Well, I'm someone who only knows of Vox Machina due to the 'anime', so this was kind of Spoilery to me. I still don't know how/why he 'died' (as its obvious he comes back in a more powerful form), but I'm sure the animation will make his story a part of the show eventually. On Critical Role: I'm just one of those people who could never get into watching someone else play, no matter how entertaining they are (I'm an O.G. player from the late 80s when I first learned of the game, but haven't been playing much in my 'old age' now ^_^)

I have a character kind of inspired by Vax's turn to The Raven Queen. This sum up though would have made me play her better. The DM for the game kind of sucked, but with this new spin I want to play her again. Tess Cooper was a unusually calm calculated child. Her father, a cooper, worked for the local winery and her mother was the quintessential homemaker and pillar of the community. Tess herself didn't stand out. Not an orphan, not impolite, or prodigy, or anything more than surprisingly mature and well behaved. What made her different is the interest the Raven Mother took in her. Death never surprised or frightened her, the elderly seemed more comfortable around the child and never spoke of the exact reason she was such. The turn to remarkable happenen when she was ten. She knew Sarah was abused by her parents. They didn't care to pay attention enough or care. The Raven Mother knew what kind of person her brother was, and would become. The simple ask to push the haybale, at the right moment, to hit the right spot, that impaled the teen and saved her friend from the latest and would worst attack was so easy to hear and comply to. The Matron of Ravens taught her more from then on. Bad luck falling to those that would hinder her communities prosperity seem to land just where it needed to, death usually being the form of that bad luck. All the while Tess herself was never questioned, even seen as whatever the little hamlet could claim as an unofficial cleric. The same folk never actually grasping she actually was the sort, just to a Goddess that wasn't so readily welcome. She needed more though. Such a gifted and loyal acolyte could work much greater things. The kind girl was never lost in her adventures. The pure soul, the care and community, and charity, was always there. What else was there was the personal assassin and wet work mechanic of Raven Queen, Herself. (Tess Cooper, Neutral Good, Death Domain Cleric)

I have a headcanon where one of Pike and Scanlan's kids gets bullied for insisting their uncle is over 8 feet tall, then Grog walks up, casting a very long shadows and says, "Hi", and the gnome kid yells, "Uncle Grog!" and climbs up to Grog's shoulders while the bully pees themselves.

If there was ever a better example of CR being inaccurate, it would be Scanlan Shorthalt. If people didn’t know who Scanlan was (and how could they NOT) then they would soon realize that he is extremely powerful. So powerful, that if he didn’t lose the ability to cast Wish, he’d be even more terrifying (though, honestly, how Scanlan lost Wish was probably the best reason any Spellcaster could ever ask for)

I would love to see Critical Role do a short EXU campaign where Keylith is the last member left and alongside the current Champion of Ravens the cast plays a character who's ancestry can lead back to Vox Machina and they must work to fix their own Calamity level event. Bringing the world of Taldore as we know to an end

Gnomes have such a long life, I think they might see marriage for life as a human folly. They marry, raise kids, then move on without rankor. Scanlan after all wanted pike as a wife and mother of his children, but we dont know the stigma (if any) to divorce in Exandria.

Feels right to me. They have the chemistry and the build up attraction due to their adventuring experience to stay together long enough to marry and produce kids, but not enough to keep it going. That's how it struck to me, given how Scanlan more liked the idea of Pike. But yeah, it is annoying when something builds up and endgame ship and then says they split after the series ended. Realistic? Yeah. But what was the point of all that if you're just gonna say they didn't work out?

I'm actually surprised that only one of Percy's children was a Tiefling. Deals with devils/demons end up with all offspring being Tieflings as a result. Given how the tradition of Tieflings usually goes, I would have expected all of them to be Tieflings honestly. For their unique canon ending Matt was nice and only made one of them a Tiefling I guess. 🤷

The Tal'Dorei Reborn book says Tieflings pop up in lineage unpredictably, so it's not a pervasive "gene" in every child.

I'm even more hyped for Orym's potential conflict of loyalities here when he finds out, especially if his leader Keyleth gets involved. Even without knowing that Delilah was Laudna's warlock patron, he already was pondering whether he has to inform Vox Machina that the girl who was hung as a double for Vex by the Briarwoods is walking around as a sentient undead, but having Delilah as her patron would make her a major threat. Orym by now considers Laudna a friend and would certainly prefer to find a way to free her from Delilah's influence without harming her, but would Vox Machina listen to his judgement, given that he is only a subordinate member of Keyleth's guard? Keyleth might straight up order him to kill Laudna.

@@chrisrudolf9839 Yeah a lot of campign 1 members would be gunning for her if they found out Delilah was somehow still around and powerful enough to give someone magic. Vex and Percy are the ones I would bet on though I could see Keyleth or even The Champion of Ravens stepping in, espicaly if this turns into a Oban Yasha situation where Delilah takes full control of her.

Thank GOD, I cant get my hands on an affordably priced Taldori guide. I’ve been hoping for something like this!

Honestly, I still haven't finished the campaign myself. But I love knowing this kind of thing. I had really hoped that Whisper would have been passed down to Kynan. I think it would have been a amazing end to both arcs. Vax was the one that had first sent away Kynan, then brought him back, giving him the daggers he had originally planned to before he ran away, and then at the end he would have been given Whisper by Vax. The weapon they had gotten when they had given Kynan what he had orginally wanted. It would have been such a beautiful moment for Vax to give him the dagger with just the simple request, "I'm trusting you to protect them now."

@@FlutesLoot I'd say so. It really does show that there are really serious consequences to what Percy did that don't just get magicked away because he's a good guy now and learned his lesson. Shows that despite some of their creative choices that I don't super agree with or enjoy, they do stick with permanent character consequences.

The fact that Taryon Darrington is not included with his own epilogue is a crime.

The way I took it when I read that part in the book is there was a living being known as Vax and that being died. Then there is a second being who is The Champion of Ravens. So when Vax died his soul became part of The Champion of Ravens, which is really just Purvan's soul I guess, unless there are other champions I don't remember right now but I don’t think so, so their souls sort of combined together into the one collective Celestial being and if there were other mortal champions of The Raven Queen in the future when they eventually permanently died their souls would also join this collective being. It was really the only way I could justify to myself the whole, Vax was Vax but he's not anymore, he is The Champion of Ravens; who is a Celestial but, The Champion isn't wholly Vax he is only a part of this Celestial; but, when Scanlan wished at the wedding for Vax to appear this being recognized enough of itself in that name that it showed up and, mostly, acted like Vax despite Vax only making up a part of its whole and it having the capacity to explain all of that to these people if it wanted to, even if it was just some stupid 'Vax is gone only Champion of Ravens left leave me alone' *instantly feathers*, which it apparently didn’t for some reason that is unknown to us. Meaning that Vax might actually have some type of control or influence within this being for it to both mostly act like him and not immediately write off his family. I have so many questions about this specifically. Is it the champions of all the gods this happens to? Are there multiple '*insert god's name here* Celestial Champion' collectives? Just the Raven Queen's champions? Just Vax cause of the deals he made with her? Therefore the being isn't even Champion + Purvan + Vax + others I might have forgotten or will eventually join; its just Champion + Vax and it always will be? If all these Celestial Champions are "real" and work in the way that each part of the collective has some control, are they fighting all the time? Is it a form of Celectial, fantasy DID and at the wedding Vax was basically just the alter that was fronting and 'Champion of Ravens' is like the system name? Am I horribly butchering my understanding of DID even in a fantasy setting? Just so many questions about the gods and cosmology of Exandria. This became a rant about so much more then you asked about so I sorry about that but it got me thinking and I couldn't stop.

Not likely. Vox Machina takes place in 810-812 PD. Mighty Nein takes place in 835.

A lvl 20 archdruid that can infinitely gain an extra ~126hp as a bonus action is the same CR as a lvl 20 Cleric who can call up her god to literally f*st you is the same CR as a big boi with an axe. Man....CR is wild 😂

CR in general is kinda vague tbh Things can have the same CR but one be very easy for your party to overcome and the other TPK you since party composition etc. isn’t really taken into account And then Applying it to player characters makes it even harder to gauge

Yeah, CR and PC levels don't go well together. If you end up using the CR calculator on DM's guide, you end up with situation wehre level 8 fighter is CR 5 but barbarian of same level can go be CR 8 or highter XD and the less we speak about spellcasters the better.

Probably never, as Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount was released officially already. CR seems to want to make Vox Machina their “main” focus as a company, with the TV show & eventual video game. Which kind of bugs me, because I loved the chaos crew & found them to be more compelling characters than VM, but…

@@FlutesLoot yeah I hated the split, it really undercuts their relationship in retrospect. I guess character growth doesn't mean marriage stability but I don't know, them giving us no reason for the divorce is a little lazy since that's a big bombshell out of nowhere that hit two lovely people.

I doubt these challenge ratings are very accurate considering most of them were around lvl 18 when the campaign ended. Keyleth could be higher but most of them should probably be like 13/14

....honestly cr18 (15 for scanlan) for most is undershooting all of them, most are lvl 20 characters and are Kitted out to the nines

I clearly was in error omitting Taryon! I've received a few comments about Taryon. While I can't update the video at this point, I did spend time this morning adding a section for Taryon in my accompanying article that I link in the description.

what the fuck? SCANLAN has the lowest CR? The MVP? The objectively most powerful player character? Holy fuck thats cap.

It might be due to the fact that Scanlan, despite being amazing at supporting his party, isn’t really able to match the rest in terms of damage output, so when he is alone he can do a ton to disrupt and annoy a group attacking him, but would probably have the hardest time killing any of them (this is also likely why Pike has a lower CR than some of the others as well)

Men I can't wait to see what the mighty Nein are doing.

I hope we get a Wildemount "Reborn" book like we did with Tal'Dorei and we get epilogues for the MN. It might be a different situation due to the WotC involvement with that book, though.

@@FlutesLoot he is a bard, a lot of Scanlan's magic is enchantment, support, control, he can do damage but not on the same level as the others, not to say he is weak or useless (quite the opposite) but his skill set doesn't translate well into a high CR. that said, Challenge Rating is wack, I wouldn't be surprised if Scanlan who has the lowest CR just wrecks a party in 1 round with some ridiculous use of some spell, for instance; Mass Suggestion to make everyone who was trying to kill you get naked and have a dance off, the fight is over in 1 round and Scanlan never broke a sweat.

Scanlan also lost his wish spell canonically. I wonder if that contributes to his downgrading. So while he has a 9th level slot he doesn’t have a 9th level spell.

um.... kylith returned to the air ashari to be their leader, percy maried vex and they ruled whitestone together, vax died, grog went to the tavern, pike went back to the temple and eventually married skanlan. Skanlan later left and went back to markette to become the meat man again. Whats to tell?
