I worked as a vending technician and installation expert in the MD/DC metropolitan area for 16yrs. Most of this guy's information is on point. For example, his points about service calls for broken machine issues is on point. I mean, I worked for a company that paid me a full salary just to drive around all day fixing their machines. So yeah, having a working knowledge of how each machine works (models are all different even within the same brand such as Dixie Narco) is key. If you don't know how to fix a machine or someone that can, you're screwed. I used to do calls for other companies that had no service tech and got a min of $50/hr to fix their stuff. The other issues are: Machines are heavy and if you do not have the proper truck (with lock-down slots for moving straps) and lift, dollies (like safe dollies), and other people to help you move the machine in and out of buildings, down hallways, around corners, and on and off the truck, you cant install or remove the machine. Finally, the profit margin is very small. We are talking like less than 4% for a decent size operation. Finally, you have to have a bunch of extra money. Why? Because you need bill validators and coin changers. Not all machines come with those and these pieces of equip. are expensive. Plus, you need coins to fill your coin changers otherwise your machine won't work. You could easily need over $100 in coins in each machine just to get it in operational status. No coins in the changer = no working machine because it will automatically shut itself down because it cant make proper change on sales. This doesn't even mention the fact that in today's world of technology, people want to use credit cards and phones to pay for stuff. Once you start talking about cashless systems that is another ball of wax. You will have to invest in credit card and phone readers and telemetry units and pay a company monthly to collect your digital currency. I left the vending business in 2017 because it is dying.

My time in the vending business was as a route driver for vending companies. I enjoyed the work tremendously and looked forward to going to work every day. I used to fill vending machines in my dreams while sleeping. On the right route, with enough hard work and hustle, the weekly pay can be fantastic. My take-home pay in the early 2000's used to be $850 to $950 per week. I was lucky to get routes that had steady weekly income instead of some routes where the pay fluctuated a lot due to seasonality or whatever. I only left the vending business because I got injured in a truck crash. I should have gone back after I recovered but didn't. The years I was in the business, prices from vending machines were very reasonable -- 65 cent candy bars, 50 cent bags of chips, 75 cent cans of soda, 50 cent cartons of milk, fresh sandwiches for $2.50 and fresh bagels for 70 cents. Today, the prices of vending machines are so high as to be embarrassing -- I would be ashamed of trying to peddle candy bars for $1.50 and bottled drinks for $2.50. I was in the business long enough to know how to do all the minor fixes and repairs myself, so any vending mechanics that covered my route loved me -- I only ever called in serious service calls. I was so good at filling machines that customer refund requests were less than $2.00 a week for my entire route and because of this, my company never lost an account because I did a poor job and actually was successful at signing many major locations to 5 year contracts instead of 1 or 2 year agreements. I was NOT the best vending route driver out there -- I broke many company rules and was regularly in trouble. But, most of my rule breaking was overlooked since the amount of money I brought in each week only increased month to month. On my last route, I was consistently the second most profitable driver out of over 60 other route drivers at that company location. The trend now is instead of banks of 10 or 12 vending machines, is called Micro-markets with products in unlocked coolers and open shelves full of products and one single payment kiosk that collects the money due all at one time. This means customers only have to make ONE payment after selecting their products and it means no more separate machines with their own coin mechs and bill acceptors to keep in working order. So, it's a better shopping experience for customers, but it all comes at higher prices for products (to cover shrinkage and theft). And if that ONE payment kiosk fails, nobody can buy anything.

There is no way to lose with vending when your location is thriving and you have the right merchandise retailer. There no way to avoid profit. I have a snack shop without the machines in a thriving location. candy bars, chips, sodas (bottles/cans), pickles, cookies (oreos vanilla/chocolate, famous amos chocolate chip) other candy. There's big profit in this business. Like I said, having the right location and the right discount retailer. You can't lose.

The ways to improve vending machine sales is to place them in areas that make your products easily accessible to the people who need them. Since the newest machines will offer use of Apple Pay and Android Pay, all you need to have is your phone, or just your credit/debit card. Another consideration when looking for ways to improve vending machine sales is to place them in areas that make your products easily accessible to the people who need them. Schools, malls, airport lounges, bus stations and subway platforms are high traffic areas that are prime locations for vending machines.

Wow, I've done that. Didn't have the large machines, but the gumball types. My best location was an ACE Hardware. Yes, it can be "passive" when they don't need constant attention.

Choose secure locations. Tighten up your marketing so locations call you, and you don't have to pay commissions; they just want your service.

Hey Reyes, I want to thank you. You and Jaime Ibanez helped inspire me to buy an existing route of 6 locations for $17k that has 13 machines in total. Already making money and the seller carried $14k of the sale as a loan! You were a great source of knowledge!!

@@RicheousKiller surprisingly I found this on craigslist, but I've also seen a few on Facebook marketplace. Also you can find them on buybizsell and I think routesforsale but not as frequently or as profitable because those are sold a little more professionally. Hope this helps man!

A couple of things never lay a soda machine on its side or back to deliver it deliver it upright if you don’t have a pickup with a lift or sides rent one or hire professional vending machine movers to do the back breaking job! Also make sure that they are insured because there will be accidents such as gouged walls or messed up carpeting or wood flooring. If you can’t afford movers and have to deliver it laying down make sure you don’t plug the machine in until it stands upright as long as it was on its side this allows the refrigerant and oil to settle back you don’t want the oil and the refrigerant to mix! Never deliver a machine of any kind fully or even partially loaded you are asking for trouble especially with a soda machine! I’m taking from experience of 30+ years of working for Green and White and Red White and Blue and self employed with snack route!

You know how in Japan they got vending machines everywhere and even have a restaurant just filled with vending machines. I wonder you ever think instead of looking for locations, you stock up on one location and make it a tourist attraction via social media. Have one spot be the cornerstone of unique machines that let people shop and eat with no one but machines.

1.In regards to startup cost, a vending machine has a low startup cost. 2. It's about location primarily, and what's necessarily to meet the demand. 3. How much labor and time are required to maintain it. 4. How much commission do you have to pay to maintain the location
