Clover makes a took that is called the "yarn cutting pendant" that has an enclosed blade. looks like a necklace pendant you could for sure take that on a plane! Best way to figure out an unknown fiber is the burn test. Wool is naturally flame retardant (it does not burn easily) so if it is does not burn well, smells like burning hair, and leaves a crushable residue its likely 100% wool. Nylon is a synthetic so if there is any in there it will leave behind a plastic-y residue like a hard plastic bead that is difficult to crush.

Ahh ok I tried out the burn test! It definitely had that smell and left a residue so I think I’m safe! So helpful - thank you so much!

for the "unknown" yarn (the blue one without the label) you could add a nylon sewing thread in the same-ish color when knitting the toes and heals. That should be enough as a re-enforcement and you have a sort of insurance even if the yarn is 100% wool.

Picking up stitches is my least favorite part of any project. Can’t wait to use a crochet hook next time and see if that makes the process more enjoyable! Thanks for the tip!

The ttthin sweater is so good!! You could do magic loop with just one needle if you're comfortable with that, that's what I would do :) Last year I worked on my Friday tee during my holiday which was perfect: engaging but memorizable and on tiny needles as well. I think you've inspired me to make the ttthin sweater this year!!

Ooo friday tee is such a good option! Broken rib keeps things interesting and also a small project

i travel a lot, probably take about 20 flights a year and have never had issues with my needles or eyebrow scissors. hope that helps you feel more confident & comfortable taking what you need :)

Socks are great travel projects! I think the Pi Cami would also work…less yarn, no extra needles. Your scissors should be fine. Most airports allow 1-2” of actual cutting blade. I would visit the site of each airport you’ll be traveling through to check their requirements for scissors, needles, etc. Have an awesome time😊

Dental floss makes a good stitch holder or life line for fingering wt yarn in addition to the cutter. Safe travels and I know you will have fun

I just got the ttthin sweater pattern during wool and beyond’s brithday sale! I should have some oenling yarn leftover so I’m thinking maybe I cast it on at home as the yarn would be perfect for it

For scissors- I bought the Sun-Star Stickyle Mini Scissors when I lived in Asia. They are perfect for travel. You could also check out Muji - they have scissors that look like a pen so would probably not cause problems when travelling.

Have your project on interchangeable needles and with stitch stoppers . If they confiscate the needles you then can just detach the needles and leave your project on the cable. I have knitted on a Musselburg hat while travelling and also the inclination shawl of Andrea Mowry. Simple socks are a great idea too.

I am dying to make the ttthin sweater, but I just haven’t been able to work up the courage for a fingering weight sweater yet! I know you would need to bring more needles, but I’ve heard they don’t care so much about the smaller ones as a big chunky needle. So selfishly, that’s my vote haha 😅

Haha that’s fair! I’ve only travelled with wooden needles so bringing metal ones kinda scare me a bit but I feel like 2.25 mm are not very threatening 😂

Great video, I love that you talk about which kind of projects you take. To see if fabric is synthetic or not, you can burn a small piece on a plate. If it completely burns up, it's natural fibre. If it's synthetic, it kind of melts and leaves a residue. I guess this could work to check if your yarn has nylon in it too. You could check with a sock yarn to see if the nylon content is enough to be visible.

I don’t know if this works for all yarns, but if I try to break a sock yarn with nylon with just my hands it’s pretty tough and doesn’t want to break, whereas a just merino yarn breaks easily. Even if it was a yarn without nylon and it was hard to break that might mean it’s durable enough for socks, but I’ve never tried that! Hope that helps😊

Waittttt I’m going to try this asap! I definitely noticed that when I tried to break my Lang Jawoll yarn with my hands for my shorty sock yesterday haha

I bring kids scissors when I fly, they have a short blade and rounded tips so they are as unassuming as possible. Small nail clippers can work as well!

Ooo ok good to know! I’ve had no problems with my 3inch scissors on Air Canada flights but since I’m flying with a few different providers and airports, I don’t want to take the risk haha

I love how you got into sock yarn *evil laugh* I have a couple flights coming up and I think I might cast-on a Musselburgh and bring a more interesting sock. Lots of car trips and camping this summer so those can have sweaters or other garments when I'm "navigating" 😂

I brought an Oslo hat on my last trip! It did feel a bit weird to be knitting on a hat when it was 33C outside 😂 but it is a great portable project

I love the dental floss tip! Fwiw, I only carry wooden/bamboo needles on flights, they seem more innocuous.

Sadly all my >3.00 mm needle tips are metal! But I totally agree - the wooden ones seem less alarming 😂

This probably isn’t news to you (I assume you’ve researched) but the Royal Palace and Floating Market tours in Bangkok are really cool! I hope you’ll take pictures! I was there in January 2020 just before the pandemic. Have fun!!

Another tip for cutting yarn in a not so suspicious way is by using nail clippers🤭 a bit of an odd one but it still works well

For travel I have taken some of Purl SoHo’s dish towels (they won’t work for the yarns you’ve mentioned - but something to think about for the future). Patterns are easy to memorize and you can put the project down and pick it back up with no worry about losing your place.

I would pick the sweater instead of the wrap top! I’ve knitted the top, but the fit is not great: it falls down a lot and is hard to wrap a bit tighter around your body as the fabric is so stretchy. Also the grafting in the back to connect the two pieces just doesn’t look that nice
