I get the feeling I'm gonna be 90 before they figure this stuff out. And they're gonna tell me "sorry man! You're too old for treatment, all of your cells have already shut off"

Since your body's cells all have the genes (you can just take a patch of skin for example), you can save a couple cells by freezing/preserving them in whatever manner. This should in theory, allow them to replace the old cells with... old cells that arent so old and you'll live longer.

My Grandfather died on June 10 this year 2019 at the age of 113yrs. On Christmas day 2018, he told me that he was tired of living and doing nothing but sitting and sleeping, he then told me that he could hear voices asking him to go. Then, in the month of June, he refused to eat so that he could die, my dad begged him to but he questioned about the work he would do if he continued living. So we all let go and allowed him to die. Before he died, he mentioned the amount of money he had kept for his funeral and burial services. He was such a great man and full of wisdom. I will always miss him but I'm sure his spirit is watching over me.

@@chrisnapoli8386, I did write most of them and also took several video clips. I remember a few years ago he advised me to eat healthily, live peacefully with everyone, steal from no one and avoid illegal deals if I wanna live up to 100. Another time during Christmas 2017, he questioned why I was still single and with no children. I told him that I was never lucky to meet a husband of my choice. He then said ''you have a middle-class life, those living under the poverty line are married and with children, please get married and stop being picky''! A very wise man....

My daughter , who is five years old , introduced me to genetics and chromosomes. Lily has Mosaic Down Syndrome and ever since she came into our lives I have become submerged in cellular makeup and the production of genomes..fun fun stuff. It is very interesting and goes on and on like you all can imagine. Lily does age faster than say her two older sisters and that terrifies me. Science on down syndrome has made leaps and bounds from just 30 years ago which has kept the child with Ds in their home instead of in a hospital their entire lives , that research has led to other discoveries in how these individuals age faster than their counter parts of the same age range. I could go on and on..but I'll stop now. Thanks for this episode :)

Do you really want to see the universe die? To see all of the cosmological beauty slowly ripped away from you until there's nothing but you in your entire universe? Eventually, the universe will become cold and dead. Nothing will be able to happen. You'd likely get over it, or even forget them, by the first thousand years. Honestly, I don't think the human mind would be able to withstand all of it, but, imagining it could, you'd almost definitely get over it. Painful experiences aren't impassable. Moving on is natural.

My biologics-teacher explained it like this: If you copy a white sheet of paper over and over again it will slowly turn black, because everytime you copy it a small error occurs, there is a little stain on it for example. This adds up, same goes for our DNA. Everytime our DNA replicates it has about 1000 errors per chromosome, most of them get corrected until as many as 5 errors on average are still in the sequence of the nucleotides. Most of them don't do much but after a certain time the code get's so full of faults that the cells can't reproduce anymore and they slowly die. This also explains why living healthy is imporant and expands your life span, because if you eat the right food and stay fit your body will have a much easier time sorting the huge mess cell division creates. :)

Cancer is a mutation in a cell that makes it rapidly grow and split into other cells without end If you can tell cells to stop splitting, you can tell them to split, and how much, when The cure to cancer would probably be manmade DNA, considering thats the cause of it (Damaged DNA)

+Paul Deddens I think the cure to cancer will come about when they figure out advanced miniaturization. They can simply administer an injection of nano-machines that are programmed to hunt for any malicious cells and destroy them. Essentially an artificial immune system.

surg23 The most promising area of research is actually immunotherapy, stimulating the immune system to recognize cancerous cells and destroy them. Unlike nanobots, it is already being used in the treatment of a number of cancers and vast sums of money are being poured into it. People working in nanotechnology and cancer generally concede that other lines of research are going to beat them to the punch when it comes to eradicating cancer.

As science progresses, we will find that no obstacle is insurmountable (except maybe the speed of light and other laws of nature). Overpopulation, dictatorship, aging... That is only one specific kind of jellyfish that lives in a very isolated area that does that, and we are studying it, but it's tricky as it only lives in one lake in the entire world. Also, they do not become "babies" by any means, also it would be basically physically impossible for ANY species to do that. It reverts to a "young adult" stage, basically the moment it reached maturity. So No, you would not loss your memories if you could do this, you would NOT become a baby, this is totally illogical and impossible, you would however become a young adult of about 18~20, whenever your body stopped physically growing in height. Which would be incredibly awesome. EDIT; also, no, those jellyfish can not be eaten. Well, they CAN, but there are zero natural predators in the lake they live in, which is part of how they have adapted this ability, what would be the point in evolving a strategy to live forever if there were critters threatening to eat you every day of your life?

Frikiman BUT if you prolong it by making it more healthy then that simultaneously makes it _better._ E.g. exercize might take me between 30 minutes to an hour a day, but it makes my whole day better afterwards. And that time is _super_ easily "lost" on the internet. I do enjoy the internet a lot and it has been extremely benefitial to me, but I could easily give up that chunk of time of enjoying myself on here and spend it on exercise that makes me live longer. And makes my days right here and right now somehow better. (My mood and motivation are somehow better.) I do agree with you though, I just thought I'd add this. :)

Reviewing some of the comments left from when this episode first aired actually surprised me at the level of vitriol people have over this subject, along with a nearly ironic level of shortsightedness on the topic as well. Concerns of immortality and overpopulation clashing against societal and ethic changes or technological advances, yet all of them seem to forget the big picture: we will still die via accidents, diseases, wars, famine, natural disasters and pure stupidity. Reducing or even removing the effects of aging will no more make you immortal than a kale diet would, you'd simply feel better just before you died, which may make the experience leading up to death due to illness or disease that much worse, as you won't have as many daily maladies to make death seem a relief. Besides, looking at the world knowing you're mortal actually helps you to appreciate it more. As difficult as the abstract concept is to truly wrap your mind around, simple things such as a beautiful sunset, the light on your loved one as the earth fades to grey and night settles in, the transitional silence as diurnal and nocturnal creatures trade shifts. None of that would matter because you'd have the chance at recapturing it forever if you were immortal. It would lose it's value, as would any relationship really. Society would matter less and we'd focus more on finding ways to occupy ourselves for eternity, which means either exploration, war or pure entertainment.
