He helped me help kill Nicol Bolas a couple years back" Kaervek: "THEY'VE BOTH BEEN DEAD FOR OVER A THOUSAND YEARS WHAT ARE YOU ALL TALKING ABOUT" Satoru: "Hey tell me more about my famous cousin" Oko: "Right then, good start everyone, how about we take five and come back with some *constructive ideas*" Eriette: "Who the hell is Teferi"

    Annie has to actually focus and activate her power; it's not running all the time. She had no reason to suspect Ashiok was anyone else. @@MagicArcanum c’mon. It’s a crew full of outlaws. She uses her powers the moment she meets Oko. And then innately trusts everybody to never use it again? Supremely convenient to the story like I said. There is a scene where she is introduced to the entire crew including Ashiok.

  • @MagicArcanum

    @MagicArcanum

    She uses them on Oko because he shows up and says he just walked across the whole desert to reach her, and she realizes he doesn't have a speck of dust on him. So, she was suspicious. When Ashiok appears and explains their motives for hiring a team to crack the vault, she has nothing to be suspicious of. Especially because Eriette is there and pretty much vouches for Ashiok, as they have a history. I know it's a gang of outlaws but "honor among thieves" is still a thing and until Annie had an explicit reason to take a closer look at someone, she just wasn't going to. I'm not even sure it would have mattered - if she did use her eye on Ashiok right at the start, she'd know it was somebody in a disguise, but wouldn't have necessarily known Jace. So what would she do? Tell everyone else "this mysterious faceless person who hired us is actually somebody else behind all the smoke?" So long as the money is good, the gang probably still wouldn't care, right?

Well the prison is mentioned being at the bottom of a quarry, and if you look at the art the vault does seem to be free standing over a huge pit except for a single bridge. Oko took his employment very seriously; he felt any personal issues to be resolved would have to wait til he was off the clock. When he says he will come back for Kellan, while he clearly doesn't want to, I don't think he was lying about it. On some level he did want to connect with the boy, but also had no intention of ever helping him or bailing him out, and absolutely not at the cost of mission success. Kellan to Oko was a stranger with a connection that made him curious, and the potentiality to prove his usefulness. He expected Kellan to be useful and self sufficient, and then would consider opening up to him. Kellan wanted the kind of unconditional devotion that comes naturally to him from his father, something Oko is probably not even capable of. That mismatch, compounded with the opposition of their moral alignments was a recipe for interpersonal disaster between them. Oko lied to, used, and manipulated Kellan just the same as he would anyone else, but didn't denounce him until Kellan directly attacked him. Had Kellan just waited to be rescued, I think Oko would have returned to free him eventually and although he absolutely would have continued to use, deceive, and manipulate him, over time maybe Kellan could have reawakened some shred of empathy in Oko. We'll never know now though.

    I had a question while reading the story. What happened to Kellan's Wicker Hilts that he used to use as his weapons? In the story they say he can just conjure weapons and vines of magic, so clearly he doesn't use them anymore, but that growth is never actually referenced in story. On his card art and promotional images he uses very similar weapons that seem to be made of the same material as the Thunder Rifles across the plane, but he also never picks those up either. It just seems strange to me that the items so synonymous with his character design that were a gift from a fae lord on his home plane were something he'd just... toss aside with no explanation. If they're trying to go for a whole "he's strong enough now that he doesn't need them" then there are two instances in the story where we see Kellan's abilities develop, the duel with Akul and the escape from the vault. In both of these places he could have lost his weapons then developed the ability to fight without them at the same time he began cultivating his hypnosis.

    I know a lot of fans of magic aren't very happy with the theme of this set and plane, but I love it more than any other I've experienced. I'm from Arizona and hearing some other creators refer to the plane as a joke or a meme really bothers me. Magic's planes are almost always based in a real culture. Khalidesh is like India, Amonkhet is basically Egypt, etc. But for the first time, now an environment and culture unique to my home is in magic, and it feels like having this culture and heritage be recognized and legitimized in a way. It is a unique and specific culture and setting, just as much as British Isles inspired Eldraine or Norse inspired Kaldheim, but many people treat it like it's just a cosplay or a meme. This set meant a lot to me, and really made me feel at home. In a game that seems to ever increasingly cater to people other than me, that was really refreshing. I also really loved this story, and it got me back into mtg lore, which was what led me here. It was a highly enjoyable adventure, without agendas or some social message, and it turned out to be centered indirectly around the character I most enjoy and idenitfy with. One thing I don't get - why the double cross at the end? Vraska is both a successful pirate captain and a former queen. _She can afford to pay people for a job._ In fact, Ixalan makes a big deal about how well she treats her people. Also lost locations are bizarre to me, since this place apparently had no civilization before the Omenpaths (given that the vault is the ONLY structure from before then). How is there a town people have forgotten the location of with an old abandoned quarry? I know they're was a time skip, but it wasn't 10+ years.

    Vraska knew it was Jace the whole time and they were working together to get what was in the vault. The "betrayal" part of the story spotlight was that she wasn't loyal to Oko, who thought he was calling the shots but was in fact being manipulated by Jace and Vraska the whole time.

It was a fast track to burn-out, so now I focus on the big story recaps for each main set, and fill the other weeks with other content that is still story-driven (like my new series The Question, where I usually share a fun and thematic deck idea based on some element of the story or events happening in my own life)

    One of my big concerns about Magic storytelling going forward is fueled by the Omen Paths and exemplified with Thunder Junction. What Characters and plots contained within Thunder Junction itself are we interested in coming back to? Most of the cast of characters are from elsewhere in the multiverse and not contained in this world. Their grudges or motivations are led elsewhere which means if we come back to this plane its like starting from square one. I compare this to a plane like Zendikar. First time we were there we saw the devastating impact of the release of the Eldrazi. We came back and saw what had happened as a result of their release and what happened to the characters we were first introduced to amongst the chaos. Then on a third visit we see the world healing and how those characters have moved past the events. Thunder Junction just feels like a pitstop for characters and stories. Perhaps I am being short sighted but I dont see the potential excitement for a story on Thunder Junction again. :(

    The plothole that bothes me the most is what's Oko paying his team with to convince them to work for him. Most of the crew doesn't come off as "working for someone" type and even then it's not like there is some universal multiverse currency they would be in need of.

    We know he promises Satoru technology unlike anything found on Kamigawa, and he hyped up how much of an adventure it would be for Rakdos (who was mostly bored with life on Ravnica anyway and wanted something new to do). For the others it is less clear. Presumably Geralf is there to study bodies and get new ideas for his own stitching, and Gisa came to make sure he doesn't die where she can't play with his corpse. Malcolm and Breeches are "in" because they genuinely like working with Vraska. Eriette owed Ashiok for getting her out of prison. Kaervek might have been hired for actual money since he's low on resources but high on ambition.

    Thunder Junction is a plane based on the Old American West. When a character goes to Kaldheim, does anyone complain about them wearing thick furs or a helmet the way a Viking would? Dressing in the style of the plane is a totally normal thing in mtg. If your plane is the wild west, why would your characters choose to wear their normal clothes and look like an obvious interplanar visitor? This is just an example of people not recognizing the American West as a legitimate and respectable culture. It's not a meme. It was once a way of life, and still lives in the culture of the region.

    In the middle of this insanity, there are a few lines from Gisa (can't remember if such was from the main story or Team Innistrad's side story) indicating that there are a "surprising amount of bodies." Whatever was on Thunder Junction prior to the Omenpaths (very likely the Fomori), they were prob so terrifying that the plane ultimately became uninhabitable. Jace and Vraska are playing with some serious power rn.

    I quite enjoyed the story - it was nothing exceptional but I found it pretty fun to read and compact, although I share the problem with the size of Oko's gang. I especially liked Kellan's interactions with his dad, I'm almost wandering if he couldn't have gone from Eldraine right to Thunder Junction (with the two other sets still in between, they would just focus on the actual planes and not Kellan, who from what I've heard didn't do anything significant there) and it would have felt more coherent. The epilogues though... Oh my, those were beautiful.
