What I Wish I Would Have Known: Hmmmmm...let's see: 1. Having slightly bigger parts. I like my loc size, but I wish I would have had them a little bit bigger. 2. Was more aware of the different densities in my head before determining part sizes. The top of my head, genetically, is less dense, so I worry about those locs more. 3. Overstyling. I rocked a style basically every month from month 4 to month 10 because I like it...but some of my locs have not thickened the way I expected them to. So I am laying off of them and only styling when I need to (like an event or something to that effect). 4. Overmaintenance...same reasons as right above. 5. Appreciate and embrace all of the frizz. Though my locs are maturing very nicely, I didn't appreciate the thickness of the initial budding (and had maintained around it). It has been a great 1.5yrs on my journey, but I now know how to better move forward.

Things I wish I knew (now 4.5 years): Protecting your hair when sleeping is very important. It doesn't always look 'cool' or 'sexy' (which is honestly why I took it for granted), but it prevents so much damage that you don't even think about. Whether it's a silk scarf, the lock tubes, or a satin etc. pillowcase, these can help prevent the breakage that happens from rolling around at night. I didn't think it'd make a difference, but as my locks have grown, I see the thinning tips and have had some fall out which relates to my next point.. Retwisting too often! I used to do it every 2 weeks or every month because I thought that was what you're supposed to do to keep it from looking bad.. I was wrong. 1- I was retwisting em myself and I'm no expert so it didn't even look that good in the end. 2- I was putting so much strain on them, this contributed to the thin roots I have in some places. Now I've grown much more comfortable letting my hair rock for 3-4 months before retwisting and I just touch up my sides and hairline a bit w some clippers in between and it's good (imo)! Moisturize (but with the right products)! At the turning point from when my freeform do (formed from two-strand twist left in to grow) turned into actual locks, I never switched from the thick creams I was initially using to oils that were lighter and did not leave residue. This lead to me, 3.5 years into my journey, realising that the hair butter I was using was leaving residue in my locks and contributing to greyness in some parts and weakness throughout. I felt so dumb and ashamed. So I had to start using a clarifying shampoo and do some deep washes for damage control and learn what products were best from my hair. which leads to my last point.. Learning about what my hair texture needs. I wish i knew earlier on that because my hair is 4c, I don't hold moisture well and can lead to breakage if I'm not putting the right things in it or protecting it. I knew my hair texture but I never had much reason to care before cause I usually kept my hair in a fade. Trust, it is not a fun thing to be learning about your hair texture/type 3 years into your lock journey and realising you've been neglecting it and THAT'S why you have so much breakage (in addition to other reasons). I've lost a few locks over the years due to my own laziness and neglect. PLEASE, learn what kind of curl pattern you have and treat your head accordingly. Locks can be lower maintenance in some ways than shorter styles, but you still gotta treat ya head right.

@@youssefaboutara1224 generally yeah you shouldn't be losing any. But over time losing locs is normal. You can combine locs to help strengthen a weaker one, but locs falling out is natural as your hair begins to thin out (balding and all that).

You’re right I do not like the Scalpy look and I wish I had paid attention to the parting because I would’ve liked the diamond parts because I have the square parts but I’m still loving the journey thanks for the info and I’ll keep watching

I just passed my 2 year mark with my locs. The one thing I regret is bleaching my tips. You're right about the feeling of it being very brittle. I'm always worried about my hair snapping because the tips are weakening. I only wear it in an occasional ponytail or pineapple just to keep them out of my face. I do miss when it was in the middle phase of locking because I used to sport the kilmonger look. Lol but now it's too long. I love my locs no doubt but I miss the early stages.

Currently at 15 months myself and I’ve watched your videos since about my 4 month mark….you’re videos have been some of the most informative and entertaining I’ve ever watched on locs! I’ve learned a lot about hair particularly locs and one thing I wish I knew was everyone’s hair grows different! I spent so much time watching others progress and stressing on my growth and how long it was taking that I wasn’t fully appreciating my hair…and just like you said as weird as it sounds my locs aren’t even long long like that yet but I still miss some styles and looks my locs had when they were shorter 😂😭 I’m still looking forward to doing different looks and styles with them going forward but man….it’s all about appreciation and patience for real!

I started my locs myself. The only thing I wish I had done differently was start them in the fall. Only because I started my locs at the end of spring and then spent most of the summer with them in a hair tie. It made the locs thicken and loosen around where the hair tie was. 🥴 but regardless I love them anyway and I have faith that they will sort themselves out.

Great video! I have been loc’d since April of 2020 and am now feeling the itch to dye them but I remember how bleaching my hair pre loc journey destroyed my hair to the point I had to cut it and start over, so I don’t want to cause additional harm on this beautiful journey. I have embraced my frizz and do not over style. However, I wish I would have known/understood moisturizing my Locs better. I left my curls out on my ends so I do add conditioner specifically to that area but to avoid buildup, I use clarifying shampoo for Locs which helps a lot.

Spot on hindsight & observations. I would tell anyone to research six months to a year in advance (LOL). I'm on my second "commited" loc journey :O) First time, they were comb twist and palm rolled. This time, the " interlock " method was used. Interlocking is low maintenance, quick and convenient, so there's that, but aesthetically, I think I'd prefer if they were comb-twist-palm-rolled. So, add that to the hindsight list. I'm told that they just need time to mature. Oh and thicker loc's are def the way to go these days. Volume looks better than length to me. Mine are pencil, pen or crayon diameter. So, I wish I'd specifically asked to go with thicker sections to obtain thicker loc's. Nonetheless, I have extremely coarse hair, so they still look " Marley " and the shorter one's stand up and out. So, I'm still good. End of day, I'm a " mature " male, so I'm lucky to even be able to grow loc's :O). So, not complaining. Hope this helps others. Ciao.

Congratulations on the year ! Like TP said let them breath. Also conditioners detangles the hair at the root , It's what they're designed for. Commercial conditioners usually contain silicones, acids and alcohol. Think of a strand of hair as a half open window blind. The acid in the conditioner closes them forming a slick hair strand. Which helps your hair from catching on to one another (Detangles). The silicone gives it it's shine and holds it (residue) If your bottle has words you can't pronounce in it's ingredients you want to ditch it and go for something more natural. Like natural water soluble oils for moisture. They are easier to wash out unlike conditioners that will eventually lead to residue buildup. Our hair is like a tangled net and it traps everything that comes into contact with it.

So true about the twisting fucking up the ends of my hair especially those rubber bands and I already have curly soft ends, I was told that compression styles were best for me rn and my locks look better with a twist out butt my ends are are certain locs shed and fall ouff as untwist and I never understood why…I thought it was because I was washing weekly, but once a week I twist my hair

  • @blkeclipsel2400

    @blkeclipsel2400

    2 жыл бұрын

Wow once a week ? I retwist mine once a month and wash once every two weeks (depending on how active I am) There shouldn't be any shedding with locs. In fact one of the reasons locs become so dense and heavy over time is because it traps all shedded hair. Maybe space the retwists out a little . It's likely that's the reason they are falling out. It's sounds like you're over manipulating your hair from top to bottom - you're not allowing your locs to do their thing. Also ditch the rubber bands. They aren't necessary. Your ends will never entangle if they are compressed with rubber bands and It's also likely contributing to your ends thinning.

Almost a full year into my journey and that first point hit me HARD! I did the exact same thing: went to a loctician, told her something along the lines of me wanting high top locks, and for the actually dreadlock to be on the smaller side. And because of my lack of research and poor communication, she was a bit stumped on what I had in mind. Granted, the section's on the front and top of my head are perfect. But the ones on the back are completely different shapes and sizes - but that's neither here nor there. So I'm in the process of transitioning from this weird like "almost full head of locks" to high top locks and I'm torn on deciding if I just wanna go through with my plan and just have some ugly section's on the back of my head or should I risk splitting some of the ones on the back. The LAST thing that I wanna do is cut or comb out my hair!

So now I will have a “twin Loc” lol but it’s cool, if I would have known ahead of time, I would have easily gave the Loc more hair at the root. I’ve been tempted to do styles and colors because my hairs gotten longer, but yannie the Locologist said the same thing as you about those tight styles and bleaching damging locs so I left it alone. & you just confirmed so I am def staying away (did dye my hair black tho 🤣) I had started of taking so many pictures and I don’t know what happens after month 4 😭,

He’s one of the ones who inspired me to start this. Ain’t no TPlocks without his example. I go to his stories on the regular for inspiration. Also keep in mind he’s got a career, wife and kids. In the realm of KZread it takes a big sacrifice to invest time in these videos and In the grand scheme of all the things going on in our lives sometimes it shouldn’t/ can’t be the priority. I don’t think that means he doesn’t care. I just think it means he needs our support as a black man who’s really out here checking off them boxes bruh! I look at his stories and be like “damn bruh, that’s how you do that shit”.🔥🔥🔥 😂 I just think we gotta support black men no matter what! Dynasty got you too! I wish I had did more research on parting styles before I started my locs. I just assumed that someone who was a stylist who had done locs before would know what’s best for my hair type. I wish that I had: 1. Gone to an actual loctician, and 2. Asked for the diamond parting pattern and possibly smaller parts. I’m self conscious because most people have at least 60 or so locs (full head) and I only have about 50. Maybe because my hair is a little thin and I’ve always had a smaller head, but I still wish I talked these things out before I got started. I did switch to an actual loctician when came time for my first retwist. It was apparent that my former stylist wasn’t as knowledgeable as I thought.

Yo, if you want thicker locs, a simple suggestion is to just select certain dreads that you don't mind losing and clip them out about a good inch away from the root and then combine it with the nearest loc at that root. I felt that way about my dreads not too long ago myself, I started mine really skinny, then years later regretted it, so that was my solution. 👍🏾👍🏾

  • @blkeclipsel2400

Or two other options that don't involve cutting your hair. Option 1: stop retwisting for about two months and continue to wash they will combine naturally. This option strongly depends on the grade of ones hair. I have 4C hair and I started with approximately 75 locs and went down to 43. Option 2: purchase crochet needles and combine them manually. This is the method locticians use when creating wicks. It's more invasive but it works.
