I love more than anything that Jace raw-dogging is canon. That was important to know.
At the start of the story today I was “done” with Magic story (as someone that read the books in the 90s). I was thinking simple plot armor “oil vanished - Jace and Vraska cured”. But, I actually like how old story elements helped them survive and am pleasantly surprised. I REALLY LIKE the idea of them becoming the new “villains” (depending on viewpoint). Like Ryan says: it’s compelling because of “what are they willing to do?”

I doubt that they're going to be the villains. What this SCREAMS to me is that Emrakul kinda has to be used. That was her job, as I understand it. The other Eldrazi Titans, or new ones, also need to come into existence. It also might provide a 20-year (real time) 'Told ya so' from Ugin to Jace.
This epilogue is much better than the main story of the set

I think they just really undersold them early on. Now they're leaning much more into a connected multiverse.
Oh man, we're finally here! I absolutely adored the Epilogue chapters. I think the author did a great job of walking us back through the relevant parts of Jace's history to provide context for the journey she was about to take Jace and Vraska on. I loved how the flashback scenes recontextualized prior scenes from across the past year of Magic's story, and I thought the answers that she provided for most of the big remaining questions, like how Jace and Vraska survived, were interesting and satisfying. But what I loved most about these chapters were how they set up Jace, Vraska, and Loot to be our new Anti-Hero Antagonists. My favorite type of antagonist is "the person who has steadfast, unwavering convictions but who is horribly misguided". The kind of antagonist will genuinely reach out to the heroes with a welcoming hand and an invitation to join them, and who cannot understand when that invitation is rejected. Watching the trio walk off into the sunset with their hearts set on burning everything down to rebuild it to their own standards was such a great ending. I'm genuinely excited to see what happens next!

It's fun when a protagonist gets to play antagonist for a while, especially when you (the audience) are so familiar with how powerful the character is.
@charcharmunr

@@SquidWithABigIdea Most likely the end thing will be something like "they stop before the commit some truly bad atrocity but then somebody, say, Tezzeret, hijacks the MacGuffin and makes themself the final boss" because at the end of the day Magic IS about conflict, so the story just resolving peacefully isn't likely to happen.
Jace and Vraska being the new villains is cool! I'm just hoping the end of the 'omenpath arc' doesn't actually end with the only people able to traverse the planes being planeswalkers again. Like, Wizards could probably cut down on Thunder Junction-esque "EVERYONE IS HERE!!" sets, but a multiverse where everybody has the possibility to go anywhere is really interesting to me. And also it lets us get Fblthp cameos in non-Ravnica sets.

I really don't like the everyone can go everywhere time period. It takes away the rarity of Planeswalkers and how each one of them were unique and had a power to traverse something that kept them from being the same as ordinary people. I hope they somehow fix the planes & sparks to remove Omen Paths. Then we could see the fallout of how people given a god-like ability would act, if it suddenly was taken away. Who would rise up to try and create/steal a planeswalker's spark. It could usher in a whole host of villians, hellbent on getting the powers they once had.
@MissingNovice

@@andrewfornes5320 being a Planeswalker is still special. The fact that you can do it at will is a pretty big deal. Plus the walkers of today are t gods. They're just wizards who happen to know how to cast planeshift. The god thing was fixed with the first mending and if you want to have an arc like what you're describing... Read the War of the Spark arc. Unfortunately they didn't end it well.
The main story already gave me a "Borderlands" vibe, with the western theme, the vault and it having a powerful creature inside. Now with Tamiyo mentioning that there are several of these vaults, I'm quite sure where the writers got their inspiration from.

When Norn died the signal died with her and it all stopped functioning. Remember that New Phyrexia isn't the same as old Phyrexia. I’ve honestly loved jace’s growth since gatewatch. Having him and vraska survive was one of the best things from thunder junction.
My theory is that they arent actually cured of their oil, jace is both cocky and often not as good as he thinks he is, so i could see the oil using him to basically go dormant. With wizards playing the long game and all the plot holes from march being actually relevant for a later storyline. His and vraskas plan seems too phyrexian to me to be their own thoughts and it comes about in an almost body snatcher trance in front of an omenpath.

Interesting theory. We thought Phyrexia dead when Yawgmoth was destroyed yet it lived on in the oil. Maybe with the end of New Phyrexia the inheritors of the legacy are in the "uncompleated" planeswalkers. One theory could be that Ajani and Nissa were the only planeswalkers actually cured of compleation, if even then, with some core aspect living in Jace and Vraska (and, by extension of this reasoning, Nahiri). If this is true, then Phyrexia will somehow return through them, though by what means and how is too speculative to consider.

Jace is still super messed up, he just uses illusion magic to cover it up. Annie Flash's angel eye saw through it when he was in the vault with loot and mentioned he had a lot of scars. Both of them were healed using a phoenix feather, which combo'd with Jace's Mother's spell, would necrotize and burn away bad flesh and then replace it with new flesh. Vraska was extremely messed up from a lightning bolt from Ral so she had a lot replaced, that is why she looks normal.
I had already read and cried about this epilogue and i still wasn't ready to hear it again 😭
Gotta be honest. I almost cried when I was listening to the epilogue chapters on YT with the whole jace's mom part.

The epilogue is well worth reading more than once -- been a long long time since any magic lore did that.

Hope jace and vraska can remake the multiverse, a soft reboot could be interesting
Good summary
1) Final Fantasy Phoenix Downs are now canon in MtG 2) I adore that you skirted the detail that Jace & Vraska have been trying to conceive to
Could you imagine if you could just cure all phyrexian damage with ONE phoenix feather? We get one of those chickens in every single plane why are the phyrexians even a threat at all
@MagicArcanum
Ай бұрын
Because it's not just having the feather - it's also knowing how to use it, and Jace's mom is a skilled medic who was in the army on Vryn during their battle against the invading Phyrexians. She came up with this treatment herself and it only works with her knowledge and magic behind it. It's possible that now with the omenpaths, her technique will spread, but it's probably too late to be used to save anyone else, since the oil is now rendered inert and anyone with it still inside of them is dead.
@charcharmunr

@@MagicArcanum Yeah, it really only works for compleated planeswalkers and those who weren't fully compleated. Compleation destroys the soul for non-walkers, so there's nothing TO save.

Vryn has been at war with itself for as long as we've known about it, and Ranna is no simple medic. Her house is full of medical textbooks and she has a lifetime of field experience so she's probably worth ten doctors on another plane. Plus, we've seen the parents of planeswalkers be special in their own right - Chandra's mom, for example. So it's not unreasonable to think someone part of a magical bloodline with decades of hands-on practice in a war-torn setting would wind up being one of the best.
Well, I’m glad we got to know what happened to Jace and Vraska. Finally. And the story with his mother was a nice touch. And though I don’t like Loots design, it does explain his presence there. Somewhat. It looks like it might be to start of an overarching story. We probably haven’t seen the last of Loot.
This story was fantastic. I do however want more information on Kaito and the Wanderer post-rupture. I wish we could swap out furry plane for more Kamigawa.
I’m going to say my prediction and leave it at that. Gatewatch Civil War
Somehow this sounds a bit like the beginning of Jaces Villain arc. Since he sees himself as the one who knows what planes are worth existing.

Ryan no! The cookie you gave Garruk has first strike!
Great telling Ryan. So Vraska and Jace now wants to become Thanos.
Okay, first I’ll say that I didn’t mind the epilogue-I thought it was actually decent…also fantastic video as always…now, I’m not even sure if this is place to make this comment, but I want to say that I personally want to see a storyline that features a regular non-planeswalker (sparked/desparked) non super iconic magical being (Kellen/rakdos/amalia) as a new original baron zemo esq villain who is determined to finish what the multiverse started and end all planeswalkers. I even think it would be the coolest thing ever to have the artists slowly tease the figure in the background of common cards (which can be more easily overlooked) to highlight just how often the little people on the planes of this grand universe are ignored. I just want more grounded villains who are willing to methodically plot to outwit other characters who are most likely way more powerful and threatening…additionally this would prove that not every evil character needs to be a Nicol Bolas, a phyrexian praetor, or a planeswalker duo across sets (because when we often get a villain who doesn’t fit that description they die or are defeated in one set-most recently Akul, who I would argue couldn’t fit my hypothetical villain role anyways but still he was cool and now he’s gone). I don’t know if anyone will read this book of a comment but let me know what y’all think because I’m curious to see what this community wants and feels about the current story’s roots and the direction they seem to be growing towards.
@bru4773

The problem is that we've already seen someone with that goal teased in the story, so we're probably not going to have anyone else take up that role at this point. We saw a desparked Nahiri decide that planeswalkers were a blight on the multiverse and vow to end them, with a disapproving Ajani standing nearby. So if theyre going to go with someone trying to kill off the planeswalkers, I doubt it would be anyone but her at this point.

Getting phyrexianised? Just say no. You can't be turned into a phyrexian without your consent.
If they use Phoenix feathers to remake the multiverse...Bolas could be hiding the elements of his being in the sparks that he took while on Ravnica. I'm not going to lie, Jace making a mental bubble to fight of the the virus is the exact defences I imagined for him when he got infected. Him being this super mental mage, to me it might make sence that he would be able to do it. Like if hes able to use his mental prowess to take Controle of someone else's body why couldn't he use his mind magic to take control of his own body.

It wasn't random. She waited until there was a mapped path from Vryn to Ixalan (and then to Thunder Junction). The whole point of the epilogue chapters was to show us how patient and methodical Jace and Vraska had become after their time as Phyrexians. It's a big change for them because as planeswalkers they could be much more spontaneous - if something goes wrong, they could just planeswalk away from trouble. But now, they can't, and so they spent months planning how to get into the vault and figuring out exactly who they would need to get help from.

I think the difference there was that while a single planeswalker may be evil, it is hard for them to bring an entire army with them from plane to plane. Nicol Bolas needed a really convoluted plan to get Eternals to Ravnica and then a supremely powerful magical artifact to trap other planeswalkers there. I think Jace and Vraska are worried future events will be on a similar scale - someone like Kaervek could search the multiverse for allies and bring a huge force back to Dominaria to conquer Zhalfir again, for example, which would have been previously impossible.

There's a link in the description of this video that should take you to the official story page, and I've got a video on this channel called "Where Does Magic's Story Come From?" which will provide you with additional resources.

@@MagicArcanum You’re the best! Thank you 🥹
Other than the creation of the Javamancers from Tarkbucks, I think these chapters were the best stories we've gotten in years

@@joto5459 first mention of tarkir we got in a long time was about how they make cold brew using ice magic. If they aren’t called Javamancers it’s honestly a crime
So is Jace ashiok the entire wilds of eldraine story or just that one prison part and this set?

Just to free Eriette on Eldraine, and then all of Thunder Junction.
These 2 epilogue has far better written than all set after ONE. The writing is pretty good (judging from the mess element and plot that they got in hand) prolly except that coffee party tho , that one just...wait they have coffee??! Loool
So was Jayce Ashiok for the whole eldraine story? Or only at the end during the jail cell? Does this mean we haven’t actually seen Ashiok since phyrexia?

Did you watch the whole video? I explain this at 13:40
Planeswalkers are jerks! They have their sparks ignite, they disappear from home, and their families and friends think they are dead. Then years later, they finally decide to return home and tell their families and friends they are still alive.
Prediction: Jace and Vraska will do the thing with the thing to "fix" the multiverse. And, in so doing will also release Nicol Bolas from his prison and he will of course inevitably regain his spark and his former power because he's super smart and crafty. This will also something something the leylines and mana in the multiverse and Emrakul will realize that now it's time to leave her slumber in the moon over Inistrad. And bing bang boom we've got not one but two big bads lined up for the next couple years.
The story certainly didn't deliver on any kind of "redemption arc" for Oko. Maybe it's not done yet, but they set things up in WOE to make him a more complicated character with nuanced motivations... We followed Kellen's adventures over 4 sets to find Oko, and he wound up just being a bad dad on top of being a jerk who turns kings into elks for LOLs.

I mean, he has a BIT of regret near the end, but the point of Oko is he's a once-good man gone too far in a cause that no longer has any foundation in morality, he's just embraced being a shithead.
The Mending 2: Electric Boogaloo.
So, how did Jace take Vraska to Vrynn? Since when can you plansewalk with someone else who isn't a planeswalker?

She was still a planeswalker when she left Ravnica. The war against the Phyrexians was ongoing, and it wasn't until later when they were defeated that the spark rupture happened. By then she was on Vryn and would have been trapped there, were it not for the omenpaths.
Given WotC's history, we're going into the story about the MegaMending right?
It might be stupid, but only Jace except Ugin knows that Bolas is inprisoned on Meditation Realm, and Loot is Key to Everything, so….. maybe they will finally show still kicking Bolas some spotlight? Like, what is more destructive force to destroy the Multiverse (in order to allow it’s rebirth) than one of the Elder Dragons, and probably the most powerfull one alive? I would love if they unleashed him, or at least stop pretending „well, he’s nowhere to be seen, so he must be dead”.
