ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
Here's how we feed pellet to achieve good health in our rabbits. We go over our methods on feeding kits, juniors, bucks does and pregnant and nursing does. This video is for breeding and farming rabbits and doesn't pertain to house rabbits. I wanted to list some information on hay and greens to feed your rabbits. You can't over due the hay or feed too much fiber. It's a good thing to always try to supply some hay for your rabbits to munch on.
I strongly urge you to stick to pellet and only feed greens once in a while until you get used to your rabbits and only then make gradual changes so your rabbits don't suffer any digestive problems.

I grew up on a farm where rabbits were a staple of our diet. We never fed them pellets as that was something rich people bought. They ate what we grew or foraged. Didn't have health problems or death problems.

Thanks for sharing! You can save money by feeding yourself but like many things you give up for what you get. I can assure you I’m not rich and I feed pellets. We still average approximately a dollar a pound. If you don’t mind me asking when feeding forage what was your rabbits level of productivity? How many kits to a litter and how many litters per year? We’ll be uploading several videos this year to show folks how to feed rabbits without using pellet. Stay tuned for that! Thanks for watching!

@@TheRabbitryCenter If you don't mind me asking, are you trying to push your rabbits to the absolute fastest production and profit? In that case, MAYBE store-bought feed as the bulk of their diet is the best way to go. After reading and watching dozens of hours of videos and articles, I remain thus far unconvinced about that. Especially considering that seven months ago when you made that comment about "a dollar per pound", pellets and everything else were remarkably less expensive than they are now. If a person like me is willing to "sacrifice" a percentage of speed in growth for the sake of not relying on store-bought feed.... well, I'm continuing to seek more information and gather more experience on that topic. Rabbits are not pets to me. Nor are they a commercial endeavor. They're a survival/off-the-grid/food security/independence/homesteader food source. Personally, I have enough space to raise more rabbits a little more slowly and still get what I need from them, without pushing them to the absolute maximum production. And I have the space and skills to grow food for those rabbits. If I have to buy pellets all the time... that ain't "off-the-grid" or "self-sufficient" at all. I'd still be a slave to corporations and supply chain. And I have little to no confidence in either. See where I'm going with all that?

We are starting to grow oat grass sincecwe couldn't find it in dry bales. Bit learning curve going on, but we love raising the rabbits. Maybe after we get more confident we'll consider rabbits for selling. But not yet.

I feed rabbits in a outdoor pen that has no floor. I move it every day for fresh white clover and grass. But they also have pellet as well. They do seem to grow slower. However these are sold as breeding stock and pets. The meat rabbits get pellet mostly with a little oat and sunflower seeds. They are not on wire. They are on a concrete floor with wood chips. Sun light can inter the pen at different times of the day. I also don’t use the sip waters. A glass dish that’s cleaned every day.

I understand and completely hear you on that. I just didn't want to plug a certain brand but rather share the importance of reading the labeling to ensure the 16% protein level is present. This will provide the high fiber percentage your rabbits need to help prevent digestive problems. Some ingredients vary for product to product but they are all pretty good. One things for sure if all you ever give a rabbit is a 16% protein pellet they are sure to do well.

I stopped giving our rabbits pellets because it made their urine stink and they developed internal fat around their organs and neck as they aged. They also wasted too much by digging in their feeders. Ironically I still give a small amount of rabbit pellets to my chickens in winter because the garden has nearly no greens. When we had rabbits, we would buy alfalfa, hay and oat bales (2:1:1). As you mentioned, it's really important that the bales are kept dry and have no mould The rabbits were fed before our breakfast and before our dinner. Dry food was 90% and green food 10% by volumn. We did supliment with amaranth leaves, orange juice peelings ( they would eat out the left over orange), grape leaves, oat and wheat grass, clover, papaya peel, carrot tops, and parsley. They even ate dried gum leaves that would fall into their cages. Too much cabbage gives them gas and they can die of twisted intestines. Coriander can stop them breathing. If you go for pellets, ensure that they don't contain GMO alfalfa, GMO soy or seed oils. A good pellet is hard to access in my area.

This video made me feel better about my process. I have always fed only pellets and occasionally hay. I didn't know rabbits could eat oats. But what is the difference between oats and oatmeal? Where do you get oats?

  • @TheRabbitryCenter

    @TheRabbitryCenter

    4 жыл бұрын

Sure thing. Oats have many health benefits. Oats are fiber-rich whole grains and a good source of protein and packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, Oats are sold in rolled, crushed or steel-cut form. Instant oats/oatmeal is the most highly processed kind. The oats I buy come in a 50 lb. bag from a feed store. Race horse oats or rolled oats even Whole oats they're all good. We always have oats around because we feed the chickens a 1/4 cup daily to help keep them keep laying. Our rabbits eat oats in a separate dish or on a board away from the feeder. Sometimes I'll put them on one side of the feeder if I don't notice them pawing pellet out to get to the oats. Oats help the young grow providing more calories and helps mom with her milk production. It's something that they rabbits digest well and gives them a boost. You can feed oatmeal but it's sold in small quantities and is the most expensive way to buy them.

Ask all the questions you’d like On most bags you’ll read in the labeling that it’s approximately .5 ounces for every pound of rabbit If you have a medium breed rabbit like a Rex you’ll feed approximately 2/3 of a cup a day in the summer and 1cup of pellet n the winter. This way they can burn a few more calories to stay warm.

I’m almost out of the first bag. For my new rabbits they are on 100% producers pride and my rabbits I’ve had are on 75% old food and 25% producers pride. They also get unlimited Timothy hay. Our rabbits get more scraps but they are also in a pen.. Our boys are in 2 types of shelters. 8' and 4' shelters x 2'. Some boys share 8' with a divider between so they are 4' I meant. They will all be in their own 8' shelters this year. With that extra room the scraps arent an issue. They are always running around etc so they burn it. I'd say the biggest thing never ever to feed rabbits is corn because those corn coating is like Russian roulette they pass it sometimes other times it blocks their digestive track. Like all creatures common sense is a must. If your rabbit is caged it cant burn the calories so keep treats down and let them out to get some room often.

@@TheRabbitryCenter sorry if it seemed contradictory I just wanted people to see it's a common sense thing if a rabbit cant burn the calories it's going to get ill in the wild they dont get over weight they are running to find food, running from predators and have tons of space. Obesity isnt exactly an option for them so it makes sense in cages they need to be regulated on what they eat to stay healthy. Most of the things people are saying about raising animals just seems common sense. It's awesome you are sharing but it's a bit unfortunate that it has to be said because people dont look at the big picture often enough these days unfortunately. People trying to make cats vegan, or feeding tons of candy or even just too many treats to their bunnies, it's just people thinking because we eat lots of junk food and dont die quickly from it that any animals diet is a choice. Rabbits are high fiber low sugars diet, cats are strict carnivores so it's one of those things you'd think would be common sense just isnt they think they can adapt them to whatever we want them to eat so its convenient for us. We are omnivores though and our bodies can handle a bit more abuse than animals meant to be on a strict diet. I love your videos thanks for sharing them.

Timothy hay is great. You made a good point that the pellet has alfalfa in it already. But any orchard or horse hay will be very beneficial to them you don't necessarily have to feed timothy which is a high quality hay that they'd enjoy.

  • @TheRabbitryCenter

O.k. this is going to be kind of a loaded answer. I use Buckeye rabbit pellet but there are several good brands. The important thing is to look at the levels of ingredients. I recommend a pellet that has a 16% level of protein which has a high fiber percentage. This will be a good pellet for all ages of rabbit. Also it's sufficient for a Mama rabbit to nurse a litter if needed. Before you buy just take a look at the labeling. Find the protein level on the back. If it isn't listed its most likely a 12-15% protein level which won't be as good. As far as how much feed to give. All rabbits have different appetites. Be sure to watch the feeder bowl. You may need to add more pellet if your rabbit is bony. If you cage a smaller rabbit with a bigger rabbit the smaller rabbit may not get first dibs on eating. Pet your rabbit and make sure your smaller rabbit isn't too bony. You'll know if you have to increase the portion of pellet. This may not sound like a lot but a general guideline for a healthy medium sized rabbit breed may consume as little as 5 ounces of pellet a day. But when it's cold, feed more when it's hot, feed less. You'll always have to look at the feeder bowl and calibrate a little. You don't want to to keep piling on pellet and let it get stale. Add as much pellet as you think they'll eat in a day.

Love your videos and knowledge...especially because it comes from my original home-state of Michigan! I realize that quality greens are a scarcity in sandy soil with a limited growing season in Michigan, but in St. Louis, weeds such as the purple dead nettle survive ALL year long under the snow, and the adults AND 4 week-old kits thrive on the local weeds packed with vitamin D!!! Feed your bunnies local weeds and reduce the price of your feeds!!! With the local weed diet AND pellet, our doe's pump out 8 kitts every time.

Personally i don't give my rabbits anything green until they are 8 weeks old. By so doing I greatly minimize chances of them suffering from diarrhea or bloated tummies. I also wean my bunnies at the age of 8 weeks and by then most of them will be weighing 2.1kg to 2.3kg. I feed them hay and pellets only until they reach 8 weeks. After that I start giving them greens, including fresh grass and vegetable leaves but in very small quantities for about a month. As for bigger rabbits, i give them mainly pellets and also hay as something to nibble on whenever they feel like chewing something. I should also mention that rabbits that feed on pellets mainly taste much nicer than rabbits that eat greens and hay mainly.

Some folks like to feed all sorts of things that provide nutrients. I try to keep things as simple as I can by choosing a 16 percent protein pellet and supplementing with seeds and oats with juniors and nursing moms If you enjoy growing fodder I say go for it. It certainly will provide nutrients. But I've been told it takes some trial and error getting your system down.

I want to start by saying I think you should feed your rabbits how ever you want. I personally don't feed rabbits under 4 months any clover or grass or treats or anything that hasn't had time to dry just like hay is dry. Now I know that's boring but it's good for their developing gut. You can'tI feed a lot of hay. You can't over do the hay. It keeps their digestion dry and avoids any problems. That said you can feed your rabbits grass and see how it goes but I would use tractors for the chickens or rabbits older than 4 months.

By petting your rabbit and running your hand over it's back you can feel it's bones and body which will tell you if you need to feed more. If your bucks get sluggish and lose their appetite for love ( You'll see this when breeding)I'd feed a little less.

If they are for family use and not meat give 80% hay 15%veggies and 5%treats and if you give pellets (which I personally would never use) give a 1/4 cup for every 4-5 pounds and if they are smaller give 1/8 cup pellets, and also don't use water bottles use ceramic water dishes as they drink as much as a small dog. Most important do not use small cages as they need at least 4 ft by 2 ft per rabbit but i personally would recommend at least 4 ft by 4 ft. And make sure they are not wire bottom or hard floor as this can cause sore hocks. You should also make sure whoever you are giving them to knows how to care for them and will get them fixed.

  • @TheRabbitryCenter

    @TheRabbitryCenter

    4 жыл бұрын

If I notice there's still pellet in there I feed less. 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup in the evening for Medium sized Rabbits(10-12 lbs.). Pregnant doe's will stay on that same diet until the day she kindles. Once she gives birth. I'll double her pellet portions. 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the evening. when the kits get bigger I'll feed approximately 3 cups of feed in the morning and 3 cups in the evening. I'll feed less if they don't eat it all. If they're hungry cage door stalkers when I walk up I'll feed a little more. You'll learn to gauge this over time. I'll rebreed Mama when the kits are 4 weeks old and remove her when she's 2 weeks pregnant and return her to the 1 cup a day diet until she kindles again. All rabbits bucks and doe's have the same diet. Once the kits reach 12 weeks they start getting 1 cup a day.

Excellent video.Thank you very much. I have rabbit and I just learn that I made a lot of things not correctly. My male rabbit is too fat. Can we reduce the feeding in order to get it on the right track again and some female also are too big can we do the same? You spoke about the storage, is it possible to see what are your storage container for the pellet or direct me to your video if you have any in order to see the kind of container please. Can we store the pellet in the container for some years like 3 years? thank you so much for your video

absolutely, feed a little less until they reach the desired weight you can use 5 gallon bucket or if chipmunks or any other pests try to get your feed use galvanized cans- amzn.to/2XFCVaY The food will stay dry and fresh for long periods of time in these containers but all pellets have an expiration time. You'd have to see how long your feed stays fresh given your circumstances and environment. You might want to buy only what you'll feed in any given season. More in the winter less in the summer.

Hiya I have an experienced proven buck who has had two litters we left him one of our does for 3 weeks and then seperewted them and then 3 days later after being seperewted we tried to breed him with 2 of our other foes who he hasn’t been with and he showed no interest and didn’t try to mount them or breeed them what should I do

I keep my bucks on one side of the rabbitry and the does on the other. My bucks only breed one doe every other day to keep his fertility high. I take the doe to the buck and leave them in for a few minutes. It only takes a few minutes to realize if the female rabbit will be lifting for the buck or not today. If she lifts I keep the buck in the cage for 30 minutes and then remove him. If she doesn't lift then I make sure I don't feed her more than a cup of pellet a day even a little less. I start feeding her black oil seeds daily just a punch. I keep trying with her and a buck every few days. If he doesn't show interest he's probably tired and being lazy so now he goes on a strict 1/3 cup of pellet in the morning and 1/3 cup of pellet in the evening. He'll get back to his athletic self and start breeding the way he should. You can try cage swapping for 24 hour letting them run in a chicken coop or fenced in safe area. lastly you can try a different or older buck

When I say no greens I mean baby rabbits you’ll have all the Time in the world to feed your rabbit greens when they’re older but when feeding young rabbits this can make them sick and even kill them. Even with older rabbits greens have a lot of water in them and can cause diarrhea if you experience that stick to pellet and Hay which is high in fiber until things return to normal. When Rabbits are born in the wild the litter is buried mama rabbit visits only to nurse her young and then she will re-bury the nest she is bred within a day or two of having the litter and abandons that litter approximately 3 1/2 weeks to have her next litter the average lifespan of a wild rabbit is two years Tractors-tractors are a terrific way to keep rabbits especially if you enjoy watching them. Things will usually go well for a few years but they’re not ideal for a rabbit production -some challenges you may face are: you don’t want your rabbits battling also they can tunnel out and escape with open bottoms and will easily be killed-they don’t have the survival skills and will be easy prey-when eating a lot of grass off the ground sharing with other rabbits that can present some problems with parasites. If Rabbits are escaping that’s no good and rabbits are lacking a balanced diet -eventually the health of the herd can diminish eating too much grass and not enough of the right essential nutrients will cause small litters and slow grow outs.

@@TheRabbitryCenter oh my gosh thank you so much for all the info! I should have been more clear with you. All my rabbits are caged. I have my 1st 2 litters that I will growing out for meat. Theyt are about 2wks I would have to look at my calendar to b exact but their eyes are open and just started coming in and out of box a few days ago. I have a litter of 10 and 7. I have California New Zealand and Silver fox does with 2 pedigreed bucks, a lilac silver fox and a Cali 10 total adults. I live in central MO. I was looking forward to raising the grow outs in tractors. for several reasons really, cut cost if I'm feeding nongmo organic pellets, grassfed meat is in high demand right now, fertizing the grass, and the videos I have seen on it make it look easy. So if I am moving to a tracter when is t safe to do that and can that still happen in winter? Thanks again so much for helping me. I would also like to order ur butcher device what do u call it again? Whats the best way to do that?

So if a doe wasn't actually pregnant, and now it's time to lose weight, how to you do that? For PMR fed dogs, we calculate the food they should have at their ideal weight, and feed according to target instead of their fatty weight. Same for rabbits?

I keep my all my rabbits on a strict diet no more than one cup of pellet a day pregnant or not ) (gaining weight during pregnancy will cause pregnancy problems for your female rabbits)the day she kindles I double her feed portions to 2 cups a day Giving birth and nursing her dose will greatly reduce her weight And she’ll need more calories to produce milk and regain her weight If she never kindles then she should never be on a higher feed portion Stick to a one cup a day diet and your rabbit will not be overweight if your rabbit is overweight cut back the food portions slightly I always use a half cup scoop when feeding rabbits to make things easy

just cut back on the pellet a bit. I'd explain to your mom about sore hocks and over feeding a rabbit can cause problems. Maybe that way she can understand why she should cut back on the treats.

I'd just go to your local feed store and purchase rabbit feed that's 16% protein. It should be on the labeling. If it's not it's most likely 12-13%. Make sure it reads 16%. This is sufficient for kits, growing rabbits, adults and nursing mama rabbits.

Can anyone help me to find a u-tube channel where folks feed rabbits everything BUT pellets? I want information about raising rabbits the way God planned. I live in Central America where pellets are very expensive but we have greens growing all year.

I’ll let you know if I find one. I hear you about pellet prices its expensive and it feels like it keeps climbing faster than it should. There’s all sorts of ways to raise rabbits and of course you’ll experience different results based on how you raise them and what you feed them. You can raise your rabbits on Hay and weeds from the garden and over the winter you can feed dried nutritious greens from your garden that’s stored in a dry place. Rabbit Raisers used to have to gather and grow a lot in order to supply the nutrition needed for intense breeding. If you’re shooting for big litters fresh water and nutrition is key. Pellet is an expensive convenience but helps with that immensely. Here’s a video that shows what other feed we feed besides pellet kzread.info/dash/bejne/loiLqKqFksucmNY.html
