What Happened to the Old Hungarian Flag?
The Hungarian flag is a red-white-green tricolour, although a variant with the Hungarian coat of arms also exacts. What's the origin of this flag and crest and how has the flag of Hungary changed over time?

Nope, it is Imre I.'s coat of arm, and moat probably it is following an Iberian pattern, basicly Imre made a nice alteration of his wife's (Constance of Aragon) coat of arm. He turned the stripes horizontal and changed the gold stripes to silve (white). Basicly theses tripes have more to do with Catalonia's flag then with our rivers :DD

Helo! This is the first video I’ve ever seen from you, and you did a really good job. However as a Hungarian historian, I noticed some minor mistakes which are need to be corrected in my opinion. In 1849, the Hungarian Diet dethroned the Habsburg dynasty and the coat of arms changed as well with it. They used the so called “Kossuth címer” (Kossuth coat of arms) which is basically the Hungarian coat of arms but without the crown and the shape of the crest is slightly different as well. However, oficially the Government form was still Monarchy. In 1945-46 the second Hungarian Republic was proclaimed (communists were in minority in the government during that period). The Hungarians were sick of Monarchy as well (even though, between 1920-1944, Hungary was a Monarchy without a monarch) and the people gladly removed the crown from the crest without Soviet pressure. Communists came to power in 1947 after a controversial election. After the revolution of 1956, there was a coat of arms in the officially used flag - as far as I can remember- called the “Kádár címer” (Kádár coat of arms, named after the leader of Hungary between 1956-1989). If you need sources, feel free to contact me. But as I mentioned, you did an absolutely fine job!
@humorpalanta

The "Kádár címer" was an "internal" flag as it was used mostly within the country. Officially the flag was the red-white-green flag. It is very similar to the situation regarding the Hungariyan Constitution. Even though the constitution was a sort of copy of the russian one it actually never stated the state to be a dictatorship. (I know it is complicated but very interesting!) So basically the state was "in constitution" a democracy with a democratic constitution and the socialist government was basically above the law and used decrees/statutes to form "law" and rule the country. This is one of the reasons why we did not have to accept a new constitution after the regime change and we did not have to change the flag. Because according to law they were democratic. Personally as a political scientist I find it both amazing and hilariously funny. Also I would prefer the "Kossuth címer" as an official coat of arms and the slim flag without any addition. Also the name Republic of Hungary.
@csoki1998

There was a referendum planned around 1990 about what kind of coat of arms people want, the traditional one, or the stripped Kossuth kind (was supported by post communists and the infamous, ~foreign supported "Free Democrats", who later fallen out from the parliament, who always hated the traditions, called them nationalism, and always wanted to erase the past). People in huge majority supported the traditional one, and there was no question what will be voted, so the parliament finally decided to use the traditional one, and the referendum was cancelled.

Both variants are equally used both by the government, government agencies, local governments and civilians. I've never noticed any pattern or system behind it. It's completely random like whichever version they manage to get their hands on when they need a new flag. I saw a chess tournament not long ago and at these tournaments they place mini flags next to the players and even at the same chess tournament there was no consistency. :D Again, whatever they can find as long as it's a legal variant. There's also a third variant where the coat of arms is smaller and only appears on the white stripe. I think this one is only used by civilians.

That's the only "practical" reason I could think about. Hungarians are very proud of their past, so the one with the coat of arms is totally OK too.
Quick note: I say that after the Hungarian Communists were defeated a republican government took over, technically it was a regent acting on behalf of a monarch so a little more complicated than I made out.

Hi, Hungaria (from Slovakia) here. First of all, pretty good summary Hilbert, not many foreign historians research Hungarian history well enough to get the details right. To be honest the use of the Hungarian flag is a bit of a mess. First of all, Hungary uses 23 historical flags on important national events. (Link: hu.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magyar_t%C3%B6rt%C3%A9nelmi_z%C3%A1szl%C3%B3sor) Funny thing is, none of the current 2, the red white and green or the red white and green with the coat of arms is part of the 23 mentioned above. Now it gets complicated: it is true that during the 'rendszerváltás' (literally means 'regime change' but it only refers to the 1989 regime change... Hungary had MANY regime changes in it's 1100 year long history) there was no new law regarding the flag. What did eventually change is the coat of arms ('címer' in Hungarian). So the coat of arms you show in the thumbnail and in the video is the current/valid coat of arms of Hungary. Now here is the part where it gets really complicated/ interesting! The OFFICIAL flag of Hungary is WITHOUT the coat of arms, meaning it's just red white and green... HOWEVER the flag with the coat of arms could be used by individuals and even by state offices and local authorities WITHOUT ANY LEGAL PENALTY. So to sum it all up: red white and green is the official flag, the one with the coat of arms is semi-official. P.s.: Hilbert, a good advice, please don't use the phrase 'rebellion' when talking about the 1848/49 Hungarian revolution especially if Hungarians are around. P.p.s.: Now there are actually banned flags/symbols in Hungary. Hungary is unique in this aspect because it banned both far- right and far- left symbolism. Meaning the communist flag (1948-56) and any related symbolism as well as the arrow- cross (Hungarian nazi) flag and the swastika (German nazi) flag is banned. That's the reason why there's no real Antifa presence (unlike the US or Germany) nor is there a communist party in Hungary. On the other hand the far- right found a loophole in this law, they started to use the Árpád flag (red and white) for some weird reason which is part of the 23 historical flags to avoid being arrested or fined. Fortunately the far-right activity has been on the decline since the 2006 riots which was the peak year of neo- nazi movements.

However depiction from middle of 1800s show it not crooked, whilst depictions from late 1700s show it crooked. @@therealignotus7549 It is indeed the "canon" that the crown was made out of two pieces, but one of the goldsmiths who had the opportunity to take a close look at it claimed that the parts doesn't make sense separately. I believe him more than the currently accepted theory, because that one is dumb. Anyway, the box which was housing the crown and the rest of the crown jewels is on display and it's just a reinforced box with no inserts or anything. That's why there is no guy who closed it too fast, the crown was probably damaged and repaired multiple times during the last at least 1000 years. There are multiple depictions, but especially after the Habsburgs took over, virtually nobody saw the crown irl. It was only worn on coronation ceremonies and they were rare. So for one to depict it correctly had to have: - Art talent - Access to the crown for a sufficient amount of time - The urge and permission or commission to depict it Which was very rare and even rarely survived history. Most of what survives today are copies of earlier drawings and texts. Also some of the drawings were created from text and the artist never saw the crown. Yes, the crown had some changes, earlier texts claim the picture on the back was Virgin Mary and not Michael VII Doukas. Also it had 5 pendants originally, now it has 7. Yes, it needs to be researched more and also we need to pay attention more to those who know a thing or two about goldsmithing, because historians were clearly failed us multiple times.
Dude, this is the most energetic I've heard you sound period! Good to know you're in good health!
The Hungarian crown that included in the coat of arms actually has a hungarian king ruled after Stephen and byzantine emperor (also ruled after Stephen) on it. In Hungary one of the current version of the crown origin story states it is 2 crowns merged together one is that contains the images I mentioned above (greek crown) and one with unknown origin (latin crown). Also the cross on top is a later addition and was originally straight.

1:29 red, white, green. The video is great! Some comment on the end of the video: The current hungarian constitution says, that the coat of arms and the flag without the coat of arms is the official symbols of Hungary, but it says too, that the coat of arms and the flag can be used as other historical versions were used too. This usage is regulated by a special law.
First of all, thx for the video :) The Árpád dynasty didn't just lose power, the main branch died out. Their symbol stayed on the coat of arms of kings after them, because they were all related. In fact, even the Royal Family of the UK is related to them as well. The rebellion wasn't lasted a year. It was recognized at first, then the king vas deposed and Franz Joseph walked back on the recognition. After that, it was an independence war and not a rebellion really. But that last one is nitpicking :) Also while I nitpick, the whole thing was about 1,5 year not one :D :P 1919 - No, the communists weren't crushed by foreign powers. The commies looted everything that wasn't nailed down, murdered and then simply fled. Also, the people rebelled against them. It did happen at the same time when the Romanian army pushed through, but that's a coincidence. Also-also, there is a major part missing: There were a hippie revolution of sorts in 1918, they even removed the crown from the flag, which was pretty similar to the '47 flag, but the shield shape was different. They are also the ones who should be blaimed for the previously mentioned defeat, because they started to demlilitarize the country and let the neighboring countries take territories with ethnic Hungarians lived at the time. '57 - No, it was in '56, less than two weeks after the rebellion started Current use: Both versions official, but the flag with the crest is special, it can only be used (without permission) basically by the government and its extensions. So, the Parliament, the Judical branch, the head of state, the army, etc. The rest of us can use the plain flag.

As a Hungarian i have to mention that the double cross is the apostolic double cross, as the Hungarian kings were given the apostolic title by the Pope. Thats the official story. Thus starting from Stephen I every king was the Apostolic King of the Kingdom of Hungary.
@jmeneshaton
Жыл бұрын
Sorry but not the Pope gave us, as the Hungarian kings , just as Stephen I. also established all the churches in the Hungarian Kingdom. just as the Pope had not send the Holy Crown to the king. If the Pope sent any crown it was not the coronation crown. The Apostolic title goes to the kingdom, the Hungarian king is an Apostol - this came from this and earlier acts happened by leaders in Pannonia. The referred this last one by Stephen generally as the scythian king or Hungarian king in person of Stephen I selected and voted to Rome leading christian churches Against byzantine version - established such churches in the Kingdom and established closer connections to Rome. He made it to so called catholic - that means universal - at least that was the intent , as it that time the christian church was parted to Rome led smaller and Constantine established official romanian where the main priest were always the Byzantine emperor only later the patriarch. And also some independent smaller churches were as well. Think about it : in the time of Atilla there were no Pope - that main priest was just bishop of Rome. So as the most strong kingdom and power in Europe he could established or tried to establish a unified christian churches. This gave the veto rights to them at the election of Pope, only the Hungarian king has that right. Franz Joseph was the last king who could use it to block a Pope to be selected for election. Some years later there was get off by a sinodus or conference -- those who had not right to take away that right. as it was not given by a Pope as the later Popes were not Apostle just as the Hungarian kings were.

Great video. Little bit of Missed opportunity to mention why the cross at the top of the crown is bent.
During the regime change (1989) there was a debate that the coat of arms should keep the crown on the top or should it be removed. The did not remove it at the end because they said that with the crown on top it represents the continuity of the hungarian state, and symbolises that this is the same state that was founded by Saint Stephen I.
Theoretically, the colours of the Árpád dynasty weren't white and red, but silver and red. I don't know exactly why but somewhere it became white. But originally it was silver.

The one without the coat of arms is used most often. Usually when government agencies or local governments have to use it they will go with the official one and many people also use the official flag, but also a lot of people prefer the one with the coat of arms. So altogether the offical flag is used most often.

A very tiny error: 4:15 is a picture of a Serbian Tzar Dušan. At that time, Serbia was independent form Byzantine for some 100+ years. Tzardom of Serbia is basically the continuation of the Byzantine tradition and art, so this portrait is painted in the same fashion as Byzantine ones and has all those Orthodox motifs and items, so we can consider it the same. But since I felt a little bit of national pride when I saw the picture, just wanted to point this fact out :)

The Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Church in Toronto Canada uses the Hungarian flag with the coat of arms.
The colours have meaning where the red means power, the white is for loyalty and green represents hope. Also on the coat of arms the 4 white (originally silver) lines stand for the 4 main rivers of the Hungarian kingdom, the Danube (Dúna), Tisza, Drava and Sava The double cross actually has a religious meaning of Egypt being united in 1800 BC, and on the coat of arms we're told here that it represented Hungary being a Christian Kingdom.
It's nearly the same with Austria we also use the coat of arms in our flag but have the one without presentated
Hey, the video was great but there were some mistakes, The Árpád-dynasty's "male line" died out and there was no heir for the throne! So it didn't lost power. The Patriarchal Cross was used by the most Orthodox Nations in Eastern Europe, for example Serbian's had it with White cross on Golden flag or Red cross on White flag! And the Hungarian Rebellion in 1848-49 wasn't destroyed by the Austrian's, the Austrian army was pretty weakened and the war was turning after Hungarian campaign's in Spring of 1849 called "Spring Campaign" but after the Austrians left the Country in the Summer of 1849, because of great losses and bad cohesion! And when they once more entered Hungary to destroy the Hungarian Rebellion they made an Alliance with the Russian Empire! And the Hungarian Army wasnt able to fight against 2 major empire's!
On an admittedly pedantic note, when talking about a coat of arms, your left is actually right (or dexter), and vice versa.
Hiii!! So in hungary we use both flags (both the simple tricolor and the one with the coat of arms). But there are flags that you didn't talked about. For an example with Szent István (Stephan l) our flag was full red and had a zigzag-is shape, like Nepal, then we had flags with just crosses on and with also an interesting shape, on those flags we mostly used different symbols from the coat of arms, then we had the Anjou flag after the Árpáds died out, then one from Luxemburgi Zsigmond and (big time jump) one from 1918 when there where no crown on the coat of arms Also there are some minor mistakes with the spelling like Béla isn't spelled with an 'i', 'é' is like uh.. Like in w *a* y or when you spelled 'magyar' it sounded like 'Madzsar' which is kindau nderstandable beacuse 'gy' and 'dzs' are similar, but 'dzs' is like *gy* m or *je* welry and 'gy' well.. There aren't much words pronounced with a 'gy'. Ofc the hungarian language is pretty hard so I don't blame you, sometimes even we, Hungarians misspell it lol Good video tho, keep up the good work!! Sok szeretet Magyarországról!!💓💖
One thing you forgot to mention is that the First Hungarian Republic would actually adopt a new coat of arms from 1918 to 1919 which did not have the crown at all but it had the simple shape of the current coat of arms.
Please do a video about the history of the flag of Myanmar. It’s very interesting.
Great video! The president of the republic is also entitled to use the coat of arms with two angels as shield holders, and the prime minister is also entitled to use the coat of arms surrounded by oak branches and olive branches.
heyyyy hungarian here, you left out quite a few details my dude but i really appreciate the tryings to pronounce the genuinely quite difficult words
Change is constant and keeps things fresh.
A of the law in power, since the year 2011, no coat of arms is included in the official flag, and only selected governmental bodies (explicitly listed in the text) are allowed to use the second version, which includes the coat of arms in formal circumstances. However, non-official use of it is widespread and generally accepted.

Happy New Year!
Hello. The video was very well done. I would like to say the following things as positive criticism, I don't want to offend you. 1., At 1.31 you said that . "Red, yellow and green." In reality, it is not yellow, but white. What you say in 7.19 is white instead of yellow. (Why am I dating this little mistake? 🤷♂️) 2., At the Árpád strip, the white stripes indicate/indicated the four big rivers found in the "great" Hungarian nation: Danube, Tisza, Ráva and Száva. I think the video was very well done, I hope that you will make the flags of other nations with such precision and dedication.
Hello! I'm Hungarian and this is the first video I see abot an English guy making a video about the Hungarian flag! Btw most commonly we use the flag without the coat of arms
i am from Hungary, and you forgot the trianon and versay agrument. this is 2 important thing with out that no one can understand fully the Hungarian people :)
nice to see some one who can say hungarian words almost prfectly (i have seen so much english youtubers who couldnt) oh and hi from hungary :D
11:38 hi i am from hungary. and we use it both but the normal one that just has the red white and green is displayed only!
The one with the coat of arms is much better, it adds more personality to the whole flag, and the historical aspect is very cool
I'm from Hungary. That was amazing! Thank you!
2 points I want to make. The modern flag has different dimensions fron the royal flag. It's 2:3, compared to the 1:2. Second, I'm a littlw disappointed you didn't talk more about the Austria-era Great Hungary crest, which I think is the most interesting. Flanked by the 2 angels, you can see the Hungarian crest in the center surrounded by local crests. These include Szeklerland, Slavonia, Croatia, Transylvania, etc.
Hi this is a very very good Hungarian history video!
I'm hungarian, I live in Hungary, and on national holidays there are flags displayed on the street on street lamps and such, and they're almost always the regular tricolor without the coat of arms, and it's quite rare to see the version with the coat of arms, but you can find it in some places! Thanks for the video, learned some new things about my own country!
Nowadays, the pure red-white-green represents present day Hungary, the one with the coat of arms also is in use, representing the unity of all hungarians líving in Carpathian basin and all over the world.
Nice job. I see mostly plain flag. I miss the coat of arm with the crown.
The difference between the two flags: Without coat of arms: Hungarian national flag With coat of arms: state flag (government, president of the republic, constitutional court, parliament, etc.)
hello. I am from Hungary and we usually use the plane red, white and green stripes without the simbol but if you are lucky you can see ane on a goverment building
more tri colour flags should have code of arms, way easier to differentiate them
van ebben az "elemzésben" nagyon sok hiba / tévedés !!!!
Hi! So the thing is the red-white-green means: Red: Power, White: Loyalty, Green: Hope.
Please explaining why the crown on top of the shield has a crooked cross

It was buried and damaged.
There used to be a Hungarian cultural centre near my home. For a while they flew a Hungarian flag with the coat-of-arms center cut out! It looked like when Fearless Fosdick in the comic strip LI'L ABNER would shoot up a place and leave big round bullet holes everywhere...

In that flag thats a symbol of the cutting out of the communist symbols. People ususally do that during the celebration of the 1956 revolution.
I didnt know that "Fun with flags" are really exsists. Thank you great video. I more often see the one with army coat. I was in belief that it is the official. I just see them at official events like the speach of the Ministerpresident. You pronounced perfectly the hungarian words. It is really rare so i had to mentioned :-) Dont mind the critical voices. This is just the know it all hungarian virtue. Ask them about the milestones of the human kind they wont know nothing... Have a nice day. I love history channalls so i subscribed. :-)
Why is the Botswana flag in the background bruh? Btw really nice video.
It is a common misconception that prior to the 1867 compromise it was just Habsburg Empire, that is Austria, and the Hungarian Kingdom did not exist and only in 1867 the Habsburgs acknowledged the separate Hungarian Kingdom. You also said something like that. Well the Hungarian Kingdom existed throughout the Habsburg rule, the Emperor had to be crowned separately with the Hungarian Crown to become the King of Hungary and assume the right to rule Hungary. The Hungarian Kingdom was always a separate entity within the Habsburg Empire and the term Austria never covered Hungary. Without being crowned by the Saint Hungarian Crown he/she had no legitime right to rule Hungary, so anyone could have just ignore his/her decisions. There were attempts to ignore this, like in the case of Joseph II who did not crown himself with the Hungarian Crown, but he therefore had to revoke all of his decisions later on, as he made them illegitim. So the Hungarian Kingdom existed continuously from the year 1000. The only difference was that during the Habsburg rule the Habsburg Kings acknowledged only partial selfgovernence of the Hungarian nation: eg. even if there was a Hungarian Parliament (Diet) in Pozsony (today Bratislava) it had limited relevance and the Austrian secret police kept the developments under control. For instance the representatives of the Hungarian nation should have elected and approve the king and the Habsburgs obviously ignored or rather, they made sure that only loyal Hungarian nobels had a right to vote. All financial decisions were made in Vienna, keeping Hungary relatively undeveloped. Hence Hungarians rebelled against the Habsburg rule and the Compromise in 1867 fixed these acknowledging the separate Hungarian government with complex selfgovernance.
Thenkyou ❤️❤️
I’m Hungarian American and I wish it had the symbol on it, it looks better with it
The flag without the crown is the official state flag flag used by the government and also the official civil flag while the flag without the crown holds a status as an unofficial state flag

I've looked into the legal details if anyone's interested. The original Hungarian coat of arms was - for all intents and purposes - banned between 1950 and 1989 though I don't think there was an actual law stating this but in practice the police would've taken you away for using it. In 1990, after the fall of communism, the coat of arms was restored but not onto the flag as the video also states. That didn't stop people from using it on the flag though. So in 1995, instead of trying to strictly police the usage of the flag, the government decided to make it a valid alternative basically legalising the already existing custom. (1995. LXXXIII.) This allowed double usage was reaffirmed in the 2011. CCII. law which is still in effect today. Having the empty flag as the main one is a legacy of goulash communism but it will probably stay this way as opinions on it are divided. Some say Hungary had the first horizontally red-white-green flag so there's no need for us to differentiate it with the coat of arms. Others say the coat of arms and the flag are two different symbols and should not be mixed. Other people believe that the one with the coat of arms should be the state flag, while the empty one should be the ethnic flag. Also there are people who prefer the empty flag because their political views don't agree with the symbolism of the coat of arms. So this allowed double usage is probably the best solution which will stay and yes, it is random. :D
4:3 Variants was used durring the Kadar and earlier durring the Rakosi period that used their Socialist arms on the 4:3 flag
I remember there was a national vote regarding the flag during the regime change, between the tricolor flag without the coat of arms, with the Kossuth coat of arms, and with the coat of arms with the Royal Crown. The result of the election favored the one with the Royal Crown, so I suppose that is the official national flag, although in reality both that one and the simple tricolor are used.
We dont view the coat of arms as a part of the flag, however it can be placed on the flag. It doesnt change the flag itself though. Official buildings have the flag with the coat of arms because both are individually official symbols of the country. With or without the coat of arms, we dont think the two verssions of the flag is two versions. They are the same flag. The coat of arms is just an extra symbol by itself, it doesnt change the flag per se
Very well made video, it's also historically accurate, but I would also confirm what others said here: the 4 stripes are representing the rivers of the Carpathian Basin and they were actually silver on the original coat of arms. But everything you said was correct. As for today's flag I like both versions, but I can imagine that they will restore the one with the coat of arms as Orbán would pretty much crown himself as king of Hungary if he could :D

In heraldry the color white represents silver (and yellow represents gold), so right you are!
I live in Vojvodina (what used to be a part of Hungary) and since we have a significant number of Hungarians many municipal and provincial administrative buildings are flying both Serbian and Hungarian flag, Hungarian flags are always with the crest. Also, Hungarian is one of the official languages in our province alongside Serbian, Slovakian, Romanian and Ruthenian(Rusyn). I love all of my neighbors ne matter their nationality, although I have to admit I like Hungarians little bit more because my kids are half Hungarian... 😘
well,i'm from Hungary and i like both of the flags, and i just see the one whitout anything in the center of the flag often and abt the change,i don't really think we should,it's perfect for me what kind of flag we have right now
There are more layers with regards to the cross. The cross on the triple hill means Holy Land which is an ancient symbol. Of course it’s widely used by Christianity. Furthermore the symbol itself is a letter (eGY) in the old Hungarian runic alphabet (with the meaning ONE) in latin letter written GY, and in English prononced something like “dj”. EGY-Ház=One-Unity-Holy-Saint. Kings of Hungary has got apostolic title from Rome pope therefore double cross has a second (less sophisticated) meaning as apostolic cross, but nothing to do with Byzantine, since the Apostolic kings had got special power and privilege from the Roman Catholic Church. All in all the cross standing on a triple mount is also a symbol from ancient times. The royal coat of arms is depicted with angels, which is also can be seen on the Hero’s square in Budapest (Archangel Gabriel holds the Hungarian Holy Crown and the apostolic double cross in his hands). So I would choose this nice flag with the 2 angels.
at 1:30 did you say yellow? :D
both are standard and identify us. but of course the coat of arms is an older sign and refers to the kingdom. btw the government widely use it on any official documents as signature/stamp/graphics. it's the default sign of the hungarian state. even in schools there is a plate above the board with a coat of arms in every classrooms. also have to mention that the kossuth (kossuth címer) version is famous too and it's a symbol of the hungarian revolution and the independent republic.
According to modern genetic studies, the Hungarians were always in Europe (i.e they arrived with other humans in the prehistoric ages). Because everybody has 1000+ grandparents and everybody mixed over the centuries, thus Hungarians could also have a genetic impact from outside Europe. Nowadays many Hungarians are making personal genetic tests and the majority of Hungarians have similar results. According to these genetic tests, the Hungarians have a vast amount of shared genomes with local ancient Stone Age and Bronze age samples from the Carpathian Basin which was the western part of the Scythian civilization and where later the Hungarian state was established around 900. Hungarians also have a big Scythian impact on their genetics from the Scythians and from Scythian folks (Sakas, Sarmatians, Huns, Avars, Hungarian tribes of Árpád). And of course, Hungarians have Germanic and Slavic genetic impacts. Hungarian people look similar to their neighbors and Hungarian genetics are similar to their neighbors (Austria, Croatia, Czechia, East Germany, Moldova, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Transylvania, and Ukraine). The genetics of today’s Hungarians match with a vast amount of Stone Age and Bronze Age local Carpathian Basin ancient genetic samples, and the Carpathian Basin locates at the center of Europe. The horses were domesticated in the Eurasian Steppe. This 8000 km long area was the ancient homeland of the horse archer Scythian folks, the Scythian core region locates above the Black Sea in Europe, they were a tribal confederation, and the Proto-Hungarian tribes were among them. The western end of the Eurasian steppe zone is the Carpathian Basin, and the eastern end is the Ordos region, there are very rich Scythian archeological findings in the whole Eurasian Steppe, in the Carpathian Basin (Central Europe), in East China and in Mongolia too. It was a continuous movement of the horse archer Scythian nations between the west and the east in the past. The Carpathian Basin had constantly a base population and according to the latest archaeogenetics results, this base population had a relationship with the returning nations. There were many comebacks from Scythia in many waves such as the Iazyges, the Sarmatians, the Huns, the Avars, the Hungarians. The Scythian-Hungarian affinity was declared in medieval sources. According to modern genetic studies, the Proto-Hungarians admixed with Sarmatians and Huns, and the old Hungarian tribes of Grand Prince Árpád were a less homogeneous group than today's Hungarians in the conquering Hungarian period. The blood oath was a Scythian tradition and many tribes together became a new nation through this custom. The name of the tribal confederation always came from the name of the strongest leading tribe, who was raised on the shield, and who was the elected leader among them. But it was more tribes always in the Carpathian Basin. Hungary was called "Magyar-country" in the Hungarian language because Árpád from the Megyer tribe was raised on the shield, and his tribe, and he was the elected leader.
Hi, Hungarian guy here, the stripes resembles the rivers: Duna, Tisz, Dráva, Száva.
1:30 what where do u see yellow
Fun fact: In the 1956 revolution, Hungary put bowls on the ground to stop the tanks it didn’t but it worked as the Soviets thought they were land mines and dared to not go over them
Well we have the flag with the Code of Arms, but it isn't very common in our area so it's hard to tell
Crazy how they didnt teach any of this in school
The coat of arms was changed when János Kádár took over in 1957
thank you for the video about my homeland. The tricolour version without the coat of arms can be seen on flag days when all the flagpoles fly the national banner. No sign of the coat of arms version officially, it would probably be a great anachronism because we have no king any more so there's no need of the crown in our national symbols. However, we have seen actions in history when wishes and desires override common sense and reason.
My family moved to Canada and America after the collapse of the Soviet Union and its satellites. I fly the austro-hungarian flag but would love to just get a tricolour with the coat of arms by itself to fly as well
