    Salt seething ("Saltsydning" in Danish) is a very old tradition in Denmark, that dates back to at least the 1100's. Some basic tips for salt seething: 1. Use a pan or a large plate, not a pot. When using a flat container for your sea water, you maximize the surface where the water can evaporate from. This will minimize the time and heating energy spent in the process. 2. Don't let your water boil, only heat it to around 83 degrees Celsius (181 degrees Fahrenheit). When heating above this temperature, certain minerals will start to crystallize. These minerals add a bitter taste to the salt, and you typically don't want that. I can't guarantee that your local sea water contains these minerals, so you might be lucky and be able to boil your sea water without making the salt bitter. But if you end up with sea salt that has a bitter taste to it, and you did boil your water, you then know why. 3. Don't boil your water dry, only boil out so much water that your saline solution is 26%. When your saline solution (sea water) reaches around 26% salt, your saline solution is saturated, and the salt crystals will start to precipitate, and can be scooped out. The wet salt can then be put into a filter of some sort, to let the remaining water drip out. This saves time and energy. 4. The magnesium salt solution that is left over from this process, is typically used in cremes for treating psoriasis and other unwanted skin conditions and diseases.

    Not only a long danish tradition but it is from the romans, the use to appreciate so much the salt that they would pay with it, where do you think that the word salary comes from? Here in Spain many people keep doing it, also because the places where they do it create perfect ecosystems for little insects to live in, and those are eaten by flamingo, that is why it is important here to keep these places

    Cats and Hats, freezing salt in no way would get you water. The reason why you can separate salt from water is by boiling it, which means the water particles evaporate into a gas, and until it cools down is very fast and most likely to collect somewhere else. Also, salt is already frozen in the first place as it is solid. If you learned this in school, then it was certainly not from a teacher.

  • @Glalie2000

    @Glalie2000

    6 жыл бұрын

    Shane Spurgeon yes you are correct but what the op is saying is he could've gotten a more accurate result by first getting the weight of the pot, then getting 3kg of water weight added onto the pot weight, and then once it's evaporated the pot with salt is weighed and the original pot weights subtracted from that to get a much more accurate result since you cannot scrape 100% of the salt off the pot.

    They use to produce salt in the Florida keys by feeding ocean water into a dammed up area and then let the water evaporate. When the water was gone, they would collect the salt for their use.

    To remove solids from water faster than settling use a cloth strip wetted in the water then run it over the edge of the original container into a container at a lower level. The water will siphon from the original container to the lower container leaving the solids behind. However this will not remove microscopic organic contamination or dissolved solids.

    Wait, potatoes are bad for you? Or is it the natural sea salt that's bad for you... I'm sorry I fail to see what point you're trying to make, considering the chips made with sea salt and potatoes also don't involve typical grease that is a byproduct of frying dried potato slices in oil, which is how Lays and Pringles and most chips are made. Healthy chips, which are certified, are baked, which means no grease, so substantially more healthy than your average potato chip. Why do I know all this? I'm a very bored person and I tend to binge watch documentaries and how-its-made videos. Why not make homemade potato chips? I have and they're actually much more delicious than anything you'd buy, just make sure you add a flavor to it, or else it'll just be salty potatoes...

    You should consider the fact that it's not just pure sea salt- There are industrial pollutants in sea water, and some of that crusty stuff I'm pretty sure is partly calcium from the shells of certain sea animals.

  • @Kari_512

    @Kari_512

    Amanda Schmidt The problem is the source of the calcium and how it's processed. That calcium would also be infused with pollutants, considering those most of those animals would have grown up in those waters. A lot of people wouldn't like the thought of eating ground up shells and calcium urate lol. I don't mind as long as it's from clean waters, but def not the city waters.

    Yes I'm sure the table salt you buy in the store goes through expensive pollutant extraction and they only add the healthiest anit-clumping agents. Look at the ingredients on your salt. Ferrocyanide. Alluminum Silicates. Don't worry they are non-toxic. What is the definition of non-toxic?
