One day I was walking in Versailles and saw a mom pick up her son from school. As they walked home together, she pulled out a baguette for her son. She then unwrapped a chocolate bar and slid it into the baguette making a chocolate sandwich. After buying some warm baguettes and chocolate bars, I decided to give it a try. Oh my goodness! Game changer.

This channel is awesome. I've never seen anybody move to a different side of the world to explore different cuisines and share them with everybody. The creativity is also great - not just making the same old dishes as everybody else, but coming up with completely new ones with unique spins towards that culture.
What we often do in Eastern France with left-over baguettes or bread is Flammenkueche/tarte flambée (thick cream, onions, lard) version instead of going for pizza style. You can also make Clafoutis (even with super dry, old bread).

You're right about Jambon beurre needing acidity, cornichons are often added to it in France
tbh "la baguette classique" is not always worse than the "tradition" , its definitely less tasty on its own but it has other qualities like the fact that the crust is less thick and the overall bread is more "soft" , it makes it easier to eat it, especially as a sandwich or hotdog, you really don't want to make a hot dog with a tradition because the thick crust just gets in the way that's my humble (french) opinion

Try a jambon brie sandwich, too. Instead of butter, spread brie on both halves of the sandwich. Incredible. Also bread pudding with cubed baguette!
As a french, I feel like there isn't enough butter in your jambon beurre but that's just me. You could also try different sort of butter if you're not too afraid of salt (there is already salt in the jambon and in the baguette afterall) About the baguette tradition: First, what you described is true for a majority of chains/franchise bakery affiliated with Banette, Marie Blachère or Au Pain de mon Grand-Père. Do try an independent artisan sometimes. Their bread is incredible. the simple baguette is way better and they won't get hard as fast as chains/franchise's one. Second, it also depends on territory in France. I was initially from Britany and I can tell you even if you order a tradition, it's going to be subpar compared to a normal baguette in other regions and be hard as bricks in 36h. The bread is staler in Brittany, I don't know why. I moved to Strasbourg and the normal baguette is way tastier than any tradition I ate in Rennes.

The difference in those baguettes across the country is mostly due to the flour being different Mainly because of the ground minerals and stuff being different depending on the region It's also why even if you taste a good baguette in an other country it will be different (not worse necessarily just different from texture to taste)
@Kuonluw
2 жыл бұрын
@@gashferohira2635 Makes sense but I thought most chains received the same flour. I'd understand if they used local flour but I don't think chains/franchises do that.
As a fellow french living in paris im glad you’re doing this video cause im tired of eating kebabs and pastas
Great addition to the jambon beurre. I'm french and yeah i would try that any day :) Great video as always Ethan!
I just love watching the appreciation for our traditions and your nice twists on them ! Great vid as always .
One of my favorite uses for leftover baguette is pain perdu. It's bread chunks toasted in a pan with melted butter and topped with powdered sugar and a drizzle of jam. SO GOOD.

Just be careful which type of bread you use. My brother once made it with his leftover bread stash, didn't realise there was a chunk of chorizo bread in there, one of my nephews was in for an unpleasant surprise.

Baguette has to be the one thing I miss from my country since moving to Canada. Even though there are some really good boulangeries in Québec, paying 3.50CA$ (2.5x the price in France) for a baguette hurts a bit lmao
Ethan, this is absolutely fantastic. Very creative, glad to see you’re enjoying France so much
Crushing baguette pieces with a wine bottle... You're literally transforming into a frenchman! C'est fantastique!
Literally just made your baguette recipe yesterday so this is perfect timing 👍🥖
The baguette 🥖 is such a beautiful piece of bread. It is an artistic masterpiece in itself. An international treasure
Great vid as always Never tried baguettes as much but I would give those ideas a go. congrats on the 1 million btw 👏🏼
omg this is both entertaining and informing at the same time! thank you for another great video!
i love about to eat!! great to see you credit them at the start, as always thank you for the videos!! 😊😊
Wow what a brilliant tip to season the cheese so it disperses somewhat evenly as it melts. I know it wasn't necessarily the topic of the video but that kinda just blew my mind.
How dare you even lightly insinuate that "housing them by the fistful" isn't a "real meal"
Loved the video Ethan, i liked the concept and would love to see this format but with brioche or other kinds of bread
I swear that pizza baguette gave me instant hunger... while eating! I'll try that for sure. 2 more baguette street food sandwiches we have in France: - "Hot Dogs" - it's literally a Bratwurst smothered with emmental bechamel. Imagine my surprise when I first had a real hot dog in Chicago :) - "Sandwich Americain" - This is a sandwich you'll find mostly in donner/kebab places, it's a baguette filled with 2 hamburger patties, american cheese, big mac style sauce and french fries (yup stuffed right in the bun on top of everything)
I mean. Your channel is just exquisite excellence. It's a rare thing where I watch something for the first time on here, and not learn something new that adds so much more depth or variety to something I already knew. It's really hard to put into words how much your content adds to daily life. It's big tho
I've always been making "budget pizza" with baguette. It definitely tastes better than most fast food pizza restaurants
I really recommend trying to make Knödel with older stale baguette thats left. Its a breaddumpling with various versions. Sometime just a side dish, sometimes the star of the show and filled with bacon or spinache and some tasty cheese. Best way of using up old bread!
No other channel inspires me to cook as much as this one

Found this video at the perfect time, I just made 4 baguettes all for myself and didn't know what to do besides sandwiches! French dips are maybe my favorite kind to make with baguettes 😎 I'm so pumped to try some of these recipes out! Thanks Ethan!
This was really interesting to watch, I hope I can become as creative as you one day! I will try most of these (with homemade baguettes from your other video since I'm not in France), but bread pizza is something I've wanted to try for ages.
Baguettes formed one my fondest memories of Paris. I was not there for long, but the twice daily ritual of buying a fresh baguette from the local boulangerie and sampling it with only salted butter is something I'll never forget.
Some other options would be a bruschetta, bread pudding, stuffing, or french onion soup. Good showcase of variety.
I just love the bread pizza idea! So good :)
All of these recipes seem incredible
So happy you moved to Paris! Baguettes are the best! If you ever need help with the city, I'd be more than happy to help!
I made bread pudding with the Costco twin pack of baguettes. It was an experiment that actually worked. I used to pass through Liege, Belgium on business. Many times a baguette was all I ate all day, they were so good on their own.

If you like bread pudding, try making it with King Hawaiian rolls. Amazing!
Jambon buerre is my favorite, aside from just eating them with butter or cheese and some fruit. Sliced gherkin on the jambon buerre adds a very nice bright pop of flavor, and a little za'atar sprinkled on it really makes it shine!
The bread-crumb pasta dish looks like carb heaven, definitely going to try that when I don't have any cheese on hand but need a bit of crispy goodness for my pasta dish. P.s. Congrats on the Geico sponsorship! Man, you've come a long way since I first subscribed (back when you were doing your "I spent 1 month in Mexico" series). Keep at it!
Great video Ethan! I encourage you to séance for the pain perdu recipe, it’s a great way to use your leftover bread as a dessert.

Hey man, just saying as someone who subbed around 200k subs, I really like the direction of your channel. Keep it up!
I'm going to have to try that baguette pizza. It looked so good.
Love the content!
Une baguette tradition is literally the one thing I miss the most when I am not in France. I have never ever found one in the states that comes close. Another thing you can do is buy the raw tradition dough from the boulangerie and use that to make your own pizza crust. It’s awesome
Personally I think the best way to make croutons is with an air frier. You get even browning, even oil absorption and lots of crispy bits. Also torn, not sliced, that way they're even crispier.
How have I never thought of mixing herbs and spices with cheese that I'm going to melt before proceeding, it's such an obviously good idea when you think about it because their flavours are going to infuse with cheese as it melts.

And it keeps the green herbs from burning! This was a revelation to me when Ethan showed it and it seems so obvious I'm mad it didn't occur to me.
About jambon-beurre: it's quite common to put comté or emmenttal, as well as "cornichons" (gherkins, tiny pickled cucumbers).
Btw the precision in the "baguette tradition" is very much appreciated even French people don't know that the name is regulated and you can't call it a tradition unless you only use these ingredients only (with salt being optional) and being made in the bakery and never frozen It's always more expensive than a regular one but you know it's fresh and as simple as a baguette can be
hit the big 1 000 000 not too long ago! congrats Ethan!
Loved this! Definitely saved in my food folder. Now to find a prime baguette 🥖
The sound of the crispy baguette is my ASMR
This video simply captivated me
You're a beast. Appreciate the ideas!
Just a thing for you to try on your "Jambon beurre". Add a thin layer of french Dijon mustard "forte" on your butter before layering with ham. Give it a try, it's a game changer. A fancy Swedish or Danish chef whose name I can't remember did that trick after a few years in Paris. And, being french, I was struck on how good it comes out. Give it a try 😁
My favorite simple baguette sandwich is a baguette, thick slices of butter, and thick slices of either Swiss cheese, Jarlsberg, Compte or Gruyère. And wine. Great episode Ethan, you in France is fun.
Wow GEICO sponsorship, just noticed he's over 1 million subscribers already. Knew it would happen but not this fast, gratz.
Thanks Ethan. I love cherry tomatoes and that deli trick is the truth. Excellent work
Congrats on Geico sponsorship...👌
The bread crumb recipe is what I, as a Brazilian, would call "farofa de pão", it goes really nicely with poultry, beef and pork - traditionally, farofa is made out of cassava flour, it's a pretty common side in churrascarias all around Brazil. I could eat it by the spoonful myself, hehe.
Man, as a Spanish this video is useful as well. We eat a lot of bread and this give me tons of ideas for that leftover bread. I'm going to try the pasta tomorrow

"Slashed open like a dead tauntaun". Oh my sides
Heb, nice timing. I put an baguet ( which is called 'stokbrood in west Flanders) in the freezer two days ago.
Just a heads up to anyone having an issue with making a comparable vinaigrette - the tomato juice is almost *necessary* because the lycopene in it acts as a weak emulsifier for the oil and vinegar. This gives you a consistent dressing, instead of a watery mess. Of course, you'd be less-likely to notice on toasted bread than in a plain, green salad.
Literally said "oh my dieu." out loud when I saw "Jambon buerre" at 2:30. Please Ethan 😂
