    The Tanks were not charged, and there was no valve on them. When I was in the Navy, I saw a welding oxygen tank fall, broke the valve off, and took off from the dock and flew through a destroyer leaving a very neat hole. Filled tanks of any size is no joke.

    Aug 3 I picked up the gear for my PADI Open Water Scuba Certification Class. I was sent home with 3 Full 80's. Drove to work Aug 4. Afterwards I had to drive 120 Miles to the Park. 3 clanging around in the trunk of my Kona. At one point we were going 80 mph on the highway. Afterwards it occurred to me that it was probably not a good idea. Passed the class on Aug 6. Drove the 120 Miles home. Dropped off the equipment the next morning.

    Could you go diving in Lake Simcoe or in the Georgian Bay RIGHT NOW with a wet suit, or would you need a dry suit?

  • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

    Definitely wetsuit. Drysuits are great for extended exposure in cold water (less than 45*F) but a wetsuit is fine for short periods even under the ice. I dove in Alaska. The water was 47*F and I wished that I had my wetsuit. Everyone said to bring a drysuit so I did. Realize that I made just 1 dive a day, no deeper than 80' and no more than 30 minutes long. Personally I feel too insulated in a drysuit. It doesn't feel like I'm diving. Remember Bubble Boy? Alec

    Boguslaw Maciejuk if the valve doesn’t snap off must likely about the same result as what he did in this video. If the valve snaps off the tank becomes a very dangerous uncontrolled missile, or if the valve stem breaks with out coming off completely you end up with a dangerous high speed spinning top.

  • @toriless

    @@NoGlockTrucker Yep, you may not be able to use it but the valve is the vulnerable part and dangerous not the tank. The valves also now have burst disks. Maybe Alec should talk about what they do and hydrotesting. Tipping a tank over much less of an issue then dropping it. Nor sure, what damage would cause a leak versus a failure were is takes off like a rocket.

    Gather round the fire for scary story time... I'm an HVAC tech and here i am in my third world sh1thole repairing a walk in freezer and i need to do a system purge, we do that with nitrogen, so it's friday afternoon and my portable cylinder (80cu.ft Catalina AL) runs out and there's no way i can make it through town to the gas supplier before closing in the truck so i get om my 250 cc scooter cinch down tight the cylinder in the back seat perpendicularly and off i go ( yeah i know...). Coming back from the gas supplier with the cylinder full (3000psi) i suddenly go down in a very violent fashion and when i open my eyes i see people in the street and on the curbs covering and running for their lives, it's only then that i remember about the cylinder but it was all over. Turns out a truck had spilled diesel fuel just minutes before right on the corner where i fell. The bottom of the cylinder hit the pavement full force as it was protruding from the side of the bike and i was going roughly 20-30 mph and apart from some scratch marks nothing else happened to it or else i will not be on this earth i think. So there you go, the cylinders are much more resistant than you think but still, don't be dropping them as i was only lucky to fall to the bottom side of it...

    Hi, Alec, I'm just getting into diving, but I'm a little concerned about BCDs not fitting me; I'm rather on the bigger side. I've seen some cummerbund & buckle band extenders on dive shop websites; have you (or Kevin, more likely) had any experience with using those extenders? Any other advice for us bigger divers?

  • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

    @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

    4 жыл бұрын

    I have used the extenders often for big guys. They work OK but a BCD that's too small is worse, almost dangerous, than one that's too big. Try as many different brands as you can. One company's XXL is different from another. Sherwood has good BCs and they came in XXXL. You may be a candidate for a plate and wing BCD which can easily fit big guys. They just take a bit of practice (in a pool first) to be sure they fit and that you can use them properly. Good luck. Alec

    I have read that SCUBA tanks should not be stored full, or even near full. Closest shop to me that can fill cylinders is 2 hours away, I own 6 tanks and normally store them full. Can you tell me if there is any risk with storing them full? Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on this channel, I have learned so much!

  • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

    @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

    Tanks are made to hold a full fill which can typically be for a year max when it need its annual visual inspection. The air inside will not go bad, even if enriched air, so no worries about keeping them filled. Of concern should be its storage location. Keep in a cool or constant temperature location (not the truck in the sun). Continuous heat/cold cycles should be avoided. Otherwise fill up, and get ready to dive Tim.

    @@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter, Thank you so much for the response. I was reading things that mentioned moisture will build up during FULL storage, which to me makes no sense...I would think a full cylinder would be less prone to moisture build-up, as long as it is not exposed to fast or frequent temperature swings (like in your vehicle). Also, was reading people saying storing full will decrease cylinder life and makes them prone to "sustained load cracking", even with new cylinders. I knew that could be an issue with old Al cylinders. As far as life of the tank, I would think that it is the depletion and filling of the tanks that would stress the material slightly over the years. Still, sometimes the Scubaboard folks can be pretty convincing, which had me second guessing myself. Thank you for putting my mind at ease!

    If you watch my Vintage Scuba playlist, we use tanks from the 1960's. SLC was only is certain makes and years of aluminum tanks, look for my video on used tanks. Moisture cannot enter a tank if the inside pressure is greater than outside (3,000 psi vs 15 psi) and all scuba air has the moisture removed. Annual Visual inspections will show any moisture / corrosion and a tank tumble/clean will remove it (see may video on that too). Hope this help you decide what to do Tim.

    actually Alu 80 3000psi tanks are HEAVIER than steel an 80 HP tanks if you look at the numbers (and much more buoyant as well). That's a common misconception... the walls and base are much thicker on alu tanks - about 1.5lbs, and when you add lead for bouyancy you're looking at almost 10# difference!

  • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

    Enough air for a good dive before approaching decompression limits, strong, cheap and easy to maintain are key reasons it's still used in America today. There are high pressure steel tanks rated at 3445 psi but the 80 cu/ft aluminum is well suited for recreational divers until something really good comes along, like personal submarines!

Previously I said that if they were tested properly and passed they'd be fine to use although dive centers won't fill them. That's their choice. Now I'm of the opinion that, being over 30 years old at this point, what the heck. Get a new one. It's not worth the hassle. A good LDS will offer you a Trace-In on the old ones, even if they are garbage. We used to give a $100 credit towards a new tank. Good luck. Alec

    Is an aluminum tank full of air heavier than a steel tank full of air?

  • @ScubaGirl68

    @ScubaGirl68

    4 жыл бұрын

    This is a loaded question. My answer below considers the weight on the surface, not in the water. First, you have to consider the weights of the two tanks. This is stamped on the shoulder of all tanks. I have two 15ltr steel cylinders that were made at different times by different companies. They each have a different "tare" weight. One is about 2kg (4.4lbs) heavier than the other. The next issue is the gas/air that you put inside. If your steel and aluminium tanks have the same capacity *and* the same working pressure, then the gas inside will weigh the same. However, all too often they are never the same. This is where you need to know just how much gas you actually have inside. In Europe, this is easy for us to calculate, even when capacities and pressures are different. For example, a 12ltr filled to 290BAR has exactly the same amount of gas as a 15ltr filled to 232BAR (3,480ltrs). Another example would be an 80cuft ally tank (=11.2ltr) filled to 206BAR (3,000psi) would have the about the same amount of gas as a 10ltr steel tank filled to 230BAR (ally=2,307.2ltrs vs steel=2,300ltrs).

    It's an illusion caused by the narrowness of the door and the viewing distance. That's The Kings Highway (Hwy 400) you're looking at, and the speed limit is 100 km/h (62 MPH).

    Long story. Suffice to say that I've had a very interesting, exciting life. No regrets, no bucket list, just relaxing and looking forward to whatever the the next step brings. I'm one of those guys who will come sliding into the Pearly Gates in a cloud of dust and say to Saint Peter, "That was a blast! What's next?". Alec

    Uh, only 1 second in but I would guess nothing unless it is directly on the valve at an angle and even then not much. Buy a new valve.

    I hate seeing tanks stored standing upright, more so with E size Oxygen tanks (smaller base than a scuba tank), if they fall and the valve is broken, the tank becomes a missile. Do a search for broken oxygen tank to see actual videos.

    I have seen the results of falling O2 tanks and explosions. They need to be secured upright or lying down with a boot that does not roll. Alec

    This didn't tell me anything about what happens when you drop a tank, other than it makes noise. What did it do to the condition of the tank? What would it do to the valve if it were full? Can the tank still be used, or should it be brought in for inspection immediately? This was probably the most uninformative video Alec ever did.

    I'm sure i covered your points is some respect. The key point is it did not bend in half or dent which many divers think may happen, as per the many comments. A.
