What happens if you break a promise to God? Can a broken promise to God separate you from Him forever? Big questions like these have been popping up in the comment boxes of our Aquinas 101 videos since the start of our very first season. In this video series with Fr. Ambrose Little, O.P., we will attempt to provide some answers.

I don’t make promises to God except for marriage vows, I’m human and I will inevitably fail. God is not human, He’s God, that’s why His promises are never broken.

I made a promise to God that I would stop certain sinful practices. I did very well for a few years, then fell. After that I repented and asked God to please never listen to any promises I ever would make. But I will not make another promise, because I am human, and I will fail. I still do my best to keep the promise however, but I will not make a promise again. I will just repent.

I don't understand the promise: "If I turned an atheist, I would be removed from the book of life forever." What kind of sense does such a promise make?

I agree it is A bit srange to call a conditional like that a promise. I guess it just means, "I promise to never be an atheist." But, that's also a bit odd since believing in God is already a Commandment (no need to promise something already commanded).

I made something like that; May God curse me if I ever turn away from Him (because He has given me great grace, and consolation, such that I thought it impossible). And then I learned otherwise when I did forsake Him. Though I may not have seen it at the time as such, perhaps overconfidence in self rather than God had to do with it. Either way it was imprudent. But thanks be to God, He has called me back yet again.

@@blessedvirginmaryisqueen8448 Being humble is also a command, but in my experience, christians are extremely arrogant. They only say "you must be humble" to those around them, like they're God. Like the bible didn't apply to them.

I will just never forget what happened.. he actually heard me AND Sent me help directly. amazing thank you Jesus!

For people that are too old (over 35) for religious life, but never married as they never had an interest in marriage, is there such thing as a vocation to the single life? What place do they have in the Church? #askafriar

Hi, I know you want the answer from the friar but rest assured there is absolutely a place in the single life, you can either be part of ministry or you can just be called to a vocation of singleness and chastity which is very holy as well, there are many saints who were not part of ministry nor were married who became great saintly people.

1864 "Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven." There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss. - Catechism of the Catholic Church
