What Happens When You Put A Can Of Soda In A Huge Vacuum

Ойын-сауық

In this video I put a soda can in the vacuum chamber to see if I can get it to explode. I talk a little bit about soda cans exploding and that you need to either increase the temperature of the can or reduce the pressure around the can. You can check out my science channel to see why shaking a can of soda doesn’t actually increase the pressure in an un-opened can of soda. I end up having to warm up the soda and then it finally explodes in the vacuum chamber. It leaves the soda completely flat with no carbonation left.

    Ah. The funny thing is that roaches are one of the few animals that can survive a vacuum. For that reason they can be observed with an electron micrograph without actually killing them (since in order to view something with an electron micrograph that object must first be inserted into a vacuum).

    Won't all the liquid ruin your pump?

  • @dutch_blades

    @dutch_blades

    7 жыл бұрын

    A typical vacuum chamber will have magnesium and/or calcium sulfate (sometimes with added cobalt chloride) to stop moisture in the air from destroying the rather expensive pump overtime. The soda doesn't have to physically get inside the pump in a liquid state to ruin it. Aerosoles or water vapor can do the trick as well.

    I live in America too,and I've never seen a 16-ounce can. They're only ever 12 (regular) and 7.5 (mini). 16 ounces is a typical plastic bottle size, but those are growing to 24 now.

  • @Rahsinok

    @Rahsinok

    7 жыл бұрын

    The typical bottle size, from what I've seen, is 20oz. 16oz is around but you usually only get those in 6 packs. Never seen a 24oz bottle. 16oz cans are not that common as most places don't sell them but they are becoming more frequent. 12oz cans are usually sold in the 12 or 24 packs and the smaller cans are usually sold as 6 packs. All my info is based on my own personal experiences and observations from living in multiple states.

    To explode a can, you can either heat it up, as you said, or freeze it, as the expansion of ice crystals forming will usually rupture the can as well. Decreasing the pressure outside the can is like a 3rd non-standard option. lol

    Crazy that it's less than 14.7psi from exploding while resting in a 12 pack in the back of your car on a given summer day.

    Can't believe he actually thinks (said) he pulled 14.7 psi out of his little perspex box. Didn't even show the gauge or as the can partly re-pressurised the chamber... FAIL.

    Okay I have to ask, did you use the same can both times? Aluminum used in soda cans fatigues pretty fast. Isn't it possible it could have failed without preheat just from the repeated stresses?

  • @hello201014
    @hello2010146 жыл бұрын

    Internal pressure and external pressure have widely different effects. The same amount of external pressure can have devastating effects while the same amount of internal pressure may not do anything significant to the can.

    Decreasing the pressure outside of the can caused the dissolved gasses in the soda to come out of solution which is what caused the pressure buildup inside.

  • @RogerC53

    It's possible that the increased pressure inside the can on the second attempt is not responsible for the can exploding. What about weakening of the pop top due to repeated pressure stress? Maybe if you simply ran the experiment repeatedly at the same temperature you'd get the can to pop. You need a control to make this truly scientific.

    I would like to suggest that you to place an audio recorder and something that emits noise in the chamber and record the sound as the vacuum is imposed. We all know what would happen but it could be neat to hear it. or perhaps there is another sound experiment.
