What I’m Working On & Letting Go Of in 2024 ✨ + intentions & failures

Although I don’t set New Year resolutions anymore I find the new year a great opportunity to reflect on what’s been and what is yet to come. There are some things I’d like to continue working on or start working on as a result of learning more about myself, and then there are some things I would like to let go of, or stop trying.
Learning new things gives us the opportunity to reset or refocus to make sure we’re on the path we’ve chosen. And on a path that makes us happy. One that we choose for ourselves, that brings us happiness.
This year I’m practicing effective communication and interpersonal skills such as communicating my needs and setting healthy boundaries. I’ve learnt a lot about this from DBT, a more modern version of CBT, but that I much prefer. DBT offers practical tips that are especially useful if you want to change your behaviour and improve your interactions with the world. It’s also especially beneficial for people with autism since it gives us practical tools in how to successfully cope in a world not always suited for us!
I’m also working on my financial stability. My dream is not to become a billionaire, but to achieve a financial stability that is enough for me and my family. Enough to live calmly, with less stress, and always - less consumerism.
I’m working on being present and mindful in my life, spending less time in front of screens and more times with my friends. Maybe even making some new friends this year! I’m also reminding myself of the importance to follow our dreams and honour the child within.
The more practical things I’m working on is figuring out how to take care of myself whilst being in a relationships, and regulating my emotions and trauma with the help of nervous system regulation practices such as breath work, meditation, touch and movement.
The things I’m letting go of are things like friendships that’ve come to an end, material desires (I do this one every year, it’s a good reminder), unkind family members and the feeling of not being my true authentic self at work.
I don’t know if you feel the same way, but I really struggle with letting my personality exist (!) when I’m in a professional setting. Even though I’m a freelancer and work from home, I have found it difficult to express my true self in conversations with other employees or bosses, so that’s something I’m really excited to work on this year - especially thanks to the practical tips from DBT.
Here are all the resources I’ve been using, and will continue to use, because I find them so darn good!

Regarding the "not missing life" - I'd like to share my personal turning point. I realised the important part is "not missing out on MY life" not life in general. I missed out the most when I rather subconciously tried to do things in a society-approved way. As in - always improve, do certain things that everyone's supposed to love... no. MY life. Work is and always will be a part of my life, so I created a work life that's meaningful and that I can be present with. I'm not a big going out, partying and all that person, I like sitting at home reading and yes, studying. So I'm not missing out anything when once again I found some other degree I'm interested in, I'm doing something that gives MY life meaning even if the rest of the world thinks I'm missing out... I no longer feel like I'm missing out - except those few instances when I give in to other's perspective on fun - it's rather enjoyable now

You are such an incredible person! Thank you so much for being you! I honestly didn't know females could be so amazing and actually work on themselves and I know that sounds horrible but, in America it's extremely rare. I definitely want to visit Sweden now. If people are really as awesome as you there then that might be where I should live. Never stop working on yourself!

Hej! Thanks for sharing so much from your heart! I can totally relate to "missing myself"... I have always heard that one has to make the time, but it seems to be something that next to impossible, most of the time. Usually because of others needing/wanting something of me. Usually they need a hand or a favor, not in a bad way... stay strong!

Hi Saga! Thank you for sharing your thoughts - I have noted some good insights for myself to think about. The part about behavior within the work environment especially resonated with me, you were able to formulate exactly what I’m thinking about. I often feel like any unscheduled meeting request from my boss means bad news for me, and I also sometimes think that I am misunderstood and this happens precisely because I seem to “freeze” when communicating and cannot express myself correctly. I think it’s a matter of overthinking and I really want to treat work as a part of my life more simply. I think the most important thing that I achieved in 2023 was the ability to enjoy simple activities more (cooking, walking, etc.), and also to track anxious thoughts that return again and again and try to take the actions necessary to get rid of these thoughts as soon as possible - respond to a message that causes anxiety/make an appointment with a doctor/make an important call etc I wish you as little stress and as many joyful moments as possible in 2024, your videos gave me a lot of good thoughts, ideas and peace of mind last year and I hope you will always have inspiration for new ones

Hi, thank you so much! :) I do that and I find it so stressful! And work is part of our life so that's a great insight. I love that! I practice that too, but as you say, it's really to still have anxious thoughts. I quite like the idea of "thought stopping" and also meditation or changing my enviornment. I wish the same to you and such a wonderful year

Hi Saga! I'm finally getting around to trying to catch up with much, and so doing some binge watching of my favorite KZreadrs, and you being right at the tippy top of that list, well, beginning here now is a start to getting caught up. Thank you for all your sage words of wisdom, which I have told you before always astound me being that you are not yet even 30 years old! It's funny that I'm twice your age, and yet, some of the things you have to say are great reminders, even for me, as we set off on this adventurous journey of a new year before us. I hope yours will be blessed greatly, and looking forward to seeing what you have to say and show about being back home in Sweden, that when I can spend a little more time catching up...for now, sending lots of love! 💙💖💛

Hello Saga, A few things resonated in your wonderful update. In terms of missing out on life, I have the same concern. For me the key is to find meaningful work which goes with the grain of this. I plan to make some changes in 2024 in this respect. On breathing, I’ve not found a better description in my own practice than that to Thich Nhat Hanh. There are some of his old talks on Apple Podcasts if you’re interested. I hope to go to Plum Village one day. I also lost someone who I considered a close friend in 2023. It does rather underscore that it is easy to see the wisdom in realising that things have their endings, but very hard at times to inhabit it, isn’t it? I didn’t make the mistake I have made in the past of trying to hold onto something that has gone (which is an improvement). But I ended up beating myself up about it (even though it wasn’t my fault), which shows I have a long spiritual path to walk. Thanks as ever for your thoughts.

Hi Alec, it's so wonderful to hear that I'm not alone in this concern... Meaningful work is so important for this, I agree. Have you heard of 80,000 hours? They're mission is to help people find meaningful work since that is where we spend sooo much of our time. I'm hoping to work less and live on a smaller budget next year, and find meaningful time with animals and nature. My husband just downloaded Plum Village, so I will have to take a look! It sure does! I think I did beat myself up quite a bit as well, which ultimately lead to the new insight. But exactly, there is still some to go!

Hi Saga, just wanted to say that I really enjoy your videos, I learn something from every one of them! One of the things I've been wondering is how you treat minor health issues such as minor burns, cuts, scraps, headaches/earaches, colds/sore throats etc., most people have many, many products purchased from drug stores in their medicine cabinets and if you have more natural remedies I'm hoping you may consider doing a video to cover that topic :).

Hi Saga thanks for your honesty in talking about both success and failure. At retirement age I suddenly feel I am not there yet in my life. I did not realise at the time how much work was taking over, sometimes 12 hours a day. Perhaps I should have taken more time out for family and my own personal development. I would urge viewers to take stock of their lives earlier on, take a break or sabbatical if the opportunity arises. Pausing work for a while may not be such a financial risk as it appears. Thanks again Saga and I will be interested in following you both to Sweden - a country and people that I love.
