes trying to fix myself up when the perfect lipstick color, blush and eyeliner are all I actually need.

@@pajamamama5965 I think most people aren't prepared to be a bright season (unless you gravitate towards those colors already). I feel like culturally we are generally swayed into the more soft, muted or neutral tones. I also sealed the deal on bright winter when putting on acid yellow clothes or chartreuse. I would show my mom the clothes and she would be like, ugh no. Then I put it on and she would be like, it works. Putting all the work into color season was also not to wear make up! I tend to struggle with low energy and after working with my colors, I realized the colors I was wearing made me look even more tired. So I felt like it was worth it to wear my colors, even on days when I feel tired at least when I see myself in the mirror I look energized because my colors give me that lift and, so maybe it helps me feel more energized psychologically.

@@jen48799 Wow!!! yes, you are absolutely right. The bright colors attract attention and convey boldness in personality. I also struggle with low energy and have a more congenital introverted personality. I've only worn a handful of brights in all my life like red at Christmas LOL. But yes, wearing drab soft muted neutrals made me look older and more tired and I had to put on a ton of makeup to correct that. I'm astonished to see that for my complexion, the brighter the better. I have a neon blue/green blanket of my teenagers that I wrapped around my face and it made my skin look flawless. I'm Still adjusting to the change but the first thing I did was declutter my closet and my cosmetics. And I'm having fun shopping for new bright colors. I'm grateful that fuchsia is in stores right now.

Love this! I am so glad that I had some art background before I started learning about color analysis! I struggle with any shade of blue too, but I often get gifted or somehow end up with blue pieces but never wore them! Now that I have a better understanding of the rules, I can effectively combine the blue pieces with other pieces and certain hairstyles/makeup to make a coherent look that I enjoy. I even came up with outfits that I like with ORANGE in it!!! (Im so proud of myself lol), and YELLOW too! Those are tough colors for me. Good luck to you, thank you for sharing your insights!

Yes! Love the example of Rhianna. It’s shocking to see her all in soft colours, actually. And I think it’s precisely because she does have that dramatic streak through all of her traits. She still chooses a lot of softness and roundness and things that harmonize with her body type but adds that drama by totally going off book with the colours. Or vice versa. Or any combination thereof. I guess it’s the old adage, “you have to master the rules to break them effectively”. I always appreciate Trinny for this. She will quite often put on an outfit that isn’t a great colour for her but she loves the piece so she shows how to make it work through various means. Or a certain cut or fabric that doesn’t really suit her body type but, again, she loves the piece so she figures out how to make it work. I love it because it gives you so much freedom to decide what you want to feel like or want to convey with your outfits. You knocked this series out of the park, Jenn. I’ll be reviewing them in future for sure. The work you put into them shows in the quality of the content.

Love this POV! Rihanna is a great example - in her 'soft summer' phase, she looks like an entirely different person - I really don't think she looks as good, like she blends into the background. The dramatic color contrasts she evolved into suits both her coloring and energy so well. I'm a true autumn and all the true autumn colors are my 'best' colors - but because I'm a redhead with pale skin, I'll sometimes wear dark black or true white for the contrast/sophistication. I just have to make sure my makeup holds up to the contrast. This series was so great, thank you.

My biggest takeaway: In your color season - you look good, effortless, harmonious and complimented Outside of your color season - you can look striking, dramatic, cool and chic OR Heavy, dull, drab and/or tired I would add if you wear colors in a second or tertiary season you can be glam if your hair and makeup is excessively styled (aka celebrity) you make a bigger splash 💦🤩 Thanks teach 🥳💕

I'm someone who needed to know my color season. I've always used black & white and navy as my safe colors and I never thought I'd get bored of them but I did. Plus I always felt something was missing. I've Wasted so much money on make up just not ever able to figure out what looks best. I've been craving color and I knew what looked terrible but hardly ever stumbled upon what looked best. I never dreamed I'd be a bright winter. No wonder nothing was working since I avoided bright colors.. I fully embraced the change and knowing my season has simplified my shopping experience, getting ready, and decluttering the wrong make up colors and jewelry. My confidence has increased and I'm getting more compliments than I could have imagined.

You touched on my long standing theory when you were talking about Rihanna. I believe that following your color season may not give you the desired effect if you already have a sense of style. Example: If you like to come across as a bit edgy then following your color palette may not be for you. I also think our essences can overpower our color season. I’m a soft summer and I love vibrant poppy red and that is apparently one of my “worst colors” however it matches my energy and I’m always noticed and getting compliments when wearing because its also harmonious with my romantic and gamine essences. I also have a high amount of classic essence along with being a DC kibbe and black is harmonious with me. I think I use colors in my pallet the most when I go make up free.

Well, know I know why (I am a dark winter with a bit of softness), so I made peace that brighteness is not my destiny. I also appreciate the fact that most shops have my colours! I was also happy to have found some other colours, which are amazing for special occasions (dark imperial blue, dark magenta and dark green).

It helped me to look at my wardrobe full of dark and dull colours (which suited a dark winter palette perfectly, as it turned out) from a different perspective :) Also, as an artist, I wondered why I gravitated towards the cool colours like dark pinks, teal and purple, and contrasts as long as I remember. Never had I known this would coincide with my colour palette! The fully warm coloured pictures never came out as harmonious as they would look with the cooler tones. Maybe because I subconsciously knew what looked better and it translated into fashion AND art :D

I appreciate your use of Rhiana as the color season rebel. I can relate. However, I picked up some neutral Tees for summer and resisted the urge to grab the cobalt one and instead took the light blue/grey. Imagine my surprise when I saw that my complexion was soft, clear, and bright in that color! It was a revelation. I was a little bored until finding out I was right between the soft summer and soft winter. Also, if I want a warm color I wear it at the bottom in a skirt. I figured out I can use charcoal as black and it looks really flattering. You can still make things kind of counter culture, if you want.

Me to a T, including the lower contrast in summer and olive skin (I look positively green without a tan), although I veer more soft winter/deep summer. I think if you get on fixated it takes the fun out of the process and often we are drawn to the colors that suit us best, meaning color, style and mood.

I've enjoyed your unique take on colour analysis. I've finally worked out, that like many people, I don't fit exactly into a specific season. I'm closest to a light spring. But now I also realise how few soft spring colours are actually for sale as clothes. Apart from a few soft pinks. I feel like in Australia 80% of clothes available are for winters and summers. So many cool colours.

I know what you mean about not finding the right colours in shops (in Australia), my closest season is probably True Winter, and for ages we've had mostly warm, earthy tones available, so most of my purchases from this time have been black, white and navy and not much 'fun' colour. So I'm excited to finally see winter colours again :) Don't worry, Spring will have it's turn again, and in the mean time maybe try second hand shopping, I've recently discovered Depop and it's been great for finding colours that aren't commonly in shops right now.

For me, there was the hard decision between acknowledging what my real season is and what I wished it was. I've always wanted to be part of the warm gang, because I just appreciated how healthy, golden and glowy warm tones and skin are. However, I had to accept the fact that I am most likely a Deep Winter and that I am indeed neutral-cool. It's funny because I actually love cool colours the most but I still felt bummed out that I'd never have that yummy warm glow 🥲

I’m definitely going to rewatch this colour series. Maybe I will finally figure out my season… With my skin being a neutral undertone I never know if I should go more cool or warm and that’s where my analysis ends☹️ I’m so rubbish at figuring it all out! I used to think I was a winter, now I’m not so sure. I hate yellow and orange so definitely not an autumn 😂 Thanks for doing this series. I always look forward to your videos 😘

I hope you can figure out your season. Personally I have found it very fun and freeing. I also struggled because I'm neutral. I was confused because I was able to wear both gold and silver, Black & white but also cream and gray. So the standard tests weren't working. Plus my hair is dark brown (not black) and my eyes are blue so I never thought I was a winter. I knew my worst colors were mustard and Olive, So I figured maybe I was a summer season. Bright winter was a surprise. But that is one of the few seasons that can wear both gold and silver and are neutral to cool skin tone.

I would love some info on how to use color theory to wear colors that are “unflattering”, beyond just wear it away from your face. Can we harness the power of optical illusions to make a color look different? Like a yellow top makes me look jaundiced, but could I pair it with blue earrings or pants to “cool it down”?

Can you make a video on how greying hair can affect seasonal colors and what we wear? I’m a 40 year old winter with black hair and porcelain white skin, and I have over 80% grey hair now 😬 . At this point I have to dye my roots every 2 weeks and it seems it would be easier to go to a shade of blonde or light brown at this point so that the roots will blend in more I’d have to dye my roots less often. But would that change my winter wardrobe?

Or maybe the color analyst was simply wrong. I have SO many people telling me that I am completely soft, like soft summer, just judging from my look, that I cannot count them. Only when I put on something really soft and discuss with them, they admit that this is not the right intensity for me. Even during a professional color analysis: I ended up being winter in that analysis, but only because I pointed out how sick these light and soft colors made my skin look (I am light olive). I am sure she would have gone with summer, since that was what my overall look told her.

I think dramatics - in Kibbe body type and/or essence wise - can play it up when it comes to color intensity (brightness) and successfully 'challenge' the rules, even if they're a soft season. Anya Taylor Joy - is a Kibbe dramatic. Tilda Swinton - is a Kibbe dramatic. Rihanna - has a dramatic essence.

  • @maranathamama

I personally think Rihanna’s style has become darker - which I suppose mirrors how her career has diverted in recent decades. I actually liked her style better in her younger years! Softer, sweeter & more harmonious instead of attention grabbing. I think we will be naturally complimented with sincerity when we dress ‘appropriately’.

100% with the point raised about deep/dark-typed people being envious of those who can wear lighter colours... I got typed as a deep autumn who needs high contrast, and it's one of my most HATED colours and especially season!! I'm sorry, but I don't enjoy wearing the colours of Toyota burnt orange car paint, olives or DIRT especially. I thought these colours made me look sickly and yellow, so I always gravitated towards looking pale instead! I always thought I was a soft winter or dark summer because I love cool, calm blues, but I knew my skin doesn't tolerate light colours that well. Welp, if the soft summer colours make me look even more like a wallflower, then so be it... kinda what I am anyway :')

I think it's just perspective. If you are blonde and go dark, you would be winter, but even if you wear winter, there would be an obvious clash in skin, eye color extra. Color analysis helps to enhance what you have but if you are use to wearing specific colors, etc. then that is ok,too. It's an option but not a rule.
