What I Wish I Knew Before Interrailing... | DiscoverEU Guide

🌍 During my Interrail I always booked with hostelworld around 3 months in advance in order to stay at the best hostel :) Here's a link: prf.hn/l/6kb0vX2
After Interrailing twice, I have learned a lot about this style of travel from how to book a train to where I should stay, so i decided to make a series about it all. In this video, I discuss all of the things I wish I knew before I head off one my first Interrail. If you are planning on Interrailing yourself, check out my Interrail guide here:

    I can tell you, I have NEVER felt more tired and exausted in my life than coming home from interrail, so one thing I will recommend is make time for resting during the trip, as much as needed. Take an hour or two to rest everyday, because its really hard work. I came home, woke up the next morning and didnt know where I was in my own bed, took me a few days to reset. Good trip though! Its amazing

    Reservations: Fast-speed trains like tgv, thallays, X2000 etc as well as sleeper trains only have a limited nr seats available for interrailers. In June-September some lines like the Copenhagen-Hamburg train has a mandatory seat reservation rule for every ticket Slow trains always are none-reservation trains, still often you can make a reservation So when you are traveling by train just make sure what category of train you use and what the rules are saying for every country you are visiting.

  • @TangoMikeLima

    @TangoMikeLima

    Nah, you are exaggerating and over-simplifying. It’s only the TGV, Thalys, and Eurostar trains where there is a quota for reservations sold to Interrail pass holders. (I.e., the Interrail quota can sell out even if the train otherwise has lots of seats available.) In the Swedish X2000 you mention there is no quota, as long as there are seats available, you can buy a reservation also with Interrail as a discount. As for high-speed trains, the German ICE trains, that run up to 280 km/h, don’t even require reservations. If you have Interrail as your ticket you can just board a train and sit in any available seat. No extra fees. (But if other passengers have bought reservations for all seats, you will have to stand in a vestibule, or in the restaurant, sipping on coffees or other drinks for hours.)

    Haven't had a chance to Interrail myself yet (bit late to the party as I'm 26), but I've already set my mind to focus on the Germanic side of Central Europe (Germany, Benelux, Austria and Switzerland) for when I do, as virtually every train (including most high-speed trains) within that area don't require reservations so it'll be easy to hop on or off any train at will. There's just some thrill of being able to hop on and off any long-distance intercity train and go wherever I want quickly, like I've experienced doing the All Line Rover (more expensive than Interrail for what you get but you don't have to worry about booking accommodation as you can easily use the pass to return home each day) domestically in the UK last year.

    My experience is that you in fact need a reservations on most nighttrains. But in Germany it is not needed as much. But all other countries you definitely need reservations ex Poland. In Poland and Tscjekkia and Hungary you need to reserve. So reservations is in fact mandatory in these countries and if you don,t have one it can be VERY expensive. In Poland you can get a fine if you don,t have one. I have been interrailing the last 3 decades so I now this. Some statustrains do also have a "zuschlag" you have to pay as well. So going very cheap on interrail is not what is was before. In Sweden and Norway you need res too. The only exeption here is the Øresundståg that you don,t have to reserve, but other swedish trains you neeed one. Quite pricey too.

  • @deh3447

    @deh3447

    I agree. Maybe they were not that strict in checking if you have a (seat) reservation two years ago/ at the time this video was made. We just came back from a trip through Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, we always made the reservations (if interrail said it is compulsory) in advance, within the countries or online (the person at the ticket counter in Spain told us that Spain, Portugal and Poland are the countries where you cannot make the reservations online, which is really a burden...). We often tried showing only the interrail ticket via app when asked for tickets, but a lot of times (in trains where it's needed) they also wanted to see the seat reservation, which we could always luckily show..(eg in Portugal from Lisbon to Faro, or from Barcelona to Paris) Of course you could always try without reservation - the best thing that can happen is that you meet a person that doesnt care. The worst is you cannot get on a desired train or you are forced to get off at the next station and might even have to pay a fine. So I would really encourage people to buy the needed reservation to prevent stress, although I know that the nature of interrail - being spontanous - is a bit lost AND this would of course add extra costs to the interrail ticket

    I find your comment on not booking too many hostels / accommodation in advance very interesting and, whilst I have never been interrailling (I would love to do so in the future), this may be trickier for non-EU nationals like myself - I assume you are also British. I do have permanent residency in France and this helps, as land checks within the Schegen Area are of course not very frequent. However, if a check were to occur, if one were to travel first by plane or from a country outside of the Schegen Area, the authorities may, on top of financial requirements, ask for proof of accommodation. Therefore, it may not be feasible / advisable for non-EU nationals not living in the Schegen Area. Sorry for the long comment, just wanted to add this as a sort of personal footnote 😅 Thank you for the enlightening video and your insight 👍 PS : in France, for the last two summers, the government put in place a TER de France ticket for young people under the age of 26, in order to get people back on trains after Covid. It cost 29€ and you could travel on any regional express train (slower trains), with some exceptions, for either July or August (29€x2 if you wanted the 2 months). I did it both years and it was really fun. Was extremely tired as I wore myself out travelling 6am to 8pm 3 or 4 days per week minimum but it was worth it ! I was living in Metz (Eastern France) at the time and visited most of the Lorraine and Alsace regions, and also went to Britanny and Normandy ! I hope that they will renew it this year. I recommend that you check it out ! Belgian also has a Holiday Youth Pass (around 30€ I think for unlimited travel on regional trains during School Holidays for people under 26) and special tickets for under 26s, that you can use to travel for 6.60€ between any two stations (airports excluded)

I'm having a big issue though cause I didn't get my ID verified within the 1st of September 2022 and even if I submitted the booking form I never received the confirmation email. I wrote several times to the customer service without getting any answers and now they just told me it's too late for verifying my ID so basically my interrail is gone. Do you know how to handle with this kind of situation cause it's really frustrating since I really need to go on that trip as a lifetime experience and I think you know what I mean. BTW great video and I'd like to watch more since they sound really interesting for interrail travels.

    If this is a sleeper train with beds and stuff or a high speed you will definitely need it. In case of the first one there’s just no place for you to stand and for the second one it’s better for your safety. For the other trains that „need reservation” you probably don’t need it but better read the train company policy than be thrown out. But that may also become a part of your adventure!

    Hey🥰 I am 17 Years old and wanna travel europe for two weeks in summer. It might be a bit of a bold move, because I want to travel alone and I would say I am not a very open and extroverted person... But I really wanna meet new people. So my mind really overthinks this and I'm afraid I won't have enough courage to go up to people and really meet and talk to them... I am planning on staying in hostels and also night trains but I don't know if I won't just stand there awkwardly and overthinking it... 🤩 So... Do you or does someone have any tipps or encouraging thoughts specifically about socializing and meeting people in such a situation. I know I should't overthink this but I do haha, because I think I am the kind of persopn who otherwise just ends up staying alone for the whole trip

    i won this year!!!! i will be going with some friends of mine, at around july-august (we are all involved in uni stuff before those dates, the only reason they let us apply to discovereu despite being 19 was that last years was cancelled bc of covid i think?) either way, yts algorithm decided to actually show me a video that i needed for once! i actually wanted to organize myself and check out some hostels we can sleep in, however since we dont have more than 2-3 weeks of time we still dont know when and where to travel! we were thinking something like france-spain-portugal-netherlands as they arent too far away from each other (unlike finland and ireland that i wanted to visit) but i am afraid that we might not be able to enjoy our vacation much if we explore 4 countries in such a short amount of time! do you have any recommendations on how we should manage our time? i dont know if i should ask here but ive always wanted to explore europe and neither me nor my parents have a good income, so i really want to do as much as possible!!

    Depends from where you are traveling. Now i hope next month i can visit more of Europe, and enjoy properly instead of only 3 hours hahhaha, sorry for the long text and my annoyance for my routine but eh, thats why we travel right? routine is boring lmao.

    maybe convince your parents by making an itinerary and book hostels in advance, so they know where you are (kind of). Maybe make some groundrules with them like: check in with everyday (trough text), always sticking together etc. to ease their mind. Maybe do some research on cities, so you can see if you think it would be safe, or to convince your parents they are. Also think ahead of how you will keep your valuables safe and stuff hahaha Also it is a good experience to have and will often make teens more independent, maybe a good argument to convince them hahaha

    Of course! So I got told that the interrail ticket is enough for most trains in Eastern Europe as the trains normally have space. As your interrail gives you the ticket, it’s fine to do this! The only reason you should book a train is when it’s a busy train as this ticket you’ll buy at the station will give you a designated seat :) there seems to be more demand for train seats in France and Italy so I always had to book them. Yes! My first interrail I was only 17😅 I asked hostels before I arrived if I could stay at 17 And most of them said if I got a paper with my parents permission it was fine so I just brought a ‘permission slip’ with me. As for everything else, you’re fine and you won’t get ID’d in most cities

    @@LucyAlllan on the webside it says that you are supposed to reserve and get the reservation tickets via mail home. is there possibility to reserve seats on the spot? to avoid such ahead of time planing?
