I am in the UK and the Tremeloes with Chesney Hawkes toured the UK last month. They even sang Silence is Golden! The show was in Leeds and there were many bands from the 60s. My friends and I relived our youth and enjoyed every minute of it!

Silence Is Golden was originally recorded by the 4 Seasons. It was the flip side of Rag Doll.

My Mums cousin was Allan Blakley, we had a great family, grew up with the Trems. Silence is Golden is my best hit for them. Miss Allan and now Dave has left us, RIP

@@billhungerford5930 yes he was, I loved going to see him at his house with the family, he was a very genuine guy. I was so upset when he past so young. I played with his 2 daughters we always had a great time.. he’s sadly missed, by a lot of people, sad to see Dave past as well…

Dreamy Tremeloes. What an era of true musicians with great harmonies. Great Britain gifted the world with this era of so many beautiful songs 💖

The Trems were a good band with strong material, but got kinda left behind by changing musical styles, and their younger fans went on to follow more progressive bands in the early 70's.

Silence is golden was a better song. The harmony in the vocals is really good.

Regarding The Beatles' Decca audition. I recently published a book on The Tremeloes ('The Tremeloes: Even The Bad Times Are Good!'), and I've interviewed surviving members extensively. Contrary to them only being signed because they lived close to London, there were very likely other factors too: (a) "The Tremilos", as they were simply called prior to being signed, were already recording for Decca in 1961 - at least as a vocal trio consisting of Brian Poole, Alan Blakley and Dave Munden, who sung on many sessions for others. (b) Another reason they were probably signed is because they were regularly appearing on the nationwide-broadcast BBC 'Saturday Club' throughout 1961, despite not being signed to a label. This was before The Beatles had even appeared on a local radio show of course. (c) Additionnally, Brian Poole swears today that their audition was sometime in late 1961, and definitely NOT on New Year's Day 1962. Here's what he told me recently: “This was sometime in 1961, not, as it says in lots of books, New Year’s Day, when The Beatles did their audition for Decca. I think we had been in Decca before, so this doesn’t stick in my memory much. We played all our Rock and Roll songs plus some vocal harmony songs, don’t know which ones, but mostly loud and fast. Lots of bands came to these auditions, and we and The Beatles were only two of them, but it essentially came down to us or them.”

Hey Peter, Just wanted to say that I've been dipping in and out of your book and it's fantastic! I'm married to Rick's granddaughter, and I hear a lot of stories from his time in the band as well as stories from my in laws and wife. But from reading your book there's a lot of detail and projects they had that my wife didn't know about! Anyway, I hope to finish the book soon but just wanted to say that it's been a great read so far and I'd love to pick your brain a bit more!

I worked at a Daimler/Jaguar agents in Egham in the 60s/70s, Chip Hawkes purchased vehicle from the company(as did Tom Jones & Engelbart Humperdinck) & I remember him bringing Chesney along with him, as a baby!

"Silence is Golden" was the first of the Tremeloes songs I heard and really liked in 1964? I think was the year. I was 10 years old. And the only other of the Tremeloes songs I was aware of and really liked was "Here Comes My Baby." I'm from the USA so we here in the USA might not have heard a lot of the Tremeloes songs on top 40 AM radio.

It wasn't uncommon for groups big in Britain to have only a couple hist in the U.S. "Here Comes My Baby" (April '67) and "Silence Is Golden" (Summer '67) were their only top 20's in America.

Excellent history of a band from my youth. Would have been even better if segments of tracks could have been played as part of this but presumably copyright issues may have caused problems.

Here comes my baby was their best tune in my opinion.

Hey they were very well liked during the 60's and AM radio top40 they seemed to have songs pretty regular..harmony and more "pop-ish" than older listener's maybe was turning toward a new wave of different style's and new bands hitting the air waves but I liked their stuff and still do..Im that old...it was groovy

... silence is golden is my favorite but the bass line in there goes my baby is a classic bass of sixties music 🎵

When they were a thing in the sixties, they had a lot of transistor radio airplay. I was still in elementary school then and always thought they were a California band. They sure sounded like one. Their biggest goof up was not recording Yellow River as their own. Instead they tried the psychedelic avenue that didn't pan out.

They were the first to record Yellow River but didn't release it as a single, Christie used their backing track which went to number one the Trems missed out on that one!

Indeed a big goof. Christie's number one was the Tremeloes.. only with a lead vocal by Jeff Christie, but his later put together band were named on it. So due to the Tremeloes initial "we are now serious rockers" pride, they lost the credit on a number one mega hit, after wanting to dissociate themselves with the poppy song. They did reclaim the song, but it was too late - as their name never went on the label of Christie's version. Yet, they later recorded songs that were more inane and poppy than 'yellow river'. A bad call!

Never heard of them (back then) and I followed rock music from 1963 until 1992. I do remember Silence is Golden and There Goes My Baby.

That’s an interesting one. Yellow River was written by Jeff Christie who gave it to the Tremeloes. They recorded it, but weren’t happy with it and they never released it. Christie’s producer took the vocals off the Tremeloes recording and replaced them with Jeff Christie’s and Christie had a huge hit with it.

7:55 Mick Avery was the Kinks’ drummer. He was never in the Hollies. Bobby Elliot was the Hollies’ drummer.

@@normanpearson8753 around 1963 he did 2 rehearsals with a group of musicians who became the stones tho mick jagger doesn’t remember him, maybe MJ wasn’t a member of that group then….I’ve read Keith Richards autobiography and he makes no mention of MA either

I'm surprised you didn't mentioned the fact that in 1970(?) they decided they wanted to become heavier and rather than try to bring their old fans with them, they decided the best strategy was to publicly describe their existing fans as "morons". That didn't do them any favours and their fall from popularity in the UK largely coincided with this misstep..

@@melbjohn That's true. I have the full article, from 'Melody Maker', 3rd October 1970 (and the letters page two weeks later was very lively!). Incidentally, I recently published a book on the band ('The Tremeloes: Even The Bad Times Are Good!'), interviewing most surviving members. As well as many other things, it throws more light on probably why they got signed to Decca instead of The Beatles.

Just Watched this short Documentary, It was Brian Pool & the Tremolows as i remember them by, Did they ever have a No1.? , Just been playing "Call me No 1" I'd forgotten about that single I still have it amongst other's from those Times, & Good Times aswell, Sad to hear a Couple of members have past away, They were a good band in there Times. God Bless Them all ,

One of these guys went back to work for his family's Estate & Letting Agency in north London and I lived in one of the houses they managed in 1979-81. Nobody wrote the music or lyrics so they were destined to fail.

Passing up the Beatles for these guys? Yeah that has to be one of the greatest F ups of all time.

I sat next the Tremeloes in June 1967 at a concert in London's Saville Theatre. Headlining were Cream and the Jeff Beck Group with its new singer Rod Stewart. The Trems arrived late and sat in the aisle next to our seats in the balcony. The London scene was like that then: groups coming to see other groups.

There last chart entry in the UK was words reaching number 91 ion 16-04-83.

Did they ever tour in the US? The only songs I recall were Here comes my baby & Silence is Golden and charted in the US.

Call me number one is the one I liked the most .Such a great late-sixties vibe .

They should have released their version of Yellow River. Would have given them a chart hit in 1970 which could have catapulted them into the 70's.

@@normanpearson8753 On further research I found out they done a few shows at some Butlin's around the country.. they even performed at the London Palladium once! But from late 1963 onwards information is hard to find..

Actually , I'm old enough to remember the '63 Palladium gig , Lennon saying the ," If you're rich , don't clap , rattle your jewellery" gag .They were so..huge .. it's impossible to convey to the young how brilliant they were .Streets ahead of other bands , who were fantastic . I didn't know that,the song Silence is Golden,was first played by the 4seasons.

They were local to the East End and played venues there as early as 1960. West lived close by, but the original lead guitarist was someone else, Rick Scott, I believe. An excellent band.

A really good band

Actually tye Tremeloes make pretty good, fun and holsom music. I aoso love their song Hello Workd.

Words was a great cover. THEN SHE KISSED ME was a great cover also.

I saw these guys play in a hall above Burton's tailors shop in Uxbridge, Middlesex before they were famous.

Mick Avory was never a member of the Hollies.

They were part of a special time in British pop rock band music. Nothing they did really stood out as being particularly distinctive, but it was pleasant listening. Freddie and the Dreamers some Hermant Hermits, that's about the level I'd put them at. But they made a living at it and good luck to them for that

What happened to them? The Beatles proved who Dick Rowe should have signed to Decca.

Played my High School /secondary school dance [ Robert Clack Tech -Dagenham ] once 1960 or 61 if that makes sense , certainly a straight forward sound probably too many covers not enough original work .

I play myself in a 60s band and knew some of the tremeloes, there's quite a lot of wrong information there.

One of my favourite songs of all time is the B side of Even The Bad Times Are Good , Jenny’s Alright. So sad.

These guys had some good hits. Rock Hall of Fame, maybe?

Not completely true.. rick westwood still performs with tremeloes, chip no longer performs at present. The Trems continue to tour the UK and Germany even in 2023.

Rick Westwood did his last show with the band in 2019, and is now retired.

No they didn't begin as Brian Poole and the Tremeloes!! Brian Poole only did a couple of songs with them. The overwhelming bulk of their work owes itself to Chip Hawkes (father of Chesney) as lead singer.

a few factual errors.... i produced sky star search when chesney hawkes won.....

read once that the late Roy O loved Brians voice also the lead singer for the Walker Brothers

The Trems were actually the tremeloes for a number of years were they not? they split into two seperate bands when Chip and RIck rejoined

Mick Avory had been in the Kinks not the Hollies

If you see Buddy on television, they're actually on The Arthur Murray Show. He was never on Bandstand. Arthur Murray taught ballroom dancing and music; but they would show Baby Boomers artists.

Sorry, but as a musician and singer for 60 years they rate a score below 5 to the Beatles 10. Chart success speaks for itself. I think Brian Poole ended up working in a butcher shop.

Mick Avery was the drummer with the kinks ,not the Hollies as you said.

One thing that happened was that all four of them ‘enjoyed’ a particular young lady. I know that because her brother told me, and she confirmed it. Of course they weren’t the only band to indulge in such things. But still…

Another group I’m not familiar with. Need to check them out.

Check out their 1970 album "Master" . It's an excellent but underappreciated LP. The band wrote all the material which is different from their 60's singles output. It's a diverse collection which I would highly recommend to anyone for a listen. I've been a fan since I was a young boy in 1963. I was fortunate enough to meet Alan & Dave before they passed away, and Len & Joe too. Other tracks to listen too are "Hello Buddy", "My Friend Delaney", "Trifle Tower" , "Happy Song", "Right Wheel Left Hammer Sham", & "My Woman". Enjoy!! 🎶👍👦👍🎶

Didn't know that! Where? I disticntly remember them on Top of Th Pops :😊 SomeoneSomeone - were great. But I heard later that S i G was 'Crewe -Gaudio' composition 4 Th 4 Seasons is th flip side of Rag Doll.

One of the only groups that could perform totally stoned and not screw up their presentation. 🥺

Brian Poole and the Tremeloes--Peanuts

1968, I'm on a one year program in Israel. We lived for the radio, especially the Top 10 of the week on the station Waves of Tzahal, the army radio station. This incredibly catchy tune, "Here Comes My Baby" was so- WOW! Israel was then barely hanging on, with oppressors threatening another genocide on every side, we looked for respite wherever we could.

The Beatles changed music forever, the Tremeloes copied them and did mostly covers. I bet the Decca exec's were kicking themselves.

I do wish people who make these documentarys, check things so far I'm into 4 mins of this. And some of the photos used are definitely NOT THE BAND. There was one of 5 over weight people. This is an insult to the band. Please use people that know their subject

In the UK they are kown as THe Trems with none of the originals/ I saw them they were good but not like the Originals!!

I hated Someone someone, but played the b side until I wore it out.

Thing I loved about "Brian Poole and the Tremeloes" was they pissed off Dave Clark back when they both released "Do you Love Me' with Tremeloes beating them up the charts causing Dave Clark and Mike Smith to work on the finding a better song "Glad all Over" for the start of a real good run. Tremeloes were good but The Dave Clark Five (with Mike Smith) were great.

Yes ! It was Autumn 1963 . Th Contours 'solid' original 'Do u love Me' didn't get much airplay here in UK but Decca quickly got Br Poole & th Tremeloes to record a cover. About th same time EMI ? took on new London grp Th D Clark 5 to do a slower but 'heavyer' version which, in my opinion sounded better, but was beaten into UK charts by B Poole + Trem s. I prefer Th Contours!
