What happens when a power plant comes under cyber attack?
On December 23rd 2015, Prykarpattyaoblenergo Power Plant in the Ukrainian town of Ivano-Frankivsk came under cyber attack that experts believe was well funded and had been planned for several weeks before.
The hackers took control of a number of regional substations and left more than 200,000 people in western Ukraine without power for several hours.
This is a reconstruction of what happened on the day.

Why do these plants need to be connected to the outside internet anyhow?

they dont. the attackers found their way in through it infrastructure and were then able to gain access to the ot stuff
Why is no one talking about this
There is a video of an attack on the training system of one of the formerly State-owned power distribution companies.
Lucky they didn't bypass breakers and surged. A lot of money could have been lost if that happened. These hackers probably just wanted to cause trouble, but not devistating damage.
Никакой атаки не было бы, если бы системы управления (разные) не имели бы внешних выходов.
