what I wish I'd known about art as a beginner

Today we are unpacking two things: things I had to learn the hard way as a beginner artist; and my awesome magic books. There are so many misconceptions about artists, what it takes to make things, what kind of lifestyle or skillset you need to have...
And these are all USELESS notions that keep us from creating. They fool us into thinking that we're not the right type of person to create; that it would be presumptuous of us to try our hand at art; that we aren't talented enough to even give it a try.
To that I say: CODSWALLOP! Pick up the thing! Nothing bad can happen to you!!
Anyway - I'm getting carried away writing this description. This video is about 6 things I wish I had known as a beginner artist. I hope that you find these useful and share your opinions in the comments.

Just an echo about what your said at 3:53 about the fact of considering oneself a "beginner artist" even thought one is a professional could be a way to emphasize oue creative practise forever testing and exploring things.. What you said remind me of a podcast I'd just listened to called "Feel the fear and do it anyway with Johanna Henley" by the Creative Boom. Johanna Henley, who can easily call herself an professional artist, stressed the same point and emphasized the cultural root that may occur here. In Europe and particularly in France, an artist at their 40s is still considered a " beginner" in the professional field and at the same is recongnized as a professional. She didn't say why, maybe it's the weight of the "Grandmaster" narrative in European history of art or something, but what she said is that it enabled her to thrive in her practice, because she would always feel as a"forever in progress artist" and thus not having to stop evolving, stop experimenting.. she would still doubt herself but still discover herself at the same time, and it fuels her. I'm not someone that likes too much being a floaty person, seldomly touching ground and feeling the urge to fly again, whether there is ground or not, but, I can get that this feeling of doubting our capabilities or our status could be somehow a powerful lift in a practice, specially if it not wanted from you to own this status in a fixed way anyway...

That's so interesting, thank you for sharing! It's kind of crazy to see how this mentality applies even to middle aged professionals. I suppose it's not particularly helpful to think about capacity (you could be a master in one subsection of art and a beginner in another). What's more interesting is whether you keep exploring new things :)
