    Man when KZread notified me I rushed here hoping it was finally the video with manual transmission being put in reverse. Please do this one whenever possible.

  • @ormanmarvin

    @ormanmarvin

    7 жыл бұрын

    On 99% of manual transmissions, you can't physically put it in reverse when driving. It just wont engage. You will only hear a very nasty grinding noise. And unless you don't immediately abort, you will cause wear, or worst case, permanent damage. But most manual transmission cars has safety lockouts for this, where you have to either pull up a spring on the shifter, or press down on the shifter to engage reverse. If that's the case, you'd have to be an idiot to make this mistake.

  • @barzinimongo

    @barzinimongo

    7 жыл бұрын

    Me and my father tried that in a uhm 97 chrysler stratus, as its called here, we didnt drive fast, but it wouldnt go into reverse but it didnt make any sound either and that one didnt have this modern safty stuff like pulling or pushing down the gear stick.

  • @shepd3

    @shepd3

    7 жыл бұрын

    I'm one of those idiots. Was driving an old VW Jetta (1996?) and was trying for first gear. Reverse is just left of first on those, so doing it by feel is a bad idea. Even worse, you just push down ever so slightly on the shifter knob to unlock reverse. Just a grinding noise, that's all. Not a fan of that type of lockout or position for reverse.

  • @ormanmarvin

    @ormanmarvin

    7 жыл бұрын

    eLoeL If you didn't hear any grinding noise, then you didn't push the shifter enough to engage reverse. The shifting part is done mechanically, so all manual transmissions will grind when accidently trying to select reverse, doesn't matter what car.

    I work part time at a car terminal where Ford stores and ships factory cars from mainland Europe to the U.K. During a shift I move/drive anywhere from 50 to 100+ cars. It being Europe most cars are manual shift and only a few are automatics. One night during a night shift I was driving a Ford B-Max automatic. I was doing about 30 mph when I forgot I was in an automatic and pushed it into park intending to shift into 3rd gear. Park actually engaged, I heard the gears whine and it was like I had slammed on the breaks. The guy driving behind me almost slammed into me. Noticing my mistake I pulled it out of park back into drive within 2 seconds and kept driving like nothing happened. It's definitely not something I would consider doing again. I'm glad this didn't happen to you at highway speeds.

    As far as I know, when you put the parking gear, theres a latch which will latch on the gear in order for the car to stop moving. When you drive fast the latch miss stopping the gear everytime. Hence, the sound

  • @TimLucasdesign
    @TimLucasdesign2 жыл бұрын

    When you put a transmission in Park, it puts a pin through the gearing system preventing the car from rolling away. That grinding sound was the pin rubbing against the mechanism trying to engage, but since it was turning fast, it obviously wasn't able to. The transmission has to be turning slowly (ideally not at all) for that pin to drop in to place.

  • @theCodyReeder
    @theCodyReeder7 жыл бұрын

    There is a little metal tab that locks the transmission when it is put into park. I've seen it sheered off due to someone trying to push the car with a forklift while it was in park but it is very difficult to put the tab into place while the transmission is spinning (as it should be) if you did manage to bypass the safeties and get it to go in it would probably just sheer off, cease to function properly, and make noise until you have a mechanic (like me or my dad) do some major repairs.

  • @MidnightMechanic

    @MidnightMechanic

    Yep, earlier transmissions used parking pawls to lock the transmission in place, keeping it from rolling back far. That's why the older cars will roll back a little into the pawl when on a slight grade. Newer transmissions must've employed the use of a disc brake inside, and that's the slight noise he's hearing. Some lawnmower transaxles employ a parking disc as well, so in theory throwing it in park keeps it from shearing off a parking pawl. Also considering that newer transmissions are in direct communication with the car's ECM, the car will only engage the reverse band when speeds are below a certain limit, to keep from destroying gears.

    Years ago I toured a Buick plant in Michigan. At the end of the production line. They put a gallon of gas in the new cars took them up to about 60 miles an hour and then put it in park and I asked the man why did you do that. And they said to check the park pin. It acted like a break and slowed the car down. Looks like you got no reaction on your car but I imagine every transmission is different. And manufacture. Look for General Motors back when I went to that plant tour. That was pretty cool to see they actually tested it on every vehicle.

    Yes hand break will works, because it independent mechanism But nowadays even parking break become electrical (which i hate indeed it use to be behind transmission knob) But electric parking brake wont lock your tire while driving (prevent locking tire) instead it brake a while, thus press the button continuously until car stop will work (in Pajero Sport)

    I actually did this about a decade ago when I was first learning to drive and my car lost power on a highway. I was a dumb teenager and didn't remember where the emergency brake was and my regular brake was not responding at all, so I did the next best thing I could think of while barreling uncontrolled down a hill: shift into park. There was quite a loud grinding and almost wooden-creaking noise while it happened but it DEFINITELY helped slow it down enough for me to turn and roll up another small hill to slow down and land it in the grass safely.

However like many comment's suggest older vehicle's didn't have this technology so once you shifted gears while drive, your vehicle would take a long vacation with the mechanic!

In older cars it will blow out the spider gears.

  • @DvdXploitr

    Just so you know, this applies to NEWER cars only! When I was 16 and I had an older car, it died while I was driving...I lost power to the steering and the brakes were hard to apply. I was speeding at the time (like a typical 16 year old driver) and almost rammed into a car in front of me due to loss of power steering and the brakes being hard to apply. I put the transmission in Park and it acted as if I put the brakes on, (didn't lock the wheels, just started slowing down). There was a very loud crunching noise and even though it didn't DESTROY the transmission, it did damage it. It didn't act right at all after that. However, with it being a used car when I got it, there may have already been problems with the transmission when I got it.

  • @bobbrown681

    The noise was most likely the PARK mechanism trying to engage. However the speed at which you were traveling prevented the transmission from locking. I think there would be some damage to the mechanism but maybe not enough to warrant repair to the park lock system.

That scratching sound was probably that latch just about to engage your diff gear to stop it but there's probably a release mechanism that prevented it from going all the way in while driving.

    One thing I've always wondered is what happens when you press the trunk release button while driving? I used to have a 2007 Fusion and the trunk release was very close to the headlight and dash brightness control. I did notice in the current gen Fusions the trunk release button is now recessed and further away from the other controls.

    Try putting it in into low gear at high speed. This could potentially be useful if you ever suddenly and completely lost brakes. You could use this to try to slow down enough to try an emergency brake and other measures to stop completely. Some cars might allow actually engaging park while moving but I wouldn't try to use this at high speed to slow down as you might just break it and keep moving with no way to slow down.

    Supposedly the new push button transmissions (Honda/Hyundai/etc) will just go into neutral if you hit Park button while in motion

    AutoVlog Hey there sir, you're a brave man to try all these various experiments with a car you love. Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing this, and the other videos demonstrating the 'dummy proof' abilities of modern day cars. To be honest though, I feel sorry for your Ford Fusion. I hope it keeps running great, thanks for the videos!

    You should try with older cars, this one look pretty new so I️t probably has some type of preventative measures for it like you said. Also for all the people making fun of him, there’s multiple reasons this could happen, a kid could be curious and shift I️t, a purse or something sitting on the center console could slide and hit I️t, some have the locking feature so you have to squeeze the release trigger to move I️t but some don’t, and at least someone is willing to feed our thought. Respect man
