    You've mentioned that they barely launched the lifeboats they had on Titanic so even if they had more, they would've had time to launch them. That being the case, they wouldn't have been able to use Californian's lifeboats to ferry off of Titanic, but they could've picked up those in the water. Also, they could've kept some people in the lifeboats rather than bringing them onboard. After all, it was only until another ship could arrive and that's what ended up happening, anyway, so additional lifeboats plus some coming onboard would've been a better situation.

    Ii wasn’t sure about the ‘what if videos’ before but I’ve grown to love them. It’s fascinating to think what could have happened IF this had happened or IF that person had done that thing. The Titanic disaster was such a powerful mix of everything coming together in the wrong way. Bit of weird weather, bit of design weakness maybe, lots of humans being human, huge amounts of terrible luck and/or terrible timing and there you go. It happened in large part BECAUSE no one could conceive of such a thing happening. Air France Flight 447 is called the Titanic of the Skies and she really was. The same combination of weird weather, instrument failure (albeit temporary), crew mixups and screwups and whatnot and now we have a passenger jet in the same ocean as the Titanic, both sent there with the very best of intentions. Like the Titanic, if any one of those factors had been the only one to happen that night it likely wouldn’t have happened.

    They would really only need to transfer people into life boats though. I don't know how much capacity the Californian's lifeboats has, but if only 10 lifeboats of the same size as Titanic's were available on another ship were launched and filled, that's 650 people. Plus lets say only 10 life boats worth of Titanic's people transferred to another ship and were available for more people that's another 650 saved. That would total 1300 more people saved out of 1517 people who died.

    I feel I should reiterate that the reason she would've survived is because in the aftermath of the Titanic disaster both Britannic and Olympic underwent some retrofits. Both ships had their WT bulkheads extend up to B-deck, and Britannic in particular was built with a double hull, making her... I believe some 9ft wider than her two older sister ships. It is because of these changes the Britannic could remain afloat with the first *six* compartments breached (Up to Boiler room 5, the coal bunker alone is *not* a full compartment)

    I actually have access to the most recent Marine Accident Investigation Branch report regarding the SS Californian's involvement in the disaster (published 1992), and it's an interesting read. It goes into some detail on the relative positions of both ships, and discusses at length how much the Californian's crew witnessed - whether they could see Titanic or any of her distress rockets - and the action (or rather, inaction) taken by Captain Lord. With regards to your question though, the concluding comments of the report discuss whether Californian would have been able to offer any real assistance if she had indeed offered help. I've transcribed the section below: If CALIFORNIAN saw the first rocket and took immediate action to head straight for it, and had quickly worked up to full speed (which would have taken several minutes) she would probably, given my minimum distance off of 17 miles, have reached the scene at just about the time of sinking. This however is unrealistic. No officer would take such action on seeing a single distant flash which might be a shooting star or even a visual aberration: such sights are quite common. More practically, if proper action had been taken as set out above, Captain Lord would have been on the Bridge at perhaps 0055 hrs and begun heading towards the rockets, but cautiously at first because of the ice for at that stage the urgency of the situation would not be known and it would be right for him to have regard for the safety of his own ship. Meanwhile, the Wireless Operator would have been called and would shortly receive TITANIC'S SOS with its incorrect position. This would have put Captain Lord in something of a quandary: probably he would have called TITANIC by wireless giving CALIFORNIAN'S position, saying what had been seen, and asking TITANIC to check her position. This would very likely have led to the error in dead reckoning being discovered, after which full speed would be made towards the correct position; but with the time lost CALIFORNIAN would arrive well after the sinking. It therefore seems clear that - if I am right as to the distance apart - the effect of CALIFORNIAN taking proper action would have been no more than to place on her the task actually carried out by CARPATHIA, that is the rescue of those who escaped. I do not think any reasonably probable action by Captain Lord could have led to a different outcome of the tragedy. So the conclusion from this report (and indeed the usual conclusion when discussed at any great length by historians) is that the conditions were simply too poor for Californian to make it to Titanic's position in time - and that's even if Captain Lord would have decided to risk his own ship in coming to Titanic's aid through dense sheet ice, had he been aware of her peril.

    @@randomrazr Another factor to consider is Captain Lorde would also put at risk HIS VESSAL in trying to reach Titanic. Your assessment is correct in that they would simply replace Carpathia. I predict Californian would arrive just around the time of the last plunge, within that last minutes when it was the worst moment, or just after the plunge when the passengers were all in the water trying to kill each other due to fight or flight. BUT if they arrived just after the plunge, they could have save more folks from the water that were in the hyperthermic shock state but still alive. Why, they could have been pulling bodies out of the water and or checking for vitals.

The Costa Concordia was beyond crippled immediately following the impact, as the enormous hole in the hull allowed seawater to flow directly into the engine room very quickly, leaving her without any propulsion nor emergency electric power. In addition she was very close to land, allowing the tide to carry her close enough to beach the ship. In Titanic's case, the engine room didn't flood until the very end. Also, the impact wasn't nearly as disastrous. An iceberg scraping a line across the hull on a modern ship would be far less disastrous than having a huge chunk of rock smash in a huge portion of the hull.

    Likely because in life-and-death situations people are rarely able to think clearly enough to form a makeshift raft, and even then you have to consider them having enough rope to tie the material together, the buoyancy of the raft (that's why Jack couldn't share the door with Rose it lacked the buoyancy to hold the weight of two adults), if people would be of sound mind enough to put the lifebelts under to help keep them above the water as much as possible to keep the people out of the water so they don't freeze (Rose was mostly out of the water and she still almost froze to death, in real life people were wet in boats A and B so tragically people who did get into boats died).

    I'm more curious of what the effects would have been as far as reforms which happened as a result of the high-profile sinking because of the high loss of life. After all, in this alternate timeline where everyone is rescued and the ship sinks empty, it would, to the people involved, simply illustrate that the system worked as intended as far as the watertight bulkheads on the ship, the number of lifeboats being adequate, and that there would always be another ship nearby which could rescue people from a sinking ship, as well as ships just using wireless to send ice reports to each other instead of there being any kind of a specific ice patrol.

They would've utilized gangway doors a lot more. Not only using titanic's boats, but Californians.. Would've been easier for 3rd class passengers for sure! Also, I'd like to do two suggestions of videos if i may: 1) Titanic crew staying in lower decks keeping power and main systems running throghtout sinking. 2) Lifeboats order of launch and details about that operation. Hello, many thanks for your wonderful work on the history of the Titanic! I wrote a previous review about the possibility of slowing down the sinking of the Titanic by placing mattresses in front of the holes of Titanic's hull. Do you think it could have worked? More generally, I find it very interesting to look for all the possibilities that could have saved the Titanic, or at least increase the number of survivors. The ship was so large, with a great amount of miscellaneous items; I'm sure there are things that could have been done to reduce this disaster. Another example; why not making rafts with all the furniture inside the ship? And what about going in reverse to reduce the water pressure on Titanic's hull (and so, the speed of flooding) ?.. Of course, this is theoretical because now we know what exactly happened and have time to think it over, but it would be very interesting to explore the different options that you could have taken (with your current knowledge), if you had been captain of the Titanic on April 14, 1912 at 11:41 a.m., just after the collision. If you could make some videos on that topic, that would be very great ! :)

  • @smokesletsgo2374

    @smokesletsgo2374

    The mattresses would have been blown away by the water pressure, water went into the ship at a rate of around 400 tons per minute. Plus by the time anyone knew there was a problem it would be near impossible to even access the holes, if you see the James Cameron film when the water comes in it's like a horizontal Niagara Falls coming in, and the crew members are swept up like they're not even there. So unfortunately the mattress theory would never work. As for the going backwards thing this is very likely to have happened, but only for a very brief time. Maybe a few minutes, before they realized the ship was f--ked no matter what

    The modern day understanding of a lifeboat, and the usage to ferry, are both correct. Just to clarify. These boats were equipped with sails, food and water, compasses, etc. In Titanic situation, The builders generally had an understanding that, because of the watertight bulkheads, Titanic would, it’s seriously injured, have enough time to ferry passengers. But both purposes were well accepted in 1912.

    Read the Clive Cussler novel Valhalla Rising. It has a ship with over 2,000 people on board. The ship is deliberately set on fire, and all fire safety systems sabotaged. NUMA had a vessel nearby with Dirk Pitt on board. The NUMA employees manage to save pretty much all but a small number of passengers and crew. Mostly having to jettison numberous equipment. Other ships manage to arrive to transfer survivors over because the NUMA vessel was on the verge of sinking, between the mass of people on board, and being damaged in the process of saving people. Not to mention that there was a storm approaching that was making the water choppy.

    I’ve another thought - what if none of the nearby ships had picked up the Titanic’s distress calls before she foundered? What would’ve happened to the survivors in the boats? Would they have been able to navigate to safety or literally just wait and hope that a ship would find them eventually? When would someone have realised the Titanic had sunk?

    I think a ship would of found them within 24/48 hours. Maybe even less then 12 hours. I've read accounts that for a month or so after titanic ships were running into bodies floating around in life jackets. That's the largely forgotten part. Ships were still going the same route. Ships with wireless heard what happened. And ships were on edge. I mean think about this.. you just got news that an iceberg took down the titanic you have a ship 1/2 the size you're going to be like oh wow this makes me consider what potential dangers my ship is up against. We'd better manover very carefully. And about 3 days after titanic another ship that had just got the news was on the same route. They started to run over bodies just like accidently running over somebody driving a car.

    You have to remember this ship sank so fast that it sank in less time then it takes to watch the movie Titanic by James Cameron of the ship sinking also remember there wasn't enough time to get everyone off the ship even if they had enough lifeboats remember the ship broke into and sank as they were still trying to load the two front collapsible 16-foot lifeboats!!! and that's why those boats capsized one was capsized and the other one was swamped with water because it almost got sucked down with the ship as it went down, so there just wasn't enough time for another vessel to save the Titanic and there wouldn't even have been enough time to get everyone into a Lifeboat and off the ship even if they had enough lifeboats for everyone!!! because they didn't even fully discharged all of the lifeboats that she was provision with to begin with... that initial hour that it took the crew and Captain Smith to assess whether the ship was going to sink or not basically was the death warrant for hundreds of people as they wasted valuable time that they could never get back!!!

Have you done a video on people on the Titanic who received some type of a dream or an omen or a warning in some kind of a way not to get on the ship and because of it they didn't get on the ship. Also people who didn't make it on to the Titanic because something came up the last minute. Like they were running late and they missed leaving on the ship. Or something came up in their life at the very last minute. I would love to see a video presentation on this type of topic.

    Perhaps an idea for a 'what if ... ' video. What if the Titanic had enough lifeboats, such as the refitted Britannic and Olympic. Could the crew have launched them all? I wondered about this, since all life boats except one collapsable were launched during the actual sinking.

  • @KevsterWilson
    @KevsterWilson3 жыл бұрын

    If another ship had arrived then White Star Line probably would of promoted the use of the Lifeboat ferry system even more until the case of the Britannic, Which had it had the same Lifeboat system as the Titanic probably would of lost more lives due to the limited lifeboats. (Britannic had more Lifeboats for the full complement as well as other mods from Titanic sinking) Another question to ask could be, Had they proceeded with the planned Lifeboat drills for that day instead of cancelling it for Sunday Services, More people definatly would of been saved as they would of been more familiar with how many people they could load into a boat.

    Love your videos! One thing that I thought you would mention is the time factor. Do you think that there would have actually been enough time for the crew and passengers to make this happen? I believe that even if the Titanic had had more lifeboats many would still have died as the ship was sinking too rapidly. What are your thoughts?

  • @neonsamurai1348
    @neonsamurai13483 жыл бұрын

    Couple of issues with your theory, first the Queen Mary was refitted as a troop transport ship during the war, and the refit enabled the ship to handle that many troops on it, so it was not over capacity (the pictures probably taken when leaving or arriving at port, as there is no way they would have stayed out on deck cramped like that during the entire Atlantic crossing). We are also talking about a small ship that is already likely loaded to capacity with cargo and passengers, and would be very hard pressed to fit that many people on it. I also think that it would have been very difficult to ferry many the people off, mostly because of the lack of time, and the rate they could offload passengers (especially considering returning ships to the titanic would probably have to be winched back up during the early phases. They were barely had enough time to deploy most of the lifeboats before they sank.

  • @Iconoclasher
    @Iconoclasher2 жыл бұрын

    Not enough time. I think the only practical way would be for the rescue ship to pull along side the T, secure the ships with ropes and just start pushing them onto the rescue ship. Some improvised "bridge" could have been laid across the decks to get them moved ASAP.

    I was going to ask you to do a video on this topic but you beat me to it. LOL!!! :) But i'll add a couple of thoughts. A: the titanic was sinking at a tilt so it would have made transfer of passengers and crew more difficult and they would have been working against time. B if they didn't have room on the californian, the remainder could have stayed on the lifeboats till the Carpathia came as you said.

    If there was another ship there, whether it was the Californian or Carpathia, how long would it have taken to evacuate everyone off of the Titanic? Would they have been able to do that before she went under? Because it took them almost 2 hours to launch the boats the Titanic had. And is there anything the crew could have possibly done to slow the sinking long enough for the Carpathia to arrive? I know in a previous video you talked about how keeping the engines running forced water in faster, as well as obviously the gangway door being open allowed more water in and without those it might've taken longer for the ship to sink. And what if they had changed the orders given when the iceberg was spotted, like keeping the engines full steam ahead to give her better turning power, could that have caused less damage and given them more time or even allowed them to miss the iceberg altogether?

    Some things I want to point out: 1. The Californian was rated to carry 47 passengers, in addition to 56 crew, which includes the captain. So, 109 people altogether. It carried no passengers on this particular voyage, so it had been provisioned with just enough food for the crew. 2. Ferrying passengers by lifeboat is a time consuming process. With the Andrea Doria sinking in 1956, all were saved, except those in the direct line of collision. But it took all night to accomplish this, even though there was another ship immediately at the scene assisting (Stockholm). The Andrea Doria took 11 hours to sink, which helped. This was time the Titanic didn't have. 3. For the Californian to have used its own 6 lifeboats to help, they'd need men to crew each boat, plus more to work the davits and haul survivors aboard. Several of the crew were not trained seaman. This would have left insufficient crewmen aboard Californian to attend to essential routine duties. 3. Carpathia would have arrived while most lifeboats were still in the water. All the survivors would have needed to go to Carpathia in any case because it had enough room and food to accommodate the survivors, plus it had 3 doctors aboard to care for the survivors, while Californian had none. 4. Comparing Californian to Queen Mary's role in WWII is apples to oranges. QM was altered to carry this many people and, more importantly, provisioned in advance to feed that many people. In conclusion, I believe few, if any, more people could have been saved. This is for one central reason: time, which Titanic didn't have enough of. For more info, please refer to the article "The Californian Incident: A Reality Check", which I co-authored with Michael Standart and Captain Erik Wood on Encyclopedia Titanica.

    1. If they'd awakened the wireless operator they would've known that Carpathia was on it's way, so you don't need to feed anyone, you just need to wait until the Carpathia and eventually others arrive on the scene. 2. Say the Californian arrives on time takes 30 minutes to get to the Titanic, there's about 2 hours maybe to until it sinks, in 30 minutes all of the Titanic's lifeboats would've been cleared and would be rowing back to the Titanic, in the meantime the Californian's officers would've put out their own lifeboats in addition to the Titanic's it would be a big operation but in an hour and a half filling every lifeboat to full capacity you could pull everyone out. 3. In an emergency situation there are no other routine duties to be carried out, the Californian would be stopped alongside the Titanic, all it's crew would be directed towards the rescue operation, there is nothing else to do at this point until the rescue is complete. And you only really need 3 men per vessel so some 18 men out of a crew of 56 is not a big loss especially when it's just temporary. 4. The question is whether a ship can stay afloat with such overcrowding, it can, people have run the math and determined that the Californian would've stayed well buyoant regardless of the extra weight of titanic's survivors, especially because the sea was calm. ddition to the Titanic's it would be a big operation but in an hour and a half filling every lifeboat to full capacity you could pull everyone out. Thing you might argue correctly regarding point 2 is that nobody knows for sure how far the Californian was from the Titanic, the estimates range wildly from the 6 miles determined by the inquiries to 19 miles claimed by Stanley Lord himself. If you put that in the middle say 12 miles, it would've taken the Californian, at top speed, an hour to reach the Titanic, they would've gotten there at around 1:30 let's say Titanic time, less than an hour before the ship sank. And this is presuming everything went perfect and doesn't account for the lag to figure out that the Titanic is in distress and awakening the wireless operator to find out what's going on. At most then the Californian could've done the Carpathia's job and rescued the people in the lifeboats, little more.

    But you technically wouldn’t have needed to get all 2200 people onboard Just 1500, the last 700 off the Titanic (the equivalent of the number of survivors in reality) could remain in the lifeboats alongside the Californian until the Carpathia arrived

  • @Corristo89
    @Corristo89 Жыл бұрын

    Yes, they could put about 15.000 people on the Queen Mary. But they had time to prepare the QM for this job, i.e. by basically ripping out everything not needed (suites, recreational facilities, walls, etc.) and just putting in rows upon rows upon rows of bunk beds, hammocks and so on. The Californian was NOT prepared in any way, shape or form to handle over 2.000 additional people onboard, even for a short time. Technically we could also get over 200 people in our house if everyone stands really close together and all the furniture is removed. It can be done in a pinch, but certainly not for 3-4 days. Because that's how long the Carpathia took to reach New York to disembark the Titanic's survivors.

    Even if the Californian, the nearest vessel, had arrived shortly after receiving Titanic's first distress call, they would only have less than two hours to rescue the people. Not enough time. Also remember that the Titanic was listing, and the stern section was rising higher out of the water - which would have made loading the lifeboats more problematic. Yes, the Californian could have saved more people, but not everybody.

    Yet again, it kind of makes sense how they wanted to use the lifeboats, certainly for 1912 standards. So they did not just want to save money but they had a halfways sound reason to do it the way they did it. Maybe comparable to how early on, people thought seatbelts were bad because they keep you in the wreck instead of "ejecting you to safety", until data and research proved otherwise.
